Camping near West Hamburg, Pennsylvania
West Hamburg sits in Berks County at the base of Blue Mountain, a stretch of the Kittatinny Ridge that carries the Appalachian Trail across eastern Pennsylvania. The area works as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Reading, Allentown, and Pennsylvania Dutch Country corridor along Interstate 78, with quick access to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and the Schuylkill River valley.
Private RV parks dominate the immediate area. Mountain Springs Camping Rsrt and Blue Rocks Family Campground in Lenhartsville sit closest to town, both tucked against wooded ridges near the AT. Appalachian RV Campground in Shartlesville and Pennsylvania Dutch Campsite extend the options westward toward Lancaster County, while Christmas Pines Campground, LLC rounds out the family-oriented choices.
Most properties here cater to weekend and seasonal RVers rather than transient overnighters, so full-hookup pull-throughs, pools, and organized activities are common. Terrain is rocky in places, a Berks County characteristic, so leveling blocks and a solid site pad matter when choosing a stay.
Things to do around West Hamburg
The Appalachian Trail is the headline attraction. Popular day hikes climb from the Hamburg Reservoir area to the Pinnacle and Pulpit Rock, two of the most photographed overlooks on the Pennsylvania AT. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, a short drive north, is a globally known raptor migration site with its own trail network and visitor center.
For rainy days or family itineraries, Cabela's flagship store in Hamburg, Roadside America in Shartlesville, and Crystal Cave near Kutztown are reliable stops. Cyclists use the Schuylkill River Trail east of town, and Blue Rocks Family Campground features a boulder field known as the River of Rocks, a glacial remnant worth scrambling.
Hershey Park, Reading outlets, and Lancaster's Amish country all sit within roughly an hour by RV or tow vehicle.

Most private campgrounds in the West Hamburg area operate seasonally, typically opening in mid-April and closing in late October or early November. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with holiday weekends and the fall foliage window in early to mid October being the tightest for site availability.
Summer brings warm, humid days in the low 80s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, especially in July and August. It is also the busiest stretch for pool-equipped resorts like Mountain Springs Camping Rsrt and family programming at Christmas Pines Campground, LLC. Fall is the sweet spot for hikers, with cooler temperatures, dry ridgelines along the AT, and hawk migration peaking at Hawk Mountain from mid-September through November.
Winter camping options are limited in the immediate area. Travelers seeking year-round Pennsylvania state park camping generally look to French Creek State Park or other DCNR properties rather than private parks near West Hamburg, which mostly close for the cold months.

Great vehicle and friendly owners. This compact camper has a lot of creature comforts while allowing one to maneuver and park in regular parking lots. The van is really easy to drive and handles really nice. The beds were comfortable and IMO accommodate 2 adults (top bed) and 1 adult or 2 kids in the lower bed. We were able to use the bike rack, too, and that worked great for a road bike and mountain bike (I think 2 mountain bikes might not fit unless the handle bars were turned on 1 of them). We didn't use the, generator, heater, hot water, shower, sink, microwave or toilet so I can't comment on them but I wish we rented it longer so we could've taken advantage of all this van has to offer. We would absolutely rent again.

How to book a campground near West Hamburg
Private campgrounds in this corridor take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Mountain Springs Camping Rsrt, Blue Rocks Family Campground, Appalachian RV Campground, Christmas Pines Campground, LLC, and Pennsylvania Dutch Campsite each manage their own booking calendars, and holiday weekends often require multi-night minimums booked months in advance.
For nearby state park camping, reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance for most Pennsylvania state park overnight stays through the DCNR reservation portal. National forest and Appalachian Trail shelter camping is generally first-come, first-served and not suited to RVs.
RV renters should confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and any age or pet restrictions before locking in a reservation, since older Berks County parks vary in site size.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near West Hamburg are wooded, hilly, and often stony. Expect narrow interior roads at older parks, tight tree canopy that can complicate slide-outs and satellite reception, and gravel or grass pads rather than concrete. Campers with larger rigs should verify site dimensions at booking, as some sites are rocky and on a grade that makes leveling difficult.
Cell service is generally usable along the I-78 corridor but drops quickly on the ridges. Bears, deer, and raccoons are all present, so food storage matters, and biting insects peak in June and July.
Grocery and fuel runs are easiest in Hamburg proper or at the truck stops along I-78 at Shartlesville and Krumsville. Propane refills are widely available at the larger campgrounds and at Cabela's.
