Campgrounds and RV parks near Cotulla, TX

The Nueces River runs along the east side of town and is the main outdoor draw. Bass fishing, bank fishing, and swimming are the typical on-water activities, and the Cotulla / Nueces River KOA Journey offers direct river access on its property. Birding, wildlife viewing, and hiking are best at the Chaparral Wildlife Management Area, which offers the Paisano Driving Trail, the Camino de Fiero Nature Trail, and the wheelchair-accessible Arena Roja trail through native brush country. White-tailed deer, javelina, feral hogs, quail, horned lizards, and painted buntings are common sightings. In town, travelers usually take a break to fuel up, restock groceries, and visit local historical sites. Day trips to San Antonio or south toward Laredo and the border region are both feasible from a Cotulla base.

Cotulla has a hot climate with sweltering summers and short, mild winters. July and August routinely see afternoon highs near or above 100°F, and the South Texas Plains is known for rapid, extreme swings in temperature. RV travelers running air conditioning in mid-summer should confirm that their site has a working 50-amp hookup before booking. Spring and fall are the most comfortable travel windows. March through May brings wildflowers, mild nights, and the wettest month of the year, May, so campers should expect the occasional heavy thunderstorm. Fall from late September into November cools quickly and lines up with dove and deer seasons, which pushes demand at Cotulla-area RV parks well beyond typical tourism traffic. Winter is the peak snowbird and hunting season in South Texas. Days are mild and dry, hard freezes are brief and uncommon, and monthly bookings at private parks tighten significantly from November through February.

Terrain around Cotulla is flat South Texas brush country: mesquite, prickly pear, and blackbrush over sandy soil. Sites at the local RV parks are typically level gravel or caliche pads, and most parks offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service. Natural shade is limited, so awnings and reflective covers help in summer. Interstate 35 noise is a factor at parks close to the freeway, though rows farther from the frontage road are quieter. Cell service on major carriers is generally strong along the I-35 corridor and weaker out on the WMA. Wildlife and insects are part of the experience. Expect mosquitoes near the river after rain, thorny vegetation on trails, and the possibility of snakes in warmer months. Pack sturdy shoes, keep pets leashed, and secure food and trash overnight.
