Camping near Salona, Pennsylvania
Salona sits in Clinton County in the Bald Eagle Valley of northcentral Pennsylvania, within easy reach of both private RV parks and Pennsylvania's state park and state forest camping systems. The village lies just off the corridor between Lock Haven and Bellefonte, giving RV renters quick access to I-80 and PA 150.
The nearest full-service private option is Holiday Pines Campground in Loganton, a small family park in the PA Wilds offering tent sites, water and electric sites, and full-hookup sites, plus cabin and cottage rentals. West of Salona, Bald Eagle State Park anchors the region's public camping, and to the south, Woodward Cave and Campground, Hemlock Acres Camping Area, and Poe Paddy State Park sit within the Seven Mountains and Penns Creek country.
The surrounding Bald Eagle State Forest spans multiple counties across the ridge-and-valley region, so most campgrounds are within a short drive of ridge trails, trout streams, and forest roads suitable for day trips.
Things to do near Salona
Bald Eagle State Park's Russell P. Letterman Campground sits less than a mile from the beach, marina, and other park facilities, with boating, fishing, and swimming on Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir. The Nature Inn on site functions as a premier interpretive facility for bird watching, and bald eagle sightings are common.
Fly anglers head to Penns Creek at Poe Paddy State Park, a trout angler's paradise featuring the nationally recognized green drake mayfly hatch in June. The Mid State Trail passes through the park, and paddlers can access Penns Creek directly.
Woodward Cave, one of Pennsylvania's largest caves, runs guided walking tours in the warmer months and stays a steady 48 degrees inside. Winter visitors to Bald Eagle State Park can ice fish, ice skate, cross-country ski, and snowmobile when conditions allow.

The main camping season in this part of Pennsylvania runs from mid-April through mid-December. The Russell P. Letterman Campground at Bald Eagle State Park is a modern camping area that opens the second Friday of April and closes in mid-December. Poe Paddy operates seasonally from early April through mid-December, and access is exclusively via unpaved mountain roads, which are not maintained in winter.
Summer brings the busiest weekends, with warm days ideal for the reservoir beach, paddling, and Penns Creek fishing. Early June is the peak for the green drake hatch and books out well ahead.
Spring and fall are cooler and quieter, with wetter conditions in spring and strong foliage color on Bald Eagle Mountain in October. Winter camping is limited to year-round private parks and select state park facilities, and many state forest roads are not plowed.

How to book campsites near Salona
Pennsylvania state park and state forest campsites, including those at Bald Eagle State Park and Poe Paddy State Park, are booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Reservations can be made online or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday.
Campsite reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania state park reservation system, either online or by phone. Bald Eagle State Forest roadside campsites use a similar window, with stays capped at seven nights.
Private campgrounds in the area, including Holiday Pines Campground, Woodward Cave and Campground, and Hemlock Acres Camping Area, book directly through the campground's own website or phone. Summer weekends, holiday periods, and Penn State football weekends fill quickly and should be reserved well in advance.
What to expect camping near Salona
Expect a mix of rustic public sites and full-service private parks. At Poe Paddy, amenities are basic by design: vault toilets and drinking water are available on-site, but showers and a dump station require a trip to nearby Poe Valley State Park. Access to Poe Paddy is entirely on unpaved mountain roads.
Bald Eagle State Park's Russell P. Letterman Campground is a modern camping area with a full range of facilities, and yurts and camping cottages are available for renters without their own gear. Private options like Holiday Pines and Hemlock Acres add pools, game rooms, laundry, and cabin rentals.
RV renters should confirm site length limits before booking. At Poe Paddy, site lengths vary from 15 to 40 feet, all back-in only. Cell service is strong at the private parks but unreliable deep in the state forest.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Salona, PA
How much does an RV rental in Salona, PA typically cost?
An RV rental in Salona, PA is one of the best values in central Pennsylvania, with most rigs falling between $95 and $250 per night depending on type and season. Compact campervans and travel trailers from Lock Haven and Mill Hall hosts tend toward the lower end, while spacious Class C motorhomes ideal for a family RV trip run higher. You can trim costs by booking mid-week, traveling in May or October shoulder seasons, and filtering for hosts who include generous mileage. Pro tip: a cheap RV rental in Salona often pairs with a quiet Bald Eagle Valley campsite Sunday through Thursday, saving you 15 to 25 percent.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Salona,%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Salona, PA?
For the vast majority of RVs on the platform, your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Salona. Pennsylvania only requires a non-commercial Class B license when a single vehicle has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, which almost no peer-to-peer rental hits. Renters must generally be 25 or older with a valid license, and identification is verified through the RVezy platform before pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license. Most first-time renters in Clinton County are pleasantly surprised at how straightforward the process is.

RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Specific terms depend on how far out you cancel and circumstances such as natural disasters, and the full details are on the RVezy Help Center. pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesCan the RV be delivered to me in Salona or a nearby campground?
Yes, RV delivery in Salona is one of the smartest moves first-timers make. Many local hosts will drop the rig directly at Bald Eagle State Park, Hyner Run State Park, or a private property near Mill Hall, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing stress, no learning to back into a site, just arrive and start your vacation. Delivery fees vary by host and distance. Filter for Delivery on the listing page and message the host with your destination to lock it in.

