Campgrounds and RV parks near Uvalde Estates, TX

The main draws are the rivers. Guests swim, fish, kayak, tube, hike, and bird watch along the spring-fed Nueces River at Chalk Bluff River Resort and Park. Neal's Lodges sits on the Frio River in Concan with tube rentals and river access on site. Garner State Park is the anchor public land in the area. The park covers 1,774 acres with 2.9 miles of Frio River winding through Hill Country terrain, and visitors can swim, float on an inner tube, operate a paddle boat, and hike 16 miles of scenic trails. Old Baldy is the signature climb, and the historic CCC-built pavilion hosts a nightly jukebox dance during the summer season. In town, families can visit the Briscoe-Garner Museum, and in summer join a Frio Bat Flight tour to see the nightly exodus of one of the largest Mexican free-tailed bat colonies in the world.

Summer is peak season. Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend brings the largest crowds, the highest river use, and frequent day-use closures once the park reaches capacity. When Garner State Park reaches maximum capacity it closes to day-use visitors as early as 10 a.m. and typically reopens by 6 p.m., with closures common on holidays and throughout the summer stretch. Campers with reservations and holders of day passes can still enter during these closures, so booking in advance is essential. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Wildflowers appear in March and April, river levels are typically stronger after spring rain, and fall brings cooler hiking temperatures along the canyons. May is the wettest month on average, with roughly 91 mm of rainfall. Winter is quiet and mild by North American standards, though some park loops reduce operations. The Live Oak and Persimmon Hill Loops at Garner State Park close annually for the winter from December through February. River swimming is not practical, but hiking and stargazing remain excellent.

Expect a mix of full-hookup RV parks, rustic riverfront cabins, and state park campsites with varying amp service. At Garner State Park, water and electric sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp service are located in the Rio Frio and Live Oak camping areas, with other loops offering 30 amp, water-only, or smaller-rig-only sites. Screened shelters and cabins are also available in select loops but do not accommodate RVs. Cell service in Uvalde is generally reliable, but coverage thins in the Frio Canyon. Feral hogs are present in the state park, so food should never be left unattended, and river levels can fluctuate with upstream rainfall. Bring shade, water shoes, and insect repellent. Summer nights at Garner include the nightly jukebox dance at the historic pavilion, and quiet hours in the New Garner loops are enforced after the dance ends.
