Camping near Port Royal, Pennsylvania
Port Royal sits along the Juniata River in Juniata County, in the ridge-and-valley country of south-central Pennsylvania. The town is best known for Port Royal Speedway, and the surrounding countryside is a mix of farmland, wooded ridges, and river access points. For RV travelers, it works as a quiet base within driving distance of Harrisburg, State College, and the wider Susquehanna Valley.
Private campgrounds close to town, including Buttonwood Campground, Paradise Stream Family Campground, and Waterside Campground and RV Park, cater to family RV trips with hookups and river-oriented recreation. The Juniata River itself is a draw for fishing, tubing, and paddling.
For state-park camping, two options bracket the area. Little Buffalo State Park sits in the wooded hills of Perry County, centered on 88-acre Holman Lake, with a modern campground that includes walk-to sites, standard sites, and full-service sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups. Colonel Denning State Park, in north-central Cumberland County, has 273 acres of woodland and a 3.5-acre lake, and serves as a gateway to the roughly 96,000-acre Tuscarora State Forest that surrounds the park.
Things to do around Port Royal
The Juniata River shapes most on-water recreation near town. River-adjacent campgrounds such as Buttonwood Campground and Waterside Campground and RV Park put fishing, kayaking, and tubing within easy reach of a site. Port Royal Speedway draws race fans on summer weekends and remains one of the region's biggest local attractions.
At Little Buffalo State Park, families can combine camping with lake swimming, boating, and fishing on Holman Lake for bass, catfish, and trout. Historic attractions include Shoaff's Mill, a restored grist mill, and a covered bridge, and miles of trails wind through the surrounding forests, suitable for hiking and mountain biking.
Colonel Denning State Park adds trout fishing on Doubling Gap Lake and access to longer hikes, including the Flat Rock climb into Tuscarora State Forest along the Tuscarora Trail.

The camping season in this part of Pennsylvania runs roughly from mid-spring through late fall, with private parks opening earlier and state-park campgrounds following the trout and deer calendars. Spring is cool and often wet, with rivers running high from snowmelt and rain. It is a strong season for trout anglers but a mixed one for tubing.
Summer is the peak. Days are warm and humid, thunderstorms are common in the afternoons, and weekend sites at state parks book far in advance. At Little Buffalo, the swimming pool operates seasonally from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
Fall brings cooler nights, foliage across the ridges, and quieter campgrounds. The Colonel Denning tent and trailer campground opens on the opening day of trout season and closes the day after rifle deer season in December, so late-season RV travelers should confirm availability. Winter camping options are limited, and most private and state campgrounds are closed.

Sandy went above and beyond. Leading up to the rental dates she was in communication, making sure we were on the same page. I opted for delivery rather than pickup, and she made sure the rv was delivered early so we could fully enjoy the rental dates. We had a normal issue w the AC (the unit froze) but she was very communicative and helpful until the problem was solved (she suggested to turn it to fan in case the unit was frozen, and it quickly thawed). Always very sweet and courteous, always responsive. My four year old son loved the trailer, was very upset to understand that we had to give it back 😂. Thanks, Sandy!

How to book a campground near Port Royal
Private campgrounds in the Port Royal area take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Sites along the Juniata River, including Buttonwood Campground, Paradise Stream Family Campground, and Waterside Campground and RV Park, fill quickly on race weekends at Port Royal Speedway and on summer holidays, so book several weeks ahead when possible.
Pennsylvania state park campgrounds use a single reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), and must be booked at least 3 days ahead of arrival. The booking window opens up to 11 months in advance. Little Buffalo State Park's modern campground typically operates from mid-April through late October.
What to expect on the ground
Private RV parks along the Juniata River, such as Buttonwood Campground and Waterside Campground and RV Park, typically offer level sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups, bathhouses, and river access. Expect a family atmosphere in summer and a heavier motorsports crowd on race weekends.
State park campgrounds are more rustic. At Little Buffalo, some sites have electric and water hookups and a few are full-service. All campsites have a picnic table and fire ring, a sanitary dump station is in the campground, and pets are permitted on designated sites.
Colonel Denning offers 49 tent and trailer sites, each with a picnic table and fire ring, plus restrooms with warm showers and a dump station. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania state parks, so download park maps before arrival.

Just use the Delivery filter when searching, or message the host from the listing page to confirm distance and fees. By the time they pull away, your awning is out and the cooler is stocked, so you can simply unwind by the Juniata River.

Spring (April-May) brings 50-70°F days, blooming dogwoods along the Juniata, and quieter campgrounds. Summer (June-August) climbs into the 80s with warm river days perfect for tubing, plus Port Royal Speedway sprint car races on Saturday nights. Fall (September-October) is a showstopper, with foliage exploding across Tuscarora Mountain and the Juniata County Fair landing around Labor Day. Winter dips into the 20s-30s with occasional snow, so look for an RV with heated tanks if you're chasing a quiet off-season escape. Insider tip: visit mid-September for fair week plus peak racing.

