Camping near Wellsboro, Pennsylvania
Wellsboro sits in Tioga County in north-central Pennsylvania and serves as the main base for visits to Pine Creek Gorge, widely known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. The gorge is 47 miles long and reaches its deepest point of 1,450 feet at Waterville, while at Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks it is more than 800 feet deep, and it sits in about 160,000 acres of the Tioga State Forest. The town itself is compact and walkable, which makes it a practical hub for RV travelers looking for groceries, fuel, and repair services between park visits.
RV options in the area split between one state park campground and several privately run properties. Hills Creek State Park offers the closest public sites, while Stony Fork Creek Campground, Grand Canyon Motel Resort & Campground, Canyon Country Campground, and Twin Streams Campground provide private alternatives with full hookups, cabins, and family amenities.
Most campgrounds cluster within a short drive of US Route 6, the main east-west corridor through the region. That location puts travelers within reach of both the east rim at Leonard Harrison State Park and the west rim at Colton Point State Park, plus access points to the Pine Creek Rail Trail.
Things to do around Wellsboro
The two canyon-rim state parks are the main draw. At Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks, the depth of the PA Grand Canyon is about 800 feet and these parks have the most spectacular scenic overlooks, and both have picnic areas suitable for a mid-hike lunch.
Cyclists head for the Pine Creek Rail Trail. After rail service ended in 1988, the corridor was transformed into a 62-mile non-motorized trail stretching from Jersey Shore to Wellsboro Junction, and the route has a gentle downhill slope from north to south, which makes it manageable for kids and casual riders. Outfitters in and around Wellsboro rent bikes and run shuttles.
On the water, Pine Creek supports kayaking and float trips in higher spring flows, while the 137-acre Hills Creek Lake is a great warm water fishery and provides opportunities for fishing, swimming, and boating. Downtown Wellsboro adds gaslit streets, diners, and small shops for a rainy-day break.

The main camping season runs from mid-spring to mid-fall. Hills Creek State Park is open mid-April to mid-October, and most private campgrounds in the area follow a similar window, with some opening slightly earlier or closing after leaf season.
Summer is the busiest stretch. School-holiday weeks, Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day fill sites early, and weekly reservations are required at Hills Creek cabins during the summer. Fall brings the strongest scenery: the canyon walls light up with color from late September through mid-October, and weekend sites near the rim book out well in advance during peak foliage.
Winter camping is limited. Ten modern cabins at Hills Creek can be rented year round, but most RV loops and private campgrounds close for the season. Spring shoulder weeks tend to be quiet, with cool nights and wetter trails but far more site availability.

We had an awesome experience renting Mikayla’s camper and would absolutely rent it again! From the first moment we spoke, to picking it up and dropping it off, everything was simple and stress-free. Hitching and unhitching were easy, and Mikayla had everything we needed for full hookups—sewer line, water hoses, water filter, and even a drill for the leveling jacks. What really impressed us was how well stocked the camper was. Plates, silverware, cooking supplies, sugar, cooking spray, beds with full linens, and towels—you could tell a lot of thought went into making sure guests had everything they needed. There was plenty of room for our family of four, and we had a fantastic camping trip. If you’re considering renting this camper, I highly recommend it!

How to book a campsite near Wellsboro
Hills Creek State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Online reservations can be made for day use and overnight facilities, or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, so peak summer and foliage weekends should be locked in as early as possible.
Private campgrounds including Stony Fork Creek Campground, Grand Canyon Motel Resort & Campground, Canyon Country Campground, and Twin Streams Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone. For holiday weekends, reserving several months out is recommended.
Pet-friendly options at Hills Creek are limited: up to two dogs are permitted in Cabins #1, #2, and #3 for a fee, so filter for the correct site when booking with a dog.
