Campgrounds and RV parks near Lake Medina Shores, TX

When water levels cooperate, Medina Lake is used for fishing, boating, swimming, and paddling. Anglers target largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, white bass, channel and blue catfish, and sunfish, with rocky outcrops and tributary creek beds providing structure. Because lake elevation can drop 40 feet or more with drought, check current levels and ramp accessibility before towing a boat. On land, Hill Country State Natural Area preserves more than 5,300 acres of rugged Bandera County terrain and offers primitive camping, backpacking, nature-watching, and multiuse trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Trails range from easy loops to steep, rocky canyon climbs, and the West Peak Overlook rewards a stiff hike with wide views. Bandera adds dude ranches, tubing and kayaking on the Medina River, rodeos, and live music. San Antonio, including the River Walk and the Alamo, is roughly a 45-minute drive southeast.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of the Hill Country. Daytime highs are mild, nights are cool, and crowds are lighter than during summer holidays. Wildflowers along Hill Country roadsides typically peak from late March through April. Summer is hot, with daytime highs regularly in the mid-90s Fahrenheit and high humidity. Thunderstorms and flash flooding are possible, particularly in May, which is the wettest month of the year in this area, averaging around 100 mm of rainfall. Burn bans are common during dry stretches, and fire-danger conditions can change rapidly, so check local status before your visit. Lake levels are the wild card. Because the reservoir's primary purpose is water storage and agricultural irrigation rather than flood-control operations, elevations can fluctuate substantially during prolonged droughts. The lake has repeatedly dropped below 10 percent of capacity in recent dry years, closing most public boat ramps. Confirm ramp status before arrival if boating matters to the trip. Winter is generally mild, but occasional hard freezes and icy roads do happen.

Expect a working Hill Country landscape rather than a resort strip: limestone hills, cedar and live oak cover, gravel access roads, and long views over the reservoir. Private parks in the area typically offer 30 and 50 amp hookups, dump stations, and a mix of shaded and open sites. Cell service is generally usable but can be spotty in coves and canyons. Wildlife is part of the experience. White-tailed deer, armadillos, wild turkeys, and a wide range of songbirds and raptors are common. At Hill Country State Natural Area, campers must bring firewood since gathering dead wood or cutting standing timber is prohibited, and pets must stay on leashes no longer than six feet. Come prepared for heat, sun, and the possibility of low lake levels. Pack drinking water, sun protection, and shade for summer afternoons.
