Camping near West Hazleton, Pennsylvania
West Hazleton sits in the ridge-and-valley country of Luzerne County in northeastern Pennsylvania, at the southern edge of the Pocono Mountains region. The area is served by I-80 and I-81, which put a cluster of private campgrounds and two major Pennsylvania state parks within an easy RV drive.
Closest to town, Moyers Grove Campground in Wapwallopen spans more than 70 acres with over 150 sites that can accommodate trailers up to 40 feet. Lakewood Park Campground in Barnesville is a family campground on a lakeside property, offering tent sites, full-hookup RV sites and multiple cabin styles. Council Cup Campground is a 400-acre seasonal campground open from April through November, with sites for tent camping, RV camping, and cabin rentals, plus teepees and themed log cabins.
For a smaller stop, Bodnarosa Campground sits on wooded land near the Susquehanna River corridor with full hookup sites. Red Ridge Lake Campgrounds rounds out the local options for renters looking to stay closer to the Hazleton area.
Things to do around West Hazleton
The Pocono foothills and the Susquehanna River corridor put a lot of outdoor recreation within an hour of camp. The 15,990-acre Hickory Run State Park in Carbon County lies in the western foothills of the Pocono Mountains and contains Boulder Field, a striking boulder-strewn area that is a National Natural Landmark. During the summer months, swimming is available at Sand Spring Lake at one designated sand-beach swimming area, open from late May to mid-September.
Closer in, Nescopeck State Park covers 3,550 acres in Luzerne County, with Nescopeck Creek running through the valley and roughly 19 miles of trails through forests, meadows, and wetlands.
On-site amenities help fill downtime. Moyers Grove offers a solar-heated in-ground swimming pool, catch-and-release fishing in ponds and a stream, plus basketball, beach volleyball, horseshoes and shuffleboard. Council Cup features nature trails, Susquehanna River overlooks, a 25-foot waterfall, volleyball, horseshoes, badminton, and mini golf.

The camping window in this part of Pennsylvania is shaped by elevation and lake-effect weather. Summers are warm and wet, winters are freezing and snowy, and skies are partly cloudy year round. Most private parks near West Hazleton open in April and run into late fall, then close for the winter.
Summer is the busiest stretch. State-park sites in the Poconos region book far ahead, and October is peak foliage season in Pennsylvania's mountains. Campgrounds in the Pocono and Laurel Highlands regions fill up for every October weekend, so it pays to book close to the 11-month window for fall color camping. Hickory Run experiences high visitation from spring through fall.
Shoulder seasons trade crowds for cooler nights. Spring brings the heaviest rainfall of the year and muddy trails, while late fall shifts to hard frosts and early snow. Winter camping options are limited in this area: Council Cup runs April through November, and other nearby private parks follow a similar seasonal schedule, so cold-weather campers should confirm dates directly with the operator.

This was our family’s first time renting an RV after years of tent camping, and it was a great experience overall. Michael was an excellent host. He delivered the RV to our campsite, had everything set up and ready to go, and took the time to explain how everything worked. As first-time RV renters, that made the experience stress-free and much less intimidating. The RV itself was exactly what we needed for our family of four. It was spacious enough to sleep comfortably, kept us cool during the hot weather, kept us dry through the rain, and everything worked as expected. We spent most of our time outdoors and primarily used the RV for sleeping, and it was perfect for that. The only reason I’m mentioning this is so future renters know what to expect. When we first arrived, there was a noticeable odor inside the RV. As the trip went on, it seemed to be coming from the bathroom/holding tank area. When I mentioned it to Michael at pickup, he was very open about it and explained that it’s something he has to deep clean every few rentals to eliminate the smell. I appreciated his honesty, but since it’s a known issue rather than a one-time occurrence, I think it’s fair for future renters to be aware of it. Other than that, we had a fantastic experience. Michael was friendly, responsive, and easy to work with, and I wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again

