Campgrounds and RV parks near Junction, TX

The rivers are the main draw. Tubing, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming are all popular on the South Llano, which is spring-fed and slow-moving. Local outfitters rent tubes and kayaks and run shuttles, and there are multiple put-in and take-out points along the state park's two miles of river frontage. South Llano River State Park has about 22 miles of trails ranging from easy river-bottom walks to steeper back-country routes usable on foot or mountain bike. The park is a designated birding destination with four bird blinds and more than 250 recorded species, and it protects one of the largest wild turkey roosts in Central Texas. After dark, the skies over Kimble County are notably dark, and the state park is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, making stargazing a nightly draw at riverside sites.

Peak camping runs from March through October, when river temperatures are warm enough for swimming and tubing. Spring and early summer bring wildflowers, migrating songbirds, and the busiest weekends at the state park. Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends fill early, and the state park frequently reaches capacity for day use and camping during these periods. Summer is hot, with afternoon highs commonly in the low to mid 90s Fahrenheit. Rivers stay cool because they are spring-fed, but shade and hydration matter. May is the wettest month on average, and thunderstorms can produce fast river rises; the state park gate closes during flooding. Fall cools quickly after mid-October and is one of the more comfortable stretches for hiking. From October 1 through March 31, trails within the Turkey Roost Area are open only between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to protect roosting Rio Grande wild turkeys. Winter nights can drop below freezing, but daytime highs are typically mild.

Junction is a small town, and services are concentrated along Main Street and the I-10 frontage roads: grocery, hardware, propane, fuel, a few restaurants, and RV supplies at some of the private parks. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and along I-10, but weaker in the back country of the state park. Roads into the state park and most private RV parks are paved and suitable for larger rigs, though some interior loops can have tight turns. Sites along the rivers can flood after heavy rain, so check conditions before arrival during wet periods. The state park has 30-amp electric and water hookups with a dump station near the campground, but no individual sewer hookups. Wildlife is common: expect white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, armadillos, and abundant birds around campgrounds. Secure food and trash, and keep pets leashed as required at the state park.
