Port Allegany camping overview
Port Allegany sits in McKean County in north-central Pennsylvania, on the upper Allegheny River near the New York border. The borough is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Pennsylvania Wilds, the Allegheny National Forest, and the surrounding state forests. U.S. Route 6, one of the region's main scenic corridors, runs directly through town.
Campground options within a short drive range from full-hookup private parks to a small state park campground. Allegheny River Campground, on Route 6 west of Port Allegany, offers riverside and pull-through sites. Majestic Kamp and Lost Trails caters to ATV riders on a large private property in the surrounding hills. Sizerville State Park, south near Emporium, provides a smaller public campground with electric sites in a mountainous setting nearly surrounded by Elk State Forest.
Riverhurst Park Campground and Lake Lane Campground sit within an easy drive across the state line near Olean, New York, both usable for RVers using Port Allegany as a hub.
Things to do near Port Allegany
The area is built around outdoor recreation. The upper Allegheny River supports stocked trout fishing, fly fishing, and paddling in the summer months. Historic Route 6 links Port Allegany to Coudersport, Kinzua Bridge State Park, and points farther east across the Pennsylvania Wilds.
Elk viewing is a major draw. The Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette, south of Port Allegany, is the main viewing hub for the largest wild elk herd in the northeastern United States, with peak activity in fall during the rut. Cherry Springs State Park, an internationally recognized dark-sky site, is roughly an hour south.
ATV and dirt-bike riders can access private trails at Majestic Kamp and Lost Trails, and the surrounding state forests offer extensive snowmobile routes in winter. Sizerville State Park adds hiking, a seasonal swimming pool, and access to the Bucktail Path Trail.

The camping season in this part of Pennsylvania is shaped by cold winters and short, mild summers. Most private campgrounds open in April and close in mid to late October. Sizerville State Park's campground follows a longer arc, opening the second Friday in April and closing in mid-December after deer season.
Summer, from late June through August, is peak season. Weekends and holidays around Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day fill quickly, especially at riverside sites, so booking several months out is wise. Fall brings cool nights, strong foliage color across the hardwood forests, and the elk rut, all of which drive a second surge in bookings from late September into mid-October.
Winter shuts down most RV camping. Snow, freezing temperatures, and limited services mean many parks close entirely. A few private operations stay open for snowmobilers, but water service at most sites is shut off.
How to book a campground
Reservation systems vary by property type. Pennsylvania state park campsites, including Sizerville State Park, are booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation system online or by phone at 888-PA-PARKS. Most sites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, with the daily release at noon Eastern time.
Private campgrounds such as Allegheny River Campground, Majestic Kamp and Lost Trails, Riverhurst Park Campground, and Lake Lane Campground handle bookings directly, either through their own websites or by phone. Availability tightens fast for summer weekends and fall foliage dates, so contacting the campground several weeks ahead is the norm.
Allegheny National Forest campgrounds are reserved through Recreation.gov.
What to expect on the ground
This is a rural, heavily forested region. Cell service is unpredictable, and Sizerville State Park in particular has no reliable cell coverage inside the park, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is recommended.
Sites range widely. Private parks along the Allegheny River tend to offer electric hookups and pull-through options suitable for larger rigs. Sizerville State Park has 23 sites, 18 with electric, plus walk-in tent sites, flush toilets, warm showers, and a sanitary dump station. Majestic Kamp and Lost Trails leans toward primitive ATV-oriented camping.
Black bears are present throughout the region, so food should be stored securely. Firewood restrictions apply at many parks to limit pest spread, so buying local wood on site is the safest option.