How to book campsites near West Hazleton
Pennsylvania state parks and private campgrounds use different systems, and renters should plan for both. For DCNR-managed parks like Hickory Run, reservations are made online through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations site or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Most campsites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, up to noon on the day of arrival.
Not every nearby park takes overnight reservations. Nescopeck State Park has no reservable campsites, so it works better as a day-use stop than an overnight base.
Private campgrounds book directly. Moyers Grove, Lakewood Park, Council Cup and Bodnarosa each accept reservations by phone or through their websites, with cabins and full-hookup pull-throughs going first on summer and holiday weekends. Book early for Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Halloween-themed event weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of old-school family campgrounds and newer, full-service parks rather than resort-style destinations. Sites tend to be wooded, and cell coverage can be spotty. Moyers Grove has no cable or WiFi, cellphone service is limited to Verizon, AT&T, and StraightTalk, and sites accommodate campers up to 40 feet long.
Hookup quality varies by park. Moyers Grove offers full-hookup campsites with 20, 30, and 50 amp electric connections. Council Cup has water, electric, and sewer sites with 30 and 50 amp hookups, plus tent areas along its streams, a laundromat, camp store, and Wi-Fi.
Families should plan for lake or pool time, planned weekend activities, and themed events. Bring bug spray for wooded sites near creeks, a water filter or extra jugs if staying at rustic sections, and layers for cool mountain nights even in mid-summer.

The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV and provides financial protection during your trip. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my West Hazleton RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk. If a winter storm or other natural disaster impacts your Pocono trip, RVezy's support team can help review your options. The exact refund depends on how far out you cancel and the trip circumstances, so review the current policy on the RVezy Help Center before booking. Pro tip: book early to secure summer Hickory Run dates, since you have flexibility built in from the start.

Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in West Hazleton are just a filter click away. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and message the host to confirm any pet fees, then plan around dog-welcoming campgrounds in the area. Hickory Run State Park (about 20 miles east) welcomes leashed pets in designated camping loops, and Tuscarora State Park southwest of town also welcomes leashed dogs in posted areas. Pro tip: pack a long tie-out, your pup's vaccination records, and a cooling mat for July humidity. Many Hickory Run trails are open to leashed dogs, making a West Hazleton RV trip a tail-wagging win.

Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination to see who delivers there. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so picking a campground within 30 miles of West Hazleton keeps costs low. Pro tip: ask about a pickup-included setup so you don't have to break camp at the end.

Each RVezy listing shows the host's mileage policy clearly: some include a generous daily allotment, others offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, and many will add miles for a small per-mile fee. Pro tip: if you're planning a big loop, message the host before booking and ask for a mileage package that fits your route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Hazleton%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhere are the best campgrounds near West Hazleton for an RV?

