Camping near Jourdanton, Texas
Jourdanton sits in Atascosa County, about 35 miles south of San Antonio, at the heart of the South Texas brush country. The town is the Atascosa County seat, positioned in the Eagle Ford Shale region with mature South Texas mesquite and open grassy terrain. That location makes it a practical base for RV travelers heading to San Antonio attractions, Choke Canyon Reservoir, or the Gulf Coast.
Campground options in and around Jourdanton lean heavily toward private RV parks with full hookups rather than public campgrounds. Bar M RV Park, Safari Vista RV Park, Hwy 97 E RV Park, and Shady Oaks RV Park serve travelers looking for standard pull-through and back-in sites. Freedom RV Resort operates as a clothing-optional (nudist) park, so families should note that distinction when booking.
For traditional state-park camping, the closest major public option is Choke Canyon State Park, with its South Shore Unit located about 3.5 miles west of Three Rivers on Highway 72. The reservoir was built on the Frio River to supply water to Corpus Christi and covers roughly 26,000 surface acres, offering a quieter, lake-based alternative to the private parks clustered around Jourdanton and Pleasanton.
Things to do around Jourdanton
San Antonio is the biggest draw within an hour's drive. The River Walk, the Alamo, and the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park all sit within easy reach, and rangers lead tours at the mission sites for families wanting a lower-key day out.
Closer to town, the Atascosa River Park in neighboring Pleasanton has grassy fields, playground equipment, and picnic areas that work well for burning off kid energy between drive days. Golfers can play the course at Pleasanton Country Club.
For water and wildlife, head south to Choke Canyon State Park. The reservoir supports fishing, birding, and paddling, and the park lies within the westernmost range of the American alligator, so shoreline caution is required. Corpus Christi and its beaches sit roughly two hours southeast for a longer day trip.

South Texas is a shoulder-season destination for RV travel. Summers around Jourdanton are sweltering and muggy, winters are short and cool, and skies are partly cloudy year round. October through April is the most comfortable stretch for camping, with mild days and cool nights that suit RV air conditioning capacity.
Spring brings the year's heaviest rainfall. May is the wettest month, averaging about 107 mm of precipitation across roughly 8 rainy days. Wildflowers bloom in March and April, and Texas State Parks reports that its busy season spans spring, summer, and fall.
Summer temperatures are the main planning constraint. Daytime highs in August average around 37 C (99 F) and drop to about 23 C (73 F) at night, making it the hottest month of the year. RVers traveling June through September should confirm 30- or 50-amp service and expect heavy A/C loads. Winter brings occasional cold fronts but very little freezing weather, and snowbird traffic picks up from November onward.
Booking a campsite
Private RV parks around Jourdanton, including Bar M RV Park, Safari Vista RV Park, Hwy 97 E RV Park, Shady Oaks RV Park, and Freedom RV Resort, generally take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Weekly and monthly rates are common in this area given the Eagle Ford Shale workforce, so weekend availability can tighten around industry activity rather than tourism cycles.
For Choke Canyon State Park and other Texas State Parks, book through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reservation system. Texas uses one of the shortest booking windows of any major state park system, with reservations opening on a rolling basis five months before the arrival date at 8:00 AM Central Time. Group facilities and some special-use sites must be reserved by phone. A separate day-use entrance fee applies on top of camping fees unless the party holds a Texas State Parks Pass.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Jourdanton is flat to gently rolling, covered in mesquite, black brush, and cacti typical of South Texas. Sites at the private RV parks are generally level with gravel or grass pads, full hookups, and mature shade trees at the older properties. Cell coverage is reliable on the major highways, and Wi-Fi quality varies by park, so travelers who work on the road should confirm bandwidth directly with the operator.
Wildlife to expect includes white-tailed deer, javelina, and a heavy bird population, especially in migration windows. Alligators are present at Choke Canyon and shoreline caution is required; feeding or harassing wildlife is prohibited.
Freedom RV Resort is a clothing-optional property and is not appropriate for families with children. The other listed parks are standard RV parks. Grocery, fuel, and hardware are all available in Jourdanton and Pleasanton, with big-box shopping a short drive north toward San Antonio.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Jourdanton, TX?
RV rental in Jourdanton is one of the more affordable ways to explore South Texas. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Jourdanton area typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from about $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs run roughly $250 to $425 per night. Many Atascosa County hosts knock 10 to 20% off bookings of 5 or more nights, so stretching your trip can actually lower your nightly cost.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Jourdanton%2C%20TexasWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Jourdanton?