What to expect on the ground
Sites vary in shape and hookup level. There are 85 RV- and trailer-friendly sites at the park's campground, with 15 full-hookup sites and 22 sites with electric hookups, while the remaining sites are standard with no hookups. Campers can choose from an open, grassy site or a shaded site surrounded by towering hemlocks, and there is a dump station, restrooms, and water fountains spread throughout the campground. Private campgrounds around the canyon tend to run larger, with pull-throughs, pools, and small camp stores.
Connectivity is unreliable in the gorge, so downloading offline maps before arrival is recommended, and Wi-Fi at private campgrounds is limited. Wildlife is active, so use provided food storage or your rig's interior. Black bears, deer, and small mammals move through the campgrounds, especially at dawn and dusk.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Wellsboro, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Wellsboro, PA?
RV rental in Wellsboro is surprisingly affordable, especially compared to renting in a big city. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run about $125 to $200, and larger Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 nightly. Because Wellsboro sits right beside the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, weekend rates climb in July, August, and during fall foliage in early October. For a cheap RV rental in Wellsboro, aim for mid-week pickups in late May, June, or after Columbus Day when leaf-peepers head home. Pro tip: book a travel trailer with delivery to your campground and you'll skip fuel costs entirely while keeping the rental rate low.
visittiogapa.com/What kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Wellsboro?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Wellsboro. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, including big Class A motorhomes. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy will verify your ID right inside the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork on pickup day. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club, usually under $20. Most first-time renters are amazed how quickly they're handed the keys and on the road to Leonard Harrison State Park.
dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/default.aspxWhat kind of protection is included with my Wellsboro RV rental?
Every RV rental in Wellsboro booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the back roads of Tioga County with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage tier at checkout, not the host, so you can pick the option that fits your comfort and budget. While the protection plan is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on your Pine Creek Gorge adventure. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully during booking, especially if it is your first time renting an RV, since the higher tiers significantly reduce your out-of-pocket responsibility.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Wellsboro RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, which means it is consistent across every listing in Wellsboro. There is a money-back grace period after you book, and additional refund options depending on how far in advance you cancel. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy will refund you or help you rebook with travel credits. You will see the full cancellation details on the checkout page before you confirm. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later for fall foliage weekends in early October. Inventory disappears fast, and the grace period means you can lock in your rig with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Wellsboro RV trip?
Absolutely, Wellsboro is a fantastic dog town and plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Wellsboro. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see eligible rigs, then message the host to confirm any cleaning fees or size limits before you book. Dogs are welcome on leash at Leonard Harrison State Park, Colton Point State Park, and along most of the 62-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail, one of the best dog-walking trails in Pennsylvania. Hills Creek State Park also has a designated pet swimming area on the lake. Pro tip: pack a long lead and a towel, because Pine Creek's shallow swimming holes near Tiadaghton are dog heaven on a hot July afternoon.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LeonardHarrisonStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Wellsboro?
Yes, RV delivery in Wellsboro is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow the trailer to Leonard Harrison State Park, Colton Point State Park, Ives Run Recreation Area at Hills Creek, or a private campground like Stony Fork, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. You just show up with your groceries and flip-flops. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it and how far they'll travel. Pro tip: delivery is the smart move for couples or families who want the cabin-in-the-woods feel without learning to back up a trailer on day one.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/ColtonPointStatePark/Pages/default.aspxHow far can I drive on a Wellsboro RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got plenty of options, including RV rental with unlimited mileage from select Wellsboro hosts (use the listing filters to find them). Most hosts include a generous daily mileage allowance, typically 100 to 150 miles per day, with a small per-mile fee beyond that. From Wellsboro you're well within range of incredible day trips: the Pine Creek Gorge overlooks are 10 minutes away, Watkins Glen, NY is about 50 miles north, Cherry Springs State Park (a Dark Sky park) is 45 miles east, and Niagara Falls is roughly 200 miles. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Pennsylvania RV trip looping through the Poconos or Pittsburgh, message the host before booking to negotiate a flat mileage package.
visitpa.com/region/pa-wildsWhere are the best campgrounds near Wellsboro for RV camping?
