Campgrounds near Strodes Mills, Pennsylvania
Strodes Mills sits in central Mifflin County along U.S. Routes 22 and 522, between McVeytown and the borough of Lewistown. The area is rural farm and ridge country on the western edge of the Seven Mountains region, with Rothrock State Forest and the Juniata River corridor within easy driving distance. It is a practical base for RV renters heading to Penn State, the Amish community around Belleville, or the ridges and streams of central Pennsylvania.
Campground choices within roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive cover several styles of trip. Waterside Campground and RV Park sits on the Juniata River just outside Lewistown, with full-hookup and riverfront sites. Greenwood Furnace State Park offers a wooded state-park campground adjacent to Rothrock State Forest. Hartman Center Campground, Seven Mountains Campground, and Wildwood RV Resort round out the private options with cabins, pull-throughs, and family amenities.
Roads in this part of the state follow river valleys and mountain gaps, so drivers of larger rigs should plan routes on U.S. 22 and U.S. 322 rather than narrow forest roads.
Things to do near Strodes Mills
Outdoor activity centers on the ridges and waterways. Waterside Campground and RV Park sits between the Juniata River and the historic Pennsylvania Canal, with river access for fishing and swimming, a heated pool, and rentals of pedal carts, tubes, canoes, and kayaks. The Juniata, Standing Stone Creek, and Spruce Creek are well known for trout, and many sections are stocked.
Greenwood Furnace State Park gives access to hiking, mountain biking, a small lake for swimming and fishing, and the Standing Stone and Mid State Trails through the surrounding 80,000-acre Rothrock State Forest. The park also preserves a 19th-century ironmaking village with a reconstructed furnace stack and interpretive signage.
Off-park stops include the Wednesday livestock and produce sale in Belleville, State College and Penn State roughly 30 to 45 minutes northwest, and Reeds Gap and Poe Valley State Parks for day trips.

Central Pennsylvania has four distinct seasons. Pennsylvania state park campgrounds, including Greenwood Furnace, generally run from mid-April through mid-November, so shoulder-season RV renters should confirm the park is open before booking. Private parks such as Waterside Campground and RV Park and Seven Mountains Campground operate year round, though services like pools and canal rides are seasonal.
Summer, especially late June through mid-August, is the busiest window. Weekends around July 4 and Labor Day fill early at riverfront and state-park sites, and Penn State football weekends in September and October drive strong demand at campgrounds within an hour of State College, including Seven Mountains Campground.
Fall brings peak foliage across the ridges in October into early November, with cool nights and comfortable days. Winter camping is possible at the private year-round parks, but expect cold overnight lows, occasional snow, and limited amenities. Spring can be wet, with the Juniata River running high after snowmelt and heavy rain.
How to book campgrounds near Strodes Mills
Greenwood Furnace State Park uses the Pennsylvania state park reservation system. Sites can be reserved online through the DCNR reservation portal or by calling 888-PA-PARKS, and the booking window opens up to eleven months in advance. Reservations are strongly recommended in summer and on holiday weekends, since the campground has only fifty-one sites and often sells out.
Private campgrounds in the area, including Waterside Campground and RV Park, Seven Mountains Campground, Hartman Center Campground, and Wildwood RV Resort, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Many hold a portion of sites for short-term stays while the rest are seasonal.
For Penn State football weekends and July 4 week, book two to three months out. For state park sites in peak summer, aim for at least four to eight weeks ahead, and set cancellation alerts if the dates are already full.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a rural, ridge-and-valley setting with narrow secondary roads, farmland, and mixed hardwood forest. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania state parks, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is worthwhile.
Site mix varies by park. Greenwood Furnace State Park has forty-nine tent and trailer sites plus two walk-in sites, with forty-four offering electric hookups, a shower house with flush toilets and warm showers, and a dump station at the campground entrance. Waterside Campground and RV Park has close to 250 sites, many seasonal, with full hookups on most sites and riverfront short-term sites along the Juniata. Alcohol is not permitted in Pennsylvania state parks, and pets are allowed at designated sites only.
Firewood is generally sold on site at Greenwood Furnace, and bringing outside firewood is discouraged to limit the spread of pests.