For RV camping in West Hazleton-area state parks, reserve through the Pennsylvania DCNR system up to 11 months in advance. pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/hickory-run-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in West Hazleton?
Late spring through mid-October is prime time for an RV rental in West Hazleton, PA. July is the warmest month with average highs near 82°F and lows around 60°F, perfect for swimming at Sand Spring Lake inside Hickory Run State Park. September and early October bring crisp 60s to 70s days and spectacular Pocono fall foliage, one of the best leaf-peeping windows in the Northeast. Winters are cold (January averages around 32°F highs and 17°F lows with significant snowfall), so most private campgrounds close by late October. Pro tip: book a Hickory Run site for the third weekend of September to catch peak color with smaller crowds than summer holidays.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in West Hazleton?
You'll be fine, and you'll have help every step of the way. First time renting an RV near West Hazleton? Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup that covers the propane system, water tanks, slide-outs, leveling, generator, and dump procedures, so you're never guessing. If highway driving makes you nervous, choose a Class B campervan or small travel trailer for your first trip, both handle local roads like PA Route 309 and US 22 easily. Even better: pick a host who offers delivery to your campground so the toughest driving is already done. Pro tip: practice a quick reverse and turn in a large parking lot in West Hazleton before heading to Hickory Run.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002337993-Renting-an-RVWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my West Hazleton RV trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy rental in West Hazleton comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with your protection plan, so a flat tire on Interstate 81, a dead battery at Tuscarora State Park, or a tow off a tight Pocono back road is handled with one phone call. Your host is typically just a text away for quick questions like how to relight the water heater or where the breaker is, and RVezy's customer support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone and snap a photo of your RV's VIN plate at pickup so you're ready if anything happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my West Hazleton RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is normal for an RV road trip from West Hazleton. Popular routes head into New York (Catskills, Finger Lakes), New Jersey (Delaware Water Gap), Maryland (Assateague), and Virginia (Shenandoah), all standard territory for RVezy hosts. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection plan, so message the host before booking and confirm it in writing through the RVezy chat. One important note: trips into Mexico are not permitted because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: from West Hazleton, a classic 7-day loop is Hickory Run, the Catskills, then the Finger Lakes, all under 400 miles of driving.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a West Hazleton RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for. Class C motorhomes in the Hazleton area average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, and tow setups depend on your truck. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a touch above the national average, and you'll find plenty of large-vehicle-friendly stations along Interstate 81 and US Route 309 around West Hazleton (Pilot, Flying J, and Sheetz all welcome big rigs). For a 4-day RV camping trip near West Hazleton with 400 miles of driving in a Class C, budget roughly $175 to $225 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in town before climbing into the Poconos, where prices often rise.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near West Hazleton?
Earlier is always better, but you have flexibility. Pennsylvania state parks like Hickory Run, Tuscarora, and Locust Lake open reservations up to 11 months in advance through the DCNR reservation system, and summer weekends plus October foliage weeks fill fast. Private campgrounds near West Hazleton, such as Moyers Grove and Lakewood Park, typically take bookings 3 to 6 months out and are easier to grab last-minute midweek. Reservations at most state park sites must be made at least a few days ahead. Pro tip: if your dream site is sold out, set a cancellation alert through a service like Campnab, since plans change constantly and openings pop up.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/hickory-run-state-parkWhat are driving conditions like around West Hazleton?
Driving an RV around West Hazleton is very manageable once you know the local quirks. The area sits at roughly 1,700 feet of elevation in the Appalachian foothills, so expect some moderate grades on roads heading toward Jim Thorpe (PA-93, PA-309) and on access roads to area campgrounds. Interstate 81 and Interstate 80 meet just north of town and are excellent RV corridors. Winters bring snow and ice from November through March, so most RV travel happens April through October. Pro tip: take it slow on the winding stretch of PA-93 south of town in heavy rain, and use lower gears descending into Jim Thorpe to spare your brakes on a heavier motorhome.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near West Hazleton?
Most campgrounds near West Hazleton are well equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Hickory Run State Park offers electric campsites, a sanitary dump station, hot showers, flush toilets, and a camp store with firewood and ice during the main camping season (typically mid-April through mid-October). Private parks like Moyers Grove and Lakewood Park typically offer full hookups, laundry, Wi-Fi, and pools. Potable water fills are easy to find at park entrances. Pro tip: at Hickory Run, you're in active bear country, so store food and any scented items inside the RV (not in outside compartments) every night.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/hickory-run-state-parkWhat features and amenities come with a typical West Hazleton RV rental?
Expect a comfortable home on wheels. Most motorhome rentals in West Hazleton sleep 4 to 8 people with a queen bed, convertible dinette, and bunk or overcab options, plus a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave), a bathroom with shower, air conditioning, furnace, and an onboard generator. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor awning, and some have Wi-Fi boosters (a great add-on since Pocono cell service can be patchy). All seated passengers need seatbelts while driving. Pro tip: when comparing campervan rental West Hazleton options against larger Class C motorhomes, think about how much standing-up space you'll want for those rainy Hickory Run afternoons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Hazleton%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my RVezy West Hazleton rental?
Lots of helpful extras are available to make your trip easier. Common add-ons from West Hazleton hosts include linen and kitchen packages, bike racks, generators, camp chairs and tables, propane refills, and pet fees if you're bringing a dog. Delivery and setup is one of the most popular options, with hosts towing the RV to Hickory Run, Tuscarora, or your driveway and walking you through everything on arrival. Pickup and drop-off times are set by the host and shown on the listing. Each listing also clearly states the mileage policy (daily allotment plus per-mile rate, or unlimited), so there are no surprises. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen pack and your trip is truly turnkey.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Hazleton%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in West Hazleton?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform. You pay your trip total (nightly rate, fees, taxes, and any chosen add-ons) by credit card at booking, with no cash changing hands at pickup. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before your trip starts, and it's released back to you after drop-off, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition it left. To avoid issues, do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and again at return, keep receipts for any propane or fuel fills if required by the host, and dump tanks before bringing it back. Pro tip: message the host the day before pickup to confirm timing for a smooth handoff.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in West Hazleton during winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals near West Hazleton are possible and can be a magical Pocono experience. Tuscarora State Park offers year-round camping access, and Hickory Run has limited cold-weather camping into late fall. Hazleton winters are genuinely cold (January averages around 32°F highs and 17°F lows with significant snowfall), so look for listings that mention heated holding tanks, a working furnace, and a 30-amp shore-power capable site to keep everything flowing. Many hosts winterize from January through March, so message before booking to confirm availability. Pro tip: pair a winter RV road trip from West Hazleton with snow tubing at Big Boulder or a quiet weekend near Tuscarora Lake (bundle up and bring extra propane).