Late April through mid-October is prime time for a Salona RV trip, with June, September, and early October being the absolute sweet spot. Summer highs in Clinton County hover near 82 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, while spring and fall days sit in the mid-60s to 70s with crisp, comfortable nights perfect for campfires. Fall foliage along Pine Creek Gorge typically peaks in the second and third weeks of October, an iconic central PA experience. Winter motorhome rental in Salona is possible with a four-season rig, but campgrounds like Bald Eagle's Letterman close after deer season in mid-December. Book fall weekends early, leaf-peepers fill up fast.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Salona?
You've got this, and Salona is actually a great place for a first time renting an RV. The area has wide rural roads, low traffic outside of I-80, and forgiving back routes through Lamar Township and Nittany Valley to practice on before tackling bigger drives. Every host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering driving, leveling, dumping tanks, and propane, and you can text them throughout your trip. Many guests start with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Salona to ease in. Pro tip: take a slow lap around Bald Eagle State Park's flat campground roads on day one to build confidence before heading to Pine Creek Gorge.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're covered around the clock. Every RV rental in Salona, PA includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on US 220, a dead battery at a Mill Hall trailhead, or a tow off Pennsylvania Route 477 is just a phone call away. Your host is also typically a quick text away, since many live within 15 minutes of Salona and know the rig inside and out. RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip if you hit any snags. Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside number on your dashboard at pickup so it's instantly accessible.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Salona RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is on the table, and that's part of the fun of an RV road trip from Salona. From Clinton County you're within easy reach of New York's Finger Lakes (about 3 hours north), Niagara Falls (about 5 hours northwest), Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (about 5 hours south), and the Jersey Shore (about 4 hours east). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper documentation, so message the host before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Always carry your booking documents at the border.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for a motorhome rental in Salona is easier than you'd think. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10 to 14 for a Class C, 16 to 20 for a campervan, and your tow vehicle's normal MPG (minus 25 percent) when pulling a travel trailer. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average; check current rates at Pilot in Mill Hall (I-80 Exit 173) and Sheetz in Lock Haven for the best local fill-ups. For a typical 4-night, 300-mile Bald Eagle Valley loop in a Class C, plan around $130 to $170 in fuel. Pro tip: download GasBuddy and fill up before leaving I-80 corridor where prices tend to spike on smaller routes.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Salona?
Pennsylvania state parks let you reserve sites up to 11 months in advance, and for popular summer weekends at Bald Eagle State Park you absolutely want to book that early. Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and fall foliage weekends in October sell out months ahead. Reservations go through ReserveAmerica at pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Mid-week and shoulder-season stays often have day-of availability, perfect for spontaneous Salona getaways. Pro tip: if Bald Eagle is full, check Hyner Run, Kettle Creek, or R.B. Winter State Parks, all within an hour, and all far less crowded.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsitesWhat are driving conditions like around Salona?
Driving an RV around Salona is refreshingly mellow compared to a major metro. Interstate 80 runs just north of town and is well-maintained with generous shoulders, and US 220 (now I-99 in stretches) is a smooth ride south toward State College. Watch for steep grades and tight curves on PA Route 120 through Bucktail State Park Natural Area, and stay alert for deer at dawn and dusk, especially in Lamar Township farmland. Winter brings snow and occasional ice from December through March, so check 511PA before driving. Pro tip: avoid the narrow back roads up to Hyner View overlook in a Class A; park lower and shuttle up in a tow vehicle.
511pa.com/What hookups, dump stations, and water fills are available near Salona?
You'll find solid infrastructure for RV camping in Salona. Bald Eagle State Park's Russell P. Letterman Campground has 30 and 50-amp electric, a sanitary dump station, and potable water fills, with select sites offering full hookups (sewer, water, electric). Hyner Run State Park provides a dump station and water fill open seasonally. Most Clinton County private campgrounds, including options near Lock Haven, offer full hookups year-round. Many state park bathhouses switch to non-flush facilities in colder months. Pro tip: top off freshwater before leaving the campground; potable water taps along PA 477 and US 220 are limited, so stocking up at your site saves headaches on travel days.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/bald-eagle-state-park/stayWhat amenities come with a typical RV rental in Salona?
You'll be impressed by what's already onboard. Most RV rentals in Salona come fully equipped with a queen or king bed plus convertible bunks or dinettes, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and a propane grill. Generator-equipped Class C and Class A motorhomes are common for off-grid camping near Hyner View or Sproul State Forest. Wifi is hit-or-miss in the Bald Eagle Valley; bring a hotspot if you need to stay connected. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list and ask the host what kitchen and linens are included before packing.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/bald-eagle-state-parkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You have great flexibility when you rent an RV in Salona. Common add-ons include linen and kitchen kits ($35 to $75), portable generators ($15 to $30 per night), bike racks, kayak racks, camp chairs, outdoor grills, and pet cleaning fees for the pet-friendly rigs. Many hosts also sell prepaid mileage and propane refill packages. Pickup is typically at the host's address near Salona, Mill Hall, or Lock Haven, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Delivery to Bald Eagle State Park, Hyner Run, or private property is offered by many hosts. Pro tip: Instant Book listings confirm immediately, perfect if you want to lock in a peak fall foliage weekend without messaging back and forth.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/bald-eagle-state-parkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit is held before the trip and released after the RV is returned in good condition. To avoid any deposit issues on your campervan rental in Salona, take dated photos at pickup and dropoff, return with a similar fuel and propane level, and dump tanks if the host requests. Pro tip: review the host's mileage, generator, and cleaning policies before pickup so there are no surprises at the end of your Clinton County adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for a Salona RV trip?
Here's the move locals love: from Salona, drive 25 minutes north on PA Route 120 (the Bucktail Scenic Byway) to Hyner View State Park's hang-glider launch, where the overlook gives you a sweeping view of the West Branch Susquehanna River carving through the mountains, especially magical at sunrise or peak foliage in mid-October. On the way back, stop at the Old School Farm, Food and Flea Market in Salona on a Saturday for kettle corn, local honey, and Amish baked goods. Cap the day with a campfire at Bald Eagle State Park and you've nailed a quintessential central Pennsylvania family RV trip. Few visitors know this combo, but every Clinton County local does.
