Campgrounds near Thompsontown, Pennsylvania
Thompsontown sits along the Juniata River in Juniata County, roughly midway between Harrisburg and State College. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Juniata and Susquehanna river valleys, with camping options that range from a state park to private riverfront resorts.
The closest public option is Little Buffalo State Park, southwest of Newport in Perry County. The campground sits in the wooded hills within a 923-acre park centered on Holman Lake, and its sites include primitive walk-to sites, sites with water and electric hookups, and a small number of full-hookup sites for RV campers. Sites can accommodate rigs up to roughly 55 feet, though the two full-hookup sites are limited to 40 feet.
Private campgrounds in the surrounding area include Buttonwood Campground and Shady Brook Campground and Boat Rental, LLC along nearby waterways, Lake Heron Retreat inland, and Ferryboat Campsites in Liverpool, situated directly on the Susquehanna River with river views and water access. Together these give travelers a mix of state-park quiet and full-service private stays within a short drive of town.
Things to do near Thompsontown
Water activities dominate the local calendar. The Juniata and Susquehanna rivers support kayaking, tubing, and warm-water fishing, and many campers enjoy the river views and the chance to engage in tubing, fishing, and kayaking from riverfront sites. At Ferryboat Campsites, the historic Millersburg Ferry that gives the campground its name crosses the Susquehanna nearby, and kayak and canoe rentals are available on site.
At Little Buffalo State Park, Holman Lake offers fishing, boat rentals, and paddling, and historic attractions include Shoaff's Mill and a covered bridge. Several miles of trails wind through the surrounding forests, suitable for hiking. A swimming pool with two slides and a splash pad is located in the main day-use area and typically operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with daily hours during the peak summer weeks and weekend-only operation on the shoulders of that window.

The core camping window in central Pennsylvania runs from spring through mid-fall. The modern campground at Little Buffalo State Park generally operates from mid-April through the third Sunday in October, and most private campgrounds in the area follow a similar seasonal calendar. Winter camping is limited: state park tent and RV sites close, and private resorts scale back to seasonal residents only.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Warm weather, working swim beaches, and school breaks push weekend demand hard, especially around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. State parks apply a maximum stay limit, typically two weeks during the camping season, which helps turnover but does not ease weekend competition.
Spring and early fall are the quieter shoulders. Days are mild, bugs are lighter, and midweek reservations open up. Fall foliage in the ridge-and-valley country typically peaks in mid- to late October, though by then most campground amenities such as pools and boat rentals have shut down for the season.

Sandy went above and beyond. Leading up to the rental dates she was in communication, making sure we were on the same page. I opted for delivery rather than pickup, and she made sure the rv was delivered early so we could fully enjoy the rental dates. We had a normal issue w the AC (the unit froze) but she was very communicative and helpful until the problem was solved (she suggested to turn it to fan in case the unit was frozen, and it quickly thawed). Always very sweet and courteous, always responsive. My four year old son loved the trailer, was very upset to understand that we had to give it back 😂. Thanks, Sandy!

How to book campgrounds near Thompsontown
Public and private campgrounds use different booking systems. For Little Buffalo State Park, reservations run through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations system on ReserveAmerica, or by phone at 888-PA-PARKS. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance, with the daily release at noon Eastern; popular summer weekends move quickly at that window.
Private campgrounds such as Ferryboat Campsites, Buttonwood Campground, Shady Brook Campground and Boat Rental, LLC, and Lake Heron Retreat handle bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. Riverfront sites and full-hookup pads sell out first, particularly for holiday weekends and themed event weekends.
Before booking, confirm rig length, hookup type, and pet policy against site specifics, since some full-hookup sites at Little Buffalo cap out around 40 feet.
What to expect
Expect small-town central Pennsylvania: two-lane highways, wooded ridges, and rivers close at hand. Cell coverage is generally serviceable along the main corridors but can drop in the hollows. Grocery runs are easiest in Newport, Millerstown, or across the river toward Millersburg.
Campground character varies. Little Buffalo State Park is quiet and rule-forward. Alcohol is prohibited in Pennsylvania state parks, fires are allowed only in designated areas and must be attended, pets must be kept on a leash and under control, and quiet hours typically run from 9 pm to 8 am. Private resorts trend more social, with organized weekends and family programming.
At Ferryboat Campsites, close to 300 sites are available across seasonal and short-stay spots, with cable TV and Wi-Fi hotspots on site. Riverfront sites in the low numbers, right on the Susquehanna, are the most sought after.

