Campgrounds and RV parks near Brackettville, TX

Kickapoo Cavern State Park is the headline attraction. Guided cave tours run every Saturday at 1 p.m. by reservation, exploring a cavern about 1,400 feet long formed over roughly 4 million years. Stuart Bat Cave hosts thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats from mid-March to the end of October, and evening bat flights can be observed at sunset on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights during that window, with daybreak return flights on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The park also offers hiking and mountain biking, geocaching, and birding, with over 240 species recorded and the Armadillo Lookout Trail leading to a panoramic overlook. On the Nueces River, Chalk Bluff River Resort and Park draws families for swimming, tubing, kayaking, and fishing along a long stretch of riverfront. Del Rio adds Amistad Reservoir boating and Seminole Canyon rock-art sites within a short drive.

Spring and fall are the peak windows for RV travel here. Daytime highs are comfortable, wildflowers bloom in March and April, and river levels on the Nueces are generally suitable for paddling. Spring is also the wettest stretch, with thunderstorms most common from April into June, so travelers should check flood advisories before camping near creeks. Summers are hot. Kickapoo Cavern reports a July average high of 95 degrees and average rainfall around 18 inches, and afternoon temperatures often push into the upper 90s. Shade is limited at some private RV parks, so air-conditioned rigs and awnings matter. Burn bans are common in Kinney County, and at times only charcoal or containerized fuel stoves are allowed for cooking while wood fires are prohibited. Winters are mild and dry, with occasional cold fronts. Note Kickapoo Cavern's operating rhythm: the park is closed Tuesday through Thursday, and overnight camping is not available on Monday nights. Prescribed burns may also occur between December and April. Plan arrivals and departures around the Friday-to-Monday window.

Expect a rural, low-density experience. Cell coverage is spotty between Brackettville and Del Rio, and services thin out quickly once travelers leave US-90. Fuel up and stock groceries in Uvalde or Del Rio before heading to remote sites. At Kickapoo Cavern, the campground is small and lightly developed. The park has five full-hookup sites and ten water-only sites, plus a group camp, and it cannot accommodate RVs over 36 feet. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings, and campers must pack out all trash since there is no on-site trash service. Check-in is 2 p.m. and checkout is noon, and generators may not be used between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Private parks along the Nueces and in Del Rio generally offer full hookups, showers, and laundry, which suits longer stays and larger rigs.