Wellsboro is surrounded by some of Pennsylvania's most scenic RV camping. Leonard Harrison State Park on the east rim of the Pine Creek Gorge has 25 sites with electric hookups and jaw-dropping canyon views. Colton Point State Park on the west rim is more rustic and quieter. Ives Run at Hills Creek State Park (about 15 miles north) offers full-service sites on a swimmable lake. Stony Fork Creek Campground is a private favorite just south of town with full hookups and creek-front sites. For RV camping Wellsboro-style with hot showers and a pool, try Canyon Country Campground on Route 6. Pro tip: state park sites release on a rolling 11-month window, so set a calendar reminder if you want a rim-view spot in October.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/HillsCreekStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time to visit Wellsboro in an RV?
Wellsboro shines from late May through mid-October, with each window offering something different. Late May and June bring mountain laurel blooms (Pennsylvania's state flower), 70s during the day, and cool 50-degree nights perfect for campfires. July and August hit the upper 70s to mid-80s and are prime for swimming in Pine Creek. Late September through the second week of October is the legendary fall foliage season, when the canyon rim turns every shade of red and gold. Winter RV camping near Wellsboro is possible but cold, with January lows in the teens and frequent snow. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September for peak color without the Columbus Day crowds at the Leonard Harrison overlook.
weather.gov/bgm/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting one in Wellsboro?
You'll do great, and Wellsboro is actually one of the friendliest places in Pennsylvania to learn. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and the holding tanks before you leave the driveway. Wellsboro itself has wide streets, low traffic, and Route 6 is a relaxed two-lane highway that's easy for first-timers. If you're nervous about driving, choose a smaller travel trailer with delivery, or a campervan rental in Wellsboro you can park anywhere. You can also message the host through RVezy before booking with any questions. Pro tip: practice a few right turns through downtown Wellsboro's gaslit Main Street before heading out to the canyon, it's a confidence booster.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every motorhome rental in Wellsboro through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also typically a phone call or text away (most are locals who know the back roads of Tioga County better than anyone), and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Cell service can be spotty along Pine Creek Gorge, so if you lose signal, drive a few minutes back toward Wellsboro or Route 6 to call. Pro tip: screenshot your host's number and the roadside assistance line before leaving town, just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Wellsboro?
An RV road trip from Wellsboro is a Northeast bucket-list move. Top routes include: the PA Wilds Loop through Cherry Springs State Park (45 miles, world-class stargazing) and the Elk Country Visitor Center near Benezette (90 miles, wild elk herds); the Finger Lakes Wine Trail starting at Watkins Glen, NY (50 miles); Niagara Falls via Corning Museum of Glass (200 miles); and the Poconos and Delaware Water Gap (180 miles southeast). Cross-border travel into Canada is possible with some hosts, but you'll need to confirm with the host and RVezy in advance; trips to Mexico are not permitted. Pro tip: link Wellsboro and Watkins Glen for a two-state canyon-and-waterfalls weekend that's hard to beat.
visitpa.com/region/pa-wildsWhat should I budget for fuel on a Wellsboro RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger line items, but easy to plan for. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon, and diesel is usually a bit higher. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 miles per gallon, campervans manage 14 to 18, and if you tow a travel trailer with a pickup expect 10 to 13 mpg. From Wellsboro, a weekend loop to the Pine Creek Gorge, Watkins Glen, and back is around 150 miles, so budget roughly $50 to $75 for a motorhome. Fill up in Wellsboro or Mansfield before heading deeper into the PA Wilds, where stations are sparse. Pro tip: the Sheetz on Route 6 in Mansfield usually has the best prices in the region.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wellsboro?
Book early and you will thank yourself, especially for the canyon-rim sites. Pennsylvania State Parks (Leonard Harrison, Colton Point, Hills Creek) take reservations through the PA State Parks reservation system on a rolling window, with summer weekends and October dates selling out quickly. Private campgrounds like Stony Fork and Canyon Country Campground typically book 2 to 4 months out for peak weekends. For mid-week stays in June or early September, you can often find sites a week or two ahead. Pro tip: if Leonard Harrison is full, grab Colton Point on the west rim instead, it is quieter, the sunsets are great, and the canyon view is equally stunning.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like in and around Wellsboro?