Summer highs in Thompsontown average in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit with humid afternoons, while spring and fall days run a comfortable 60 to 75 degrees. Pro tip: book a September weekday and you'll have the riverside campsites mostly to yourself.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Thompsontown?
You've got this, and Thompsontown is a great place for first time renting an RV. The roads around town are rural and lightly trafficked, and US Route 22/322 is a wide, well-maintained four-lane highway perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, water, electric, propane, and the dump valves, and you can message them anytime during your trip. If you're nervous about size, start with a Class B campervan or a 22 to 25 foot Class C, both drive much like a large van. Pro tip: take a short practice loop on a quiet rural road near the Juniata before heading to your campground.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Thompsontown includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, they know their rig best and can often troubleshoot small issues in minutes. RVezy's customer support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip if you need extra help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Thompsontown RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals, so an RV road trip from Thompsontown can easily take you into New York's Finger Lakes (about 200 miles north), Washington DC (about 130 miles south), the New Jersey shore (around 200 miles east), or West Virginia's Seneca Rocks (around 180 miles southwest). Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed by many hosts as long as you confirm with them first and bring your passport. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Message the host through the listing page before booking to confirm your route, and you're set for an epic multi-state adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Thompsontown RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. Pennsylvania gas prices in the Thompsontown area typically run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes. Travel trailers towed by a pickup get roughly 10 to 14 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs land around 6 to 10 mpg. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop through Juniata County, plan on roughly $90 to $160 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at the larger truck stops along US 322 near Lewistown before heading into the mountains, smaller stations in the Tuscarora valley often charge noticeably more.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Thompsontown?
For the best sites, book early but don't panic. Pennsylvania state parks like Little Buffalo and Reeds Gap open reservations up to 11 months ahead through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends at popular spots can fill 4 to 6 months out. Private campgrounds like Buttonwood typically accept reservations a year in advance and hold strong availability if you book 6 to 8 weeks ahead for weekends. Midweek and shoulder-season stays are often available just days before arrival. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, target a Sunday through Thursday stretch in June or September, you'll find open riverfront sites and quieter campgrounds without the holiday-weekend rush.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Thompsontown?
Driving an RV around Thompsontown is genuinely pleasant. US Route 22/322 is a divided four-lane highway with gentle grades, generous shoulders, and easy on/off ramps that handle motorhomes of any size with no problem. Once you turn onto rural routes like PA 75 or PA 35 through the ridges of Juniata and Mifflin counties, the roads narrow and have a few twisty climbs over Tuscarora Mountain, so take your time and use lower gears on descents. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, this is one of Pennsylvania's highest deer-density regions. Winter can bring snow squalls between November and March. Pro tip: stick to the main 322 corridor in a long Class A rather than narrow mountain back roads.

For potable water and dumping mid-trip, many local campgrounds offer day-use dump service for a small fee. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving Thompsontown, many state-forest sites have no water access at all.

Mileage policies vary by listing, with daily caps clearly shown and unlimited-mileage options available on some rigs. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and dump service for a true turnkey trip, especially smart for first-timers and families with young kids.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Thompsontown%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
It's all simple, secure, and handled through RVezy, so no cash changes hands with the host. You'll pay the full booking total (rental, protection, fees, and any add-ons) by credit card when you confirm. The refundable security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is held on your card before the trip starts. The deposit amount is shown on the listing and typically ranges from $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition with no policy violations, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, it's the easiest way to keep your full deposit and end your Thompsontown adventure on a high note.