Great news for first-timers: a regular Texas (or any U.S. state) driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Jourdanton. No CDL, no special RV endorsement, and no test required, even for a 32-foot Class C motorhome. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during checkout, so there's no paperwork to print or notarize. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (available from your local auto club for around $20). Most renters are surprised how quick the verification step is, you can often finish it in under five minutes from your phone.
txdmv.gov/motoristsIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Jourdanton RV rental?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Jourdanton automatically includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), with multiple tiers so you can match coverage to your comfort. If you get a flat on US-281 or a dead battery at a campground outside Pleasanton, one call gets help dispatched any time, day or night. That built-in safety net is a big reason first-time renters feel confident booking an RV rental in Jourdanton.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and refund amounts depend on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. You will see the exact terms during checkout and in your RVezy account, and customer support is available before, during, and after your trip if plans shift. Hurricane season in South Texas runs June through November, so locking in your Jourdanton RV trip early helps you secure the best rigs while keeping flexibility through the platform's standard cancellation terms.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on my Jourdanton RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Jourdanton is easy to find. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see plenty of Atascosa County hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Many waive any pet fee for one well-behaved pup, while others charge a small cleaning add-on. Once you're rolling, your dog will love the wide open spaces: Choke Canyon State Park, about 35 minutes south, allows leashed pets on trails and at the swim beach, and the trails around Pleasanton River Park are shaded and dog-friendly year round. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, South Texas heat is no joke even in spring.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/choke-canyonCan the RV be delivered to my campground or address in Jourdanton?
Yes, RV delivery in Jourdanton is a popular option and a game-changer for first-timers. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to your campsite at Choke Canyon State Park, a private RV park, or a family property outside Poteet or Pleasanton, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location. Use the Delivery filter when browsing listings, and message the host with your exact destination for an upfront quote. It's the easiest way to enjoy a motorhome rental in Jourdanton without ever driving it yourself.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039559014-RV-deliveryHow does mileage work, and can I get RV rental with unlimited mileage?
Mileage is flexible. Hosts set their own daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day in the Jourdanton area), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect if you're planning a big South Texas loop. To put it in perspective, San Antonio is about 40 miles north, Corpus Christi is roughly 100 miles southeast, and Big Bend National Park is around 400 miles west. For a long RV road trip from Jourdanton, filter for unlimited mileage listings or message the host to negotiate a higher cap upfront, it's almost always cheaper than paying overage fees later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106054-Understanding-mileage-and-generator-usageWhere are the best campgrounds near Jourdanton, TX?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Jourdanton include Choke Canyon State Park (Calliham Unit), about 35 miles south, with full-hookup sites near the lake and excellent bass fishing; Hidden Valley RV Park in Von Ormy, about 30 minutes north on the way to San Antonio; and Lake Corpus Christi State Park, about 70 miles southeast, with water-view sites and a swim beach. For RV camping in Jourdanton itself, you'll also find smaller private parks along US-281. Book Texas State Parks through the official reservation system up to five months in advance, weekends sell out fast.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/choke-canyonWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Jourdanton?
The sweet spot is mid-October through mid-April, when daytime highs sit in the 65-82°F range and nights cool to the 40s-60s, ideal for campfires and hiking. March and November are especially gorgeous, with wildflowers along the back roads and zero mosquitoes. Summers in Jourdanton are seriously hot, with average July-August highs around 96-98°F and heat index values that can push past 110°F, so if you're traveling June through September, prioritize RVs with strong A/C and plan outdoor activities for early morning. The Atascosa County Live Stock Show in January and the Poteet Strawberry Festival in early April are huge local draws, book your rig 2-3 months ahead for those dates.
weather.gov/ewx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You've got this, and Jourdanton is honestly one of the easiest places in Texas to learn. The roads around Atascosa County are flat, wide, and lightly trafficked, especially compared to driving through downtown San Antonio. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the propane, slide-outs, leveling, dumping, water hookups, and driving tips before you leave. You can also message your host any time during your trip if a question pops up. First time renting an RV? Start with a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer, take your first 30 minutes on the quiet stretch of FM-3006 to get comfortable with the mirrors, and you'll be cruising confidently by lunch.
txdmv.gov/motorists/driver-education-and-safetyWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues, just one phone number, any time. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about how the RV works, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Jourdanton sits at the intersection of US-281 and SH-97, so help can reach most spots in Atascosa County within an hour, and major service centers in San Antonio are just 40 miles north. That layered support is exactly why so many travelers feel safe taking their first RV road trip from Jourdanton.
dps.texas.gov/section/highway-patrolWhat are the best road trip destinations from Jourdanton?
Jourdanton's location makes it a perfect launch pad for an RV road trip. Popular destinations include San Antonio and the River Walk (about 40 miles, under an hour), Corpus Christi and Padre Island National Seashore (about 145 miles, around 2.5 hours) for beach camping on the Gulf, Garner State Park on the Frio River (about 120 miles, 2 hours) for tubing and limestone bluffs, Big Bend National Park (around 400 miles, 6 to 7 hours) for desert landscapes and dark skies, and Austin (about 120 miles, 2 hours) for live music. Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but Texas alone offers more than enough adventure to fill a two-week loop.
nps.gov/bibe/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Jourdanton RV trip?
