Campgrounds near Sylvan Hills

Sylvan Hills is a small census-designated place in central Blair County, Pennsylvania, bordered to the south by Hollidaysburg and sitting about five miles south of Altoona in the Allegheny Mountains. The area works well as an RV base because it sits along the I-99 corridor with quick access to state parks, national forest land, and Raystown Lake, the largest lake entirely within Pennsylvania. RV travelers have several private parks within easy reach. Wrights Orchard Station Campground and Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade are among the closest options, while Glendale Valley Campground sits near Prince Gallitzin State Park and Glendale Lake, roughly a half-hour drive northwest. James Creek RV Resort and Lake Raystown Resort and Lodge both sit near Raystown Lake, southeast of Sylvan Hills, and cater to larger rigs with full hookups. The terrain is mountainous with forested ridges and river valleys, so expect winding two-lane approaches to some campgrounds. Grocery, fuel, and RV service are readily available in Altoona and Hollidaysburg before heading to more remote sites.

Things to do around Sylvan Hills

Raystown Lake is the regional headliner. The 8,300-acre reservoir stretches about 28 miles with roughly 118 miles of shoreline, and unlimited-horsepower boating means waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and pontoon cruising are all on the menu, along with bass, striper, and panfish fishing. Rental boats and pontoons are available at Seven Points Marina and at Lake Raystown Resort and Lodge. Prince Gallitzin State Park centers on the 1,635-acre Glendale Lake with 26 miles of shoreline, a warm-water fishery with nine boat launches and two marinas, three public beaches, and about 12 miles of trails open to hiking, with some sections used for mountain biking and horseback riding. Trough Creek State Park sits close to James Creek RV Resort and offers hiking through a rugged gorge. Closer to Sylvan Hills, families can catch an Altoona Curve minor-league baseball game at Peoples Natural Gas Field and ride Leap-the-Dips at Lakemont Park, the oldest operating roller coaster in the world.

Wettest stretch of the year; trout season opens.
summer
June - August
79° / 57°F 90 mm
Peak bookings; lakeside sites fill weeks out.

Cool nights, foliage peaks mid-October, easier reservations.
winter
December - February
34° / 21°F 65 mm
Freezing and snowy; most private parks closed or limited.

Peak RV season runs April through October, when the lakes are open and campgrounds are fully staffed. July and August draw the biggest crowds for swimming, tubing, and beach days, and weekend sites at Raystown Lake and Prince Gallitzin fill early. September and October are the sweet spot for RV travel: cool nights, fall foliage across the Alleghenies, and easier reservations, though marinas and some concessions begin to close. Spring brings stocked-trout fishing, wildflowers, and higher water levels, but also the wettest stretch of the year around May. Expect muddy sites and cool overnight lows into early May. Winter camping is possible but limited. Snow, freezing temperatures, and reduced services mean most private parks scale back or close. Glendale Valley Campground stays open through hunting season, which is a draw for rifle-deer weekends in late November and early December. Confirm winter hookup availability and road access before booking.

Shawn and Melinda made it easy to hold a memorable Penn State tailgate, even for someone like me who is new to RV rental. The Beaver Stadium RV lot didn’t have RV hookups so they made sure we had water and extra gas for the generator. They thought if every detail. The RV was super clean and well-stocked. They had excellent communication and were so friendly and helpful. I would 100% rent from them again.

This was my first time renting an RV and it was the smoothest process! The hosts were in contact with me before delivery so I knew exactly when they would arrive. They were so friendly and set up the entire camper and gave me a tour. We had an awesome experience, thank you!

What an incredible first experience! Tony is an outstanding host. He thoroughly went over the RV with me and communication was on point. The value matched the cost. The RV was so fun to drive. It was super clean, and very comfortable. We will be renting again for sure!

This was a great RV for our camping trip to see fall foliage. It slept our group of 3 adults and 2 children very comfortably (particularly with a slider that allowed for a soft and full queen bed), had space to socialize, play games, and warm up from the outside. The stove and oven cooked beautifully and had enough heat to power through a large meal; the water could be adjusted to very hot, which was fantastic. The bathroom was roomy enough for a shower and sink. The fridge/freezer had plenty of space and kept everything nice and cold. I can’t say enough good things about the heat, it was powerful and immediate; we ended up being in some unexpectedly frosty and windy weather but never even noticed inside. Everyone slept like babies! There is storage space in a large compartment on the outside and multiple small cabinets for things inside. The power and water hook-up is a breeze, the dumping the same. You have large windows and plenty of inside lighting. As the driver, I appreciated how large my windshield viewing area was and it handled well. The only small flaw was the cracking and flaking of the seat and armrest upholstery but that was strictly cosmetic and had no negative impact on our enjoyment. Tony was a pleasure to deal with and very responsive. A positive experience all the way around!

How to book a campground near Sylvan Hills

Bookings split across two systems. Federal sites at Raystown Lake, including Seven Points and Susquehannock, are managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and reserved through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window. Pennsylvania State Parks, including Prince Gallitzin, can be reserved up to 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival, through the state's reservation portal or by phone. Private parks handle their own reservations. Lake Raystown Resort and Lodge and James Creek RV Resort both take direct online and phone bookings, and both fill weekends well in advance during peak season. Glendale Valley Campground, Wrights Orchard Station Campground, and Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade generally book by phone or through their own websites. For holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day), reserve as early as the window opens. Cell coverage is spotty at several campgrounds, so confirm details before leaving service.

What to expect

Expect Appalachian ridge-and-valley terrain: forested campsites, gravel or paved pads at private parks, and quieter dirt loops at Army Corps and state park campgrounds. Full hookups are most common at James Creek RV Resort and Lake Raystown Resort and Lodge. Corps sites at Seven Points and Susquehannock offer electric hookups and picnic tables, with shared water hydrants along the loops rather than at each pad. Cell service is unreliable in the deeper valleys near Raystown Lake and around Prince Gallitzin. Download maps offline before arrival. Black bears and deer are common, so standard food storage rules apply. Summer humidity can be high and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, and the region falls within a moderate Lyme-disease risk zone. Bring repellent and check regularly after hikes.
