Campgrounds and RV parks near Bishop, TX

The main draws are coastal. Padre Island National Seashore protects roughly seventy miles of undeveloped Gulf beach south of Corpus Christi, with driving access to North Beach and South Beach, the Malaquite area, and Bird Island Basin on the Laguna Madre side for kayaking, windsurfing, and fishing. Mustang Island State Park, off SH 361 near Port Aransas, offers five miles of beach, more than 20 miles of paddling trail segments on the bay side, and strong spring and fall birding. Inland, the King Ranch in Kingsville runs guided tours and nature drives, and Baffin Bay is a well-known trophy speckled trout fishery. Corpus Christi adds the USS Lexington, the Texas State Aquarium, and downtown bayfront parks. Sea turtle hatchling releases at Padre Island take place during the summer nesting season, weather permitting.

The Coastal Bend has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and long, hot, muggy summers. Winter is the most comfortable stretch for RV travel: daytime highs are usually in the upper 60s Fahrenheit, hard freezes are rare, and rainfall is at its lowest in January and February. This is also the Winter Texan season, so private parks around Corpus Christi and Kingsville take long-term monthly stays from roughly October through March, and weekly availability tightens. Spring brings warming temperatures, strong onshore winds, and peak migration birding along the barrier islands. Late spring through early summer sees thunderstorms, especially in May and June. Summer is hot and humid with frequent afternoon highs in the low 90s, and Gulf water is warm enough for swimming from late spring into October. Fall is the wettest season and overlaps with Atlantic hurricane activity, which peaks from August into October. Storms can force closures of Padre Island National Seashore beaches and coastal state parks, sometimes on short notice.

Expect flat coastal terrain, open sky, and steady wind off the Gulf. Most private parks around Bishop are level, full-hookup, gravel or grass sites geared to long-stay snowbirds, with limited shade and modest amenity buildings. Cell coverage along Highway 77 is generally strong. On the barrier islands, sites at Mustang Island State Park include water and electric loops plus primitive sites, with restrooms and showers near the developed campground. Padre Island National Seashore is more rustic: Malaquite has paved and gravel sites, restrooms, cold-water showers, and potable water plus a nearby dump station, but no site hookups, and beach camping is on hard-packed sand with no facilities. Mosquitoes and biting flies can be heavy after rain, and salt air is hard on exterior fittings.
