Campgrounds near Asherton
Asherton sits in Dimmit County in the South Texas brush country, along US-83 between Carrizo Springs and Catarina. The area has a predominantly warm and humid climate with hot summers and mild winters, and summer highs commonly reach the mid-90s to 100s Fahrenheit while winters stay around 50 to 60°F. The landscape is flat mesquite and prickly-pear country, and RV travel here is dominated by pull-through parks off US-83 and I-35 rather than public parks.
The closest options to town are SB- RV Park and Brush Country RV Park, both small parks near Asherton itself. Triple R Resort RV Park is a larger destination park on the Nueces River near Crystal City, and Cotulla / Nueces River KOA Journey is the main I-35 stopover to the northeast. Lone Star RV Park adds another in-town option.
Travelers using Asherton as a base typically combine an RV park stay with day trips to Chaparral Wildlife Management Area, the Nueces River, or Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino near Eagle Pass.
Things to do near Asherton
The main outdoor draw is Chaparral Wildlife Management Area, a 15,200-acre stretch of South Texas brush country in La Salle and Dimmit Counties that serves as a research and demonstration area for the Rio Grande Plains ecological region. It features a wheelchair-accessible half-mile nature trail called Arena Rojo that circles the headquarters office, a self-guided driving trail, and a primitive campground, with public hunts held annually by permit for dove, quail, deer, feral hogs, javelina, and coyotes.
On the Nueces River, Triple R Resort RV Park offers fishing for bass, catfish, and perch from shaded riverbank sites. Birders in the area come for green jays, painted buntings, pyrrhuloxia, and pauraques, and the ranch and river settings around Crystal City are known for diverse South Texas bird life.

The main window for general public access at nearby wildlife areas is spring and summer. Chaparral WMA is open for general public use uninterrupted from April 1 through August 31 each spring and summer, with additional dates set by the area manager, and campsites are first-come, first-served. The WMA is otherwise closed to the general public outside of scheduled public hunts.
Winter is the busiest RV season locally, driven by Winter Texans and oilfield traffic on US-83 and I-35. Private parks near Asherton stay open year-round, so extended stays are common from November through March.
Summer is hot and quiet for tourism, with temperatures at Chaparral WMA regularly climbing above 100°F by August. Average annual rainfall for the area is about 21 inches, with most of the precipitation occurring during late summer and early fall. September tends to be the wettest month, and travelers should watch for flash-flooding on low-water crossings.
Booking a campground near Asherton
Private parks around Asherton generally take reservations by phone or through their own websites. SB- RV Park, Brush Country RV Park, and Lone Star RV Park are small and often accept walk-ins outside of peak Winter Texan months, but calling ahead is recommended for holiday weekends and hunting-season windows. Triple R Resort RV Park handles reservations directly, and Cotulla / Nueces River KOA Journey books through the KOA reservation system.
For Chaparral WMA, the rules are different. A Limited Public Use Permit or an Annual Public Hunting Permit is required, permits can be purchased online through TPWD, in person at license dealers, or by phone, and WMAs do not require advance reservations, unlike Texas state park campsites which must be booked online.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a working South Texas landscape: ranchland, oilfield service traffic, mesquite thorns, and long straight highways. Cell coverage is generally fine on US-83 and I-35 but drops off on farm-to-market roads west of town. Groceries and fuel are limited in Asherton itself, with a larger selection of stores and restaurants roughly 10 miles away in Carrizo Springs.
Sites at local parks are mostly gravel or dirt pull-throughs with 30 and 50 amp service, full hookups, and few trees. Triple R Resort RV Park has 176 sites with fresh drinking water and full hook-ups on 50/30/20 amp service and fire pits, plus rustic cabins along the river. Bring sun shades, insect repellent, and closed shoes for brush walking.
Wildlife is close. Javelina, deer, coyotes, feral hogs, and rattlesnakes are all common, so keep pets leashed and food secured.