Driving around Wellsboro is genuinely enjoyable, with light traffic and gorgeous scenery on every road. Route 6 (the main east-west route through town) is a relaxed two-lane designated PA Byway, and Route 287 connects to Mansfield and Interstate 86. Expect steep grades and tight switchbacks descending into Pine Creek Gorge on roads like West Rim Road, so take it slow with a larger RV and use low gear on the way down. In winter (December through March), lake-effect snow and ice are common, and PennDOT recommends winter tires. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk year-round, especially on Route 660 to Leonard Harrison. Pro tip: avoid the gravel sections of West Rim Road with a big motorhome, stick to the paved overlook roads instead.
511pa.com/What amenities and hookups can I expect at Wellsboro-area campgrounds?
You'll find a good mix of options around Wellsboro. Leonard Harrison State Park offers 30-amp electric sites, modern restrooms, hot showers, and a sanitary dump station, but no individual water or sewer hookups. Hills Creek State Park has electric sites with similar amenities plus a swimming beach. Private parks like Canyon Country Campground and Stony Fork Creek offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. The free dump station at Leonard Harrison is open to all PA state park guests, and you can fill fresh water there as well. Pro tip: top off your fresh tank in Wellsboro before heading into Colton Point, since the west rim has only vault toilets and no potable water on site.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LeonardHarrisonStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Wellsboro?
More than you would expect. Most RVs available for rent in Wellsboro come fully equipped: queen or king beds, a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and coffee maker, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, and climate control with both furnace and air conditioning. Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for boondocking nights near Cherry Springs. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the gorge regardless of the rig, since cell coverage drops in the canyon itself. Seatbelt counts vary by RV, so if you are planning a family RV trip in Wellsboro, check the listing for the number of belted seats. Pro tip: filter by number of sleeping spots so you have enough beds for everyone, then message the host to confirm linens are included.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wellsboro%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Wellsboro RV rental?
Hosts in Wellsboro typically offer a great menu of add-ons to make your trip easier. Popular extras include camping chairs and outdoor mats ($10 to $25), bedding and towel packages ($30 to $75), bike racks for the Pine Creek Rail Trail ($15 to $35), generators for off-grid stargazing at Cherry Springs ($25 to $50 per day), kayaks or paddleboards for Hills Creek Lake, and propane fire pits. Pickup and drop-off are usually at the host's home in or near Wellsboro, with delivery available for an extra fee based on distance. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance with overages billed per mile. Pro tip: bundle bedding plus a bike rack, then rent bikes in town if needed, the 62-mile Pine Creek Rail Trail is the highlight of any Tioga County visit.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/PineCreekRailTrail/Pages/default.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Wellsboro RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure on RVezy. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card at booking, with no cash changing hands at pickup. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before the trip (amount varies by RV) and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, usually within a few days of return. To avoid any issues, do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and again at drop-off, document the fuel and tank levels, and return the RV clean with empty holding tanks. Pro tip: review the host's mileage and generator hour policies during booking so there are no surprise charges, that is the most common source of unexpected fees.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Wellsboro in the winter, and is it worth it?
Yes, winter RV rental in Wellsboro is possible and a quietly magical experience if you pick the right rig. Look for listings marked four-season or with heated and enclosed underbellies, and message the host to confirm the furnace, heated tanks, and shore-power setup are ready for active winter use. Daytime highs in January and February average in the upper 20s to mid-30s, with lows in the teens and frequent snow, so you will want a campground with electric hookups (Hills Creek and Canyon Country have partial winter availability, confirm directly before booking). Snowshoeing along the Pine Creek Gorge rim and stargazing at Cherry Springs in crisp winter air are unforgettable. Pro tip: bring extra propane, you will burn through it faster than you expect at 15 degrees.
