Campgrounds and RV parks near Tiverton, RI

Tiverton is built around water and open space. Fort Barton is a town-managed site with Revolutionary War earthworks, an observation tower reached by a short climb, and a network of walking trails through mixed woodland. The Audubon Emilie Ruecker Wildlife Refuge is a small nature area along the Sakonnet River with easy trails through woods, salt marshes, and red maple swamps, with chances to spot osprey, egrets, and harbor seals. Weetamoo Woods is a wooded preserve with several trails and the remains of the 18th-century Borden Sawmill. Families staying at Horseneck Beach have direct beach access, while Massasoit State Park adds swimming, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking and fishing. Newport, with its mansions and harbor, is a short drive south across the Sakonnet River Bridge.

Camping in this area is a seasonal activity. Horseneck Beach State Reservation operates from the first week of May through Columbus Day, with reservations available through the Massachusetts DCR camping system on ReserveAmerica. Massasoit State Park is typically seasonal, with most camping facilities open from late spring to early fall, and Canoe River Campground runs its own private season, generally spring through mid-fall. Meadowlark RV Park in Middletown operates year-round, which makes it one of the few shoulder-season options in the immediate area. Summer is peak season. Coastal state campgrounds fill quickly for weekends and holidays, and it is advisable to book well in advance. Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and easier reservations, though ocean water stays cold into June. Winters are cold and often snowy along Narragansett Bay, and most state-park campgrounds are closed. Travelers visiting between November and April should confirm hookups, gate access, and dump-station availability before arrival.

Coastal campgrounds in this area are exposed. At Horseneck Beach, sites sit behind the dunes with little tree cover, so wind off the water is a constant companion, cool nights are common even in summer, and the lack of shade makes afternoon heat a real factor on paved back-in sites. Sites are arranged along one-way roads, and the campground accommodates RVs up to about 42 feet, with electric hookups available on part of the loop and no in-site water or sewer. Inland parks feel very different. At Massasoit, Loops C and D offer more private, wooded spots under taller pines with better natural separation between sites. Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground; firewood must be purchased on site. Pets are generally allowed on leash with proof of rabies vaccination, and quiet hours are enforced.
