The Shenandoah region has a clear seasonal rhythm that shapes RV planning. Shenandoah National Park's front-country campgrounds, including Loft Mountain, generally operate between late March or early April and late October or early November, closing for winter when Skyline Drive frequently sees snow and ice. Private campgrounds around Waynesboro have longer seasons, though some scale back services in the coldest months.
Summer brings warm, humid weather and the busiest bookings, while fall foliage draws heavy weekend traffic to Skyline Drive from late September into October. The most comfortable stretch for RV travel typically runs from May through September, with average highs from the low 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and long daylight hours.
Winter camping in the area is limited. Higher elevations in the park run about 10 degrees cooler than the valley, and portions of Skyline Drive are periodically closed during inclement weather, though the park itself remains open and visitors may still enter on foot to hike.
How to book campgrounds near Crimora
Reservations for Loft Mountain Campground are made through the National Park Service's reservation system at Recreation.gov. The booking window is a rolling six months in advance, and popular summer and October weekend dates often fill within minutes of opening. Loft Mountain uses a hybrid model, with a portion of sites reservable through Recreation.gov and the remainder held for first-come, first-served arrivals each day. There are no RV hookups at Loft Mountain, but a dump station with potable water is available a quarter mile from the campground.
Private campgrounds nearby book directly through their own websites. Misty Mountain Camp Resort, Waynesboro North 340 Campground, Shenandoah Valley Campground, and Sun Retreats Shenandoah Valley all accept online reservations, and each publishes its own deposit and cancellation terms. For summer weekends and October foliage weekends, booking several weeks to months ahead is recommended.
What to expect at campgrounds near Crimora
Sites near Crimora fall into two broad categories. Private resorts such as Misty Mountain Camp Resort and Sun Retreats Shenandoah Valley offer full-hookup RV pads plus family amenities including pools, playgrounds, and stocked fishing ponds. Waynesboro North 340 Campground and Shenandoah Valley Campground provide additional valley-floor options with hookups and easy highway access.
Inside the national park, expect a more rustic setup. Loft Mountain offers 207 sites with flush toilets, potable water, a dump station, pay showers at the camp store, and food storage lockers due to active bear presence. The campground accommodates tents and RVs but has no electric, water, or sewer hookups. Dense fog is possible any day of the year on Skyline Drive, so cautious mountain driving in an RV is advised.
