Campgrounds near Ulysses, Pennsylvania
Ulysses sits in northern Potter County in the Pennsylvania Wilds, a lightly populated region of hardwood forest, trout streams, and dark night skies. The borough is a practical base for RV trips into the surrounding Susquehannock State Forest and the Pine Creek Gorge area, with most nearby campgrounds within a 30 to 60 minute drive.
Options range from private RV parks with full hookups to rustic state-park campgrounds. Snyder's Family Campground and Trout Run Camp Resort, both south of Ulysses near Gaines, offer serviced RV sites, cabins, and family amenities. Crooked Creek Campground, also in the Gaines area, caters to families with gated access and activities for children.
For a more primitive experience, Patterson State Park and Cherry Springs State Park sit within the Susquehannock State Forest, which comprises about 265,000 acres in Potter, Clinton, and McKean counties. Cherry Springs was designated the world's second International Dark Sky Park in 2007 and holds Gold Tier status, while Patterson serves as a small first-come, first-served trailhead campground for backpackers on the Susquehannock Trail System.
Things to do near Ulysses
Stargazing is the signature activity. Cherry Springs offers two viewing areas: a Night Sky Public Viewing Area for short-term visitors that does not permit camping, and an Overnight Astronomy Observation Field that is open through the night and requires advance registration.
Daytime recreation centers on the Susquehannock Trail System, an 85-mile backpacking and hiking trail that passes through Patterson State Park, plus miles of state forest roads open to hiking, mountain biking, ATVs, and snowmobiles in season. Pine Creek and its rail-trail, closer to Snyder's Family Campground and Crooked Creek Campground, offer fly fishing, tubing, and long flat cycling routes into the Pine Creek Gorge, often called the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.
Families also use Trout Run Camp Resort as a base for shorter day trips to Leonard Harrison and Colton Point state parks on either rim of the gorge.

The camping season in this part of north-central Pennsylvania is short. The rustic campground at Cherry Springs opens the second Friday in April and closes the last weekend in October, and Patterson opens in April and closes in late October. Private parks such as Snyder's Family Campground follow a similar April to October window. Winter access to sites is generally limited to day use, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing on state forest trails.
Summer weekends are the busiest period. New moon periods book earliest at Cherry Springs due to optimal viewing conditions, and demand spills over to nearby options such as Patterson and Lyman Run. Fall brings cooler nights, strong foliage color through the hardwoods, and lighter crowds after Labor Day.
Spring shoulder season can be wet and cold, with overnight frosts common into May at elevation. Biting insects, particularly black flies, peak in late spring and early summer, so screens and repellent are worth planning around.
How to book
Pennsylvania state park sites at Cherry Springs are reserved through the state's ReserveAmerica-powered portal or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Reservations can be made for today and up to 11 months in advance, and popular weekends can sell out early, especially those tied to new moons and star parties.
Patterson State Park has first come, first serve camping. It is not available for advanced reservations. Visitors use the honor entry process at the park to register upon arrival. Arrive earlier in the day on summer weekends to secure a site.
Private campgrounds including Snyder's Family Campground, Crooked Creek Campground, and Trout Run Camp Resort take direct reservations through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends and hunting season openers should be booked several weeks ahead.
What to expect on arrival
Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks. Coverage exists on major routes and in towns but drops out inside the state forest, so download maps and confirmation details before leaving pavement. At Cherry Springs, a separate Overnight Astronomy Observation Field is available for registered users who need strict dark sky conditions, where white light and campfires are prohibited.
State park campgrounds in this area are rustic. The rustic campground at Cherry Springs has 30 non-electric campsites, non-flush restrooms, and a sanitary dump station. Private parks including Snyder's Family Campground and Trout Run Camp Resort offer full hookups, showers, and dump stations.
Wildlife is common, with black bear, deer, and other species in the surrounding forest. Store food properly and keep pets leashed. The nearest hospital is UPMC Cole at 1001 East Second Street in Coudersport, roughly a 20 to 30 minute drive from most campgrounds listed here.
