Camping near Poteet, Texas
Poteet sits about 30 miles south of downtown San Antonio in Atascosa County, at the northern edge of the South Texas brush country. The town is known as the Strawberry Capital of Texas and holds an annual festival that draws tens of thousands of visitors each April. Its small size, roughly 3,000 residents, means most RV infrastructure is found along the highways connecting Poteet to Pleasanton, Jourdanton, and San Antonio.
The closest options for RV travelers cluster along Highway 16 and Highway 97. Safari Vista RV Park and Hwy 97 E RV Park are among the nearest full-hookup properties, with Bar M RV Park, Shady Oaks RV Park, and Eagle Ford Estate RV Park providing additional pull-through and long-stay capacity that serves both tourists and Eagle Ford Shale oilfield traffic.
For state park camping, the nearest Texas Parks and Wildlife property is Choke Canyon State Park, roughly an hour and a half south near Calliham on the shores of a 26,000-acre reservoir. Poteet itself works as a practical base for exploring San Antonio, the missions, and South Texas ranch country.
Things to do near Poteet
The signature event is the Poteet Strawberry Festival, held every April on the town's festival grounds along Highway 16. The weekend includes a rodeo, carnival rides, live country and Tejano music, a parade, and strawberry-themed food. The festival grounds themselves include an RV area that operates on a first-come, first-served application basis submitted through the festival's website.
Outside festival weekend, day trips from Poteet cover a lot of ground. San Antonio is about 30 minutes north for the River Walk, the Alamo, and the Missions National Historical Park. Choke Canyon State Park offers largemouth bass and catfish fishing, birding along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, and the westernmost range of the American alligator in Texas. Local farms in the Poteet area offer u-pick strawberries in spring.

Poteet has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Spring, particularly late March through early May, is the most popular window: strawberry harvest, comfortable temperatures, and festival weekend all fall in this period. RV parks near Poteet and Pleasanton book heavily around the April festival, and the on-site RV area at the festival grounds fills on a first-come basis.
Summer is hot. Afternoon highs routinely climb into the mid-90s Fahrenheit, and July and August often bring stretches above 100. RV sites remain available, but shaded pull-throughs and functioning air conditioning become priorities. Thunderstorms are possible, and the broader Gulf hurricane season runs June through November, occasionally sending rain bands inland.
Fall shoulder season, from late September through November, brings cooler nights and a secondary rain peak. Winters are mild enough for year-round RV travel, and Poteet sees a steady flow of Winter Texans on longer stays at parks along Highways 16 and 97.

Great small RV with plenty of amenities. Karina was a great host and worked with us on pick up and drop off times.

Such an awesome experience. We spent a few days at Colorado Bend State Park and the trailer was perfect. There were not any water/electrical hookups at our campsite, but we were able to fill the RV with potable water, and run the necessary items (lights, water pump, heater) on battery/generator. Such an awesome trip and this travel trailer made the experience much more enjoyable! Karina and Ivan were hospitable AND ensured that we had everything we needed for our trip. 10/10 recommend.

How to book
Private RV parks near Poteet, including Safari Vista RV Park, Hwy 97 E RV Park, Bar M RV Park, Shady Oaks RV Park, and Eagle Ford Estate RV Park, are typically booked directly by phone or through each park's own website. Many of these properties serve a mix of short-stay travelers and long-term oilfield tenants, so calling ahead to confirm nightly availability is worthwhile, especially in April and May.
Choke Canyon State Park bookings go through the Texas State Parks reservation system operated by Reserve America. Campsites and cabins can be reserved up to 5 months in advance, while daily entrance passes are available up to 1 month ahead. A daily entrance fee applies in addition to the site fee, and an annual Texas State Park Pass provides free entry for the pass holder and guests at more than 80 state parks. For the Poteet Strawberry Festival RV area, an application is submitted through the festival's website.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain around Poteet is flat to gently rolling sandy farmland, with mesquite, live oak, and cultivated strawberry fields. Highways 16 and 97 are the main corridors, and RV rigs of typical lengths navigate them without difficulty. Cell coverage is generally reliable, and grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Poteet, Pleasanton, and Jourdanton.
Expect a working small town rather than a resort area. RV parks here tend toward full hookups with gravel or grass pads, laundry, and simple amenities rather than pools and clubhouses. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, javelina, and coyotes in more rural sites. Alligators are present at Choke Canyon Reservoir, and spring and summer are their breeding season, so shoreline caution is warranted. Insect repellent is useful in warmer months.
