Campgrounds and RV parks near North Philipsburg, PA

Water recreation centers on Black Moshannon Lake, where electric-motor boats, kayaks, and canoes are allowed and a swimming beach is open from mid-May to mid-September. The lake and Black Moshannon Creek are open for fishing, and the park's bog is a designated State Natural Area with carnivorous plants, orchids, and rare northern species. Hiking is the other main draw. The Allegheny Front Trail loops through Moshannon State Forest and connects to several park trailheads, and Black Moshannon has more than 20 miles of trails on its own, plus a short mountain-biking network. Bird watchers use the park's Important Bird Area for spring and fall migration. Families staying at Woodland Campground can pair on-site amenities with day trips to the PA Elk Country Visitor Center, Bilgers Rocks, and Penn State attractions in State College.

Camping season in this part of central Pennsylvania generally runs from mid-April through mid-December at the state parks. Simon B Elliott's campground is open from early May through October, while Black Moshannon operates from the second Friday in April through mid-December after deer season. Private parks such as Woodland Campground, Lauder Family Campground, and Glendale Valley Campground publish their own schedules and often offer longer daily, weekly, and seasonal stays. Spring brings cool nights, wet ground, and rising wildflower and bird activity. Summer is peak season: warm days, humid afternoons, and the busiest weekends at the lake. Nights stay cool because of the roughly 1,900-foot elevation on the plateau, so RVers should pack layers even in July. Fall delivers strong hardwood color through October and lighter crowds. Winter is quiet, but Black Moshannon stays open year-round for day use and is popular for cross-country skiing, while Simon B Elliott serves as a starting point for snowmobiling in the Moshannon State Forest.

Check-in at Pennsylvania state parks is typically in the afternoon and check-out is in the morning; confirm exact times with the specific park. Quiet hours run from 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Firewood cannot be brought in from out of state, so plan to buy locally to protect against spotted lanternfly and emerald ash borer. Cell service is unpredictable across the Moshannon plateau, so downloading park maps and directions before arrival is recommended. Sites at Simon B Elliott are rustic with no electricity or full hookups, though a sanitary dump station is on site. Black bears are present in the region, so food and trash should be secured. Pets are permitted at designated sites and cabins but must be leashed and cleaned up after.