Fuel is one of the more predictable costs. Texas gas prices typically run below the national average, often $2.80-$3.20 per gallon around Jourdanton, with stations clustered along US-281 and SH-97. Plan on roughly 8-10 MPG for a Class A, 10-14 MPG for a Class C, 18-22 MPG for a campervan rental in Jourdanton, and 12-16 MPG for a truck towing a travel trailer. For a 4-night loop covering 400 miles, budget around $100-$160 in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: fill up in Pleasanton or Jourdanton before heading west toward Uvalde or south toward Choke Canyon, prices climb noticeably once you leave the I-37 corridor.
comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/fuels/How far in advance should I book a campground?
Earlier is better, especially for Texas State Parks. Choke Canyon and Lake Corpus Christi State Park open reservations five months ahead through the official Texas Parks and Wildlife site, and prime weekends (March-May and October-November) often fill within hours of opening. For private RV parks around Jourdanton, 3-4 weeks ahead is usually plenty outside of festival weekends. If you're visiting during the Poteet Strawberry Festival in early April or hunting season in November, book at least 8-10 weeks out. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday-Wednesday) almost always have availability, and many private parks offer 10-15% midweek discounts, an easy way to score a great site on short notice.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Jourdanton?
Easy and forgiving, which is one of the best things about an RV trip from Jourdanton. Roads are flat with gentle terrain, low traffic outside of San Antonio's I-410 loop, and minimal mountain grades. The main routes (US-281, SH-16, SH-97, and I-37) are wide, well-maintained, and RV-friendly. Watch for two things: sudden afternoon thunderstorms from May to September that can drop visibility fast, and white-tail deer at dawn and dusk along county roads, Atascosa County has a high deer population. Avoid driving across South Texas during high-wind advisories (gusts over 30 mph make tall rigs squirrelly). Otherwise, this is genuinely one of the easiest regions in the state to drive an RV.
drivetexas.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Jourdanton offer?
Most parks deliver everything you need. Choke Canyon and Lake Corpus Christi State Park offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer) at many sites, hot showers, restrooms, dump stations, and potable water fill-ups. Private parks around Pleasanton and Jourdanton typically include Wi-Fi, laundry, and propane refills. For dumping or filling water mid-trip, the Choke Canyon Calliham Unit dump station is free for registered campers, and several truck stops along I-37 (Three Rivers exit) offer paid dump access for around $10-$15. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving any state park, the next reliable fill point heading west on US-90 can be 60+ miles away.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/choke-canyon/fees-facilities/facilitiesWhat's typically included inside an RVezy rental in Jourdanton?
You'll be impressed by how move-in-ready these rigs are. Most Jourdanton RV rentals come fully equipped: a queen or king bed, additional sleeping for 4-8 people, a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning (essential in South Texas), heat, a dinette, and seatbelts for safe travel. Many include a generator for boondocking, a TV/DVD, outdoor speakers, and a power awning. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include a hotspot, others rely on cell signal, which is strong in Atascosa County but spotty near Choke Canyon's south shore. Check each listing's amenities list, and message the host if a specific item (like a coffee maker or pack-n-play) is a must-have.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons can I get with my RV rental?
Lots of useful extras are available to customize your trip. Common add-ons from Jourdanton hosts include linen and towel packages ($30-$60), kitchen kits, generators ($20-$40/day), portable grills, outdoor chairs and tables, bike racks, kayaks, fishing gear (handy for Choke Canyon), and even pre-stocked groceries. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, hosts will bring the RV to your campsite, level it, and walk you through everything. Pickup is typically between 1-4 PM and dropoff by 11 AM, but many hosts offer flexible times if you message ahead. Pro tip: bundling delivery + linens + a generator from one host is usually cheaper than buying piecemeal, and saves a ton of packing time.
tdlr.texas.gov/How do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at booking, no cash is exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after a clean return, separate from your booking payment. To avoid issues, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks (or pay the host's dump fee). Cleaning fees, mileage overages, and add-ons are billed through the platform. Keeping everything inside RVezy means you're fully covered by your selected protection plan and the support team.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle the South Texas summer heat in an RV?
Totally manageable with a little planning. Jourdanton summers average highs in the mid 90s F from June through September, so prioritize RVs with newer rooftop A/C units (many local listings have dual A/Cs, a big plus). Park in shade when possible, use reflective window covers during peak afternoon, and pre-cool the RV by starting the A/C 30 minutes before bedtime. Drive in the morning when temperatures are cooler, blowouts spike in extreme heat. Campgrounds with 50-amp service (like Choke Canyon's premium loops) let you run both A/Cs simultaneously. The shoulder months of late October and March deliver near-perfect 75 to 82 F days and are the smartest-money season for RV camping in Jourdanton.
