Campgrounds and RV parks near State College, PA

State College sits in central Pennsylvania's ridge-and-valley country, surrounded by state forests, trout streams, and small lakes that make the area a practical base for RV trips. Penn State University anchors the town, and the calendar of home football weekends drives demand at every campground within an hour's drive. Outside those weekends, sites are generally easier to secure. The closest public camping is at Greenwood Furnace State Park, which covers 423 acres including a six-acre lake, campground, hiking trails, and a historic district, with access to backpacking, hiking, mountain biking, hunting, and fishing in the surrounding Rothrock State Forest. To the northwest, Black Moshannon State Park campground offers 73 campsites in the heart of central Pennsylvania's Moshannon State Forest. Private options round out the mix. Gram and Paps Fort Bellefonte Campground and the Bellefonte / State College KOA Holiday sit closer to town and typically offer longer seasons and more full-hookup sites than the state parks. Centre County Grange Fairgrounds provides overflow-style RV camping tied to events.

Pennsylvania state park reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance through the state's online reservation portal. Bookings for Greenwood Furnace and Black Moshannon flow through that portal or by phone. Popular loops sell out first for holiday weekends, so book as early as the window opens. Penn State home football weekends are the tightest booking window of the year across the region. Any site within an hour of campus, including the KOA, Fort Bellefonte, and the Grange Fairgrounds during event weekends, should be locked in months ahead. Private campgrounds accept reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Confirm rig length, hookup type, and pet policies at booking, since pets are only permitted in designated areas and overnight guests with pets must reserve designated facilities at Pennsylvania state parks.