The roads around Port Royal are mostly flat, low-traffic Juniata Valley two-lanes, ideal for getting comfortable behind the wheel. You can message your host with questions any time before or during the trip, and RVezy's support team has your back. Pro tip: pick up at the host's location, drive the short distance to River Rock Camping & RV Park, and practice setup somewhere easy.

You're never on your own. You also have a direct line to your host, who knows the rig inside out, plus RVezy's customer support team. Cell coverage is solid in Port Royal and along US-322, though it can get patchy deep in Tuscarora State Forest, so download offline maps before heading in. Most issues get sorted quickly so you can get back to enjoying your trip.

Popular routes include heading north to Penn State and Black Moshannon State Park (about 70 miles), east through Hershey and Lancaster's Amish Country (around 90 miles), south to Gettysburg and the Mason-Dixon line (80 miles), or west to Raystown Lake and Seven Points Campground (about 75 miles). Crossing into Maryland, New York, West Virginia, or Ohio is allowed on most RVezy rentals, just confirm with your host before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsHow much should I budget for fuel on a Port Royal RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable on any RV trip, but Pennsylvania prices in the Juniata Valley tend to track close to the state average. Class B campervans get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8-12 MPG, and Class A diesel pushers land around 7-10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. For a typical 200-mile weekend exploring Port Royal Speedway and a Tuscarora State Forest day trip, budget roughly $60-$120 in fuel. Insider tip: fill up in Mifflintown or along US-322 where stations are larger and pricing is competitive, then top off before heading into the forest where stations get sparse.

dcnr.pa.gov/StateForests/FindAForest/Tuscarora/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat are the driving conditions like around Port Royal?
Driving an RV around Port Royal is refreshingly relaxed compared to bigger Pennsylvania cities. US-322 is the main four-lane corridor connecting Port Royal to Harrisburg and State College, with gentle grades and big shoulders. PA-75 and local roads through the Juniata Valley are scenic two-lanes with some curves around Tuscarora Mountain, manageable in any Class C or travel trailer. Watch for Amish horse-drawn buggies on rural roads, deer at dawn and dusk, and low clearances on some historic covered bridges, so route around them in tall rigs. Pro tip: avoid the steep forest roads in Tuscarora State Forest after heavy rain.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Port Royal?
Local campgrounds near Port Royal punch above their weight on amenities. River Rock Camping & RV Park offers full hookups (electric, water, sewer), a modern bathhouse, Wi-Fi, and direct Juniata River access for kayaks and tubes. Shoop's Country Campground has full hookup sites, clean bathhouses, and a peaceful PA-75 setting. Tuscarora State Forest's roadside sites are primitive (fire ring, picnic table, no hookups), so plan for self-contained camping there. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Mifflintown before heading deep into Tuscarora State Forest, where water access is limited.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LittleBuffaloStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhat's included inside a typical Port Royal RV rental?
Modern RVs on RVezy come fully equipped for a comfortable Juniata Valley getaway. Expect a real bed (queen or king in most Class C and Class A units), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with air conditioning and propane furnace, and dining/lounge seating with seatbelts for travel. Many hosts include a TV, outdoor camp chairs, an awning, and increasingly Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink, which is a lifesaver in spots with patchy cell signal around Tuscarora State Forest. Generators are common in Class C rigs for off-grid forest sites. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host if you need specific add-ons like a bike rack or grill for your Port Royal RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Port%20Royal%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for a campervan rental Port Royal?
RVezy hosts offer plenty of add-ons to customize your campervan rental Port Royal experience. Popular options include kitchen and linen packages, generators, bike racks, kayaks (perfect for paddling the Juniata River Water Trail), outdoor furniture, and propane refills. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a meeting point in Port Royal, Mifflintown, or along US-322, but many hosts also offer delivery directly to River Rock Camping & RV Park or Shoop's Country Campground for a flat fee. Mileage allowances typically run 100-150 free miles per night with reasonable overage rates. Pro tip: message the host before booking to bundle delivery, setup, and a kayak, it often saves money over booking separately.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Port%20Royal%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Port Royal RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay directly through the RVezy platform with a credit card, with no cash exchanged with the host. Your trip total (nightly rate, fees, mileage allowance, and protection plan) is charged at booking, and the host receives funds after your trip starts. A refundable security deposit, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, is held on your card before pickup and released after a clean, damage-free return. To avoid any hold-up, take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, refill propane and fuel per the agreement, and follow the host's dump-and-clean checklist. That way your deposit comes back fast and you can start planning your next Port Royal RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a family RV trip Port Royal a good idea for kids?
It's one of the best family RV trips in Pennsylvania. Kids love watching sprint cars rip around Port Royal Speedway (the half-mile dirt track known as The Speed Palace), tubing and fishing the Juniata River from River Rock Camping & RV Park, and exploring the historic covered bridges over Tuscarora Creek. Add a day trip to Hershey's Chocolate World (about 1 hour 15 minutes), Knoebels Amusement Park (around 90 minutes), or hiking the Hoverter and Sholl Box Huckleberry Natural Area, home to an ancient huckleberry colony. Most family-sized Class C motorhomes on RVezy sleep 6-8 with bunk beds and seatbelts in travel positions. Pro tip: book a riverside site so the kids can splash while you grill dinner.
