Campgrounds near Shepherdstown, West Virginia
Shepherdstown sits on the Potomac River in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, roughly 20 minutes from Harpers Ferry and about an hour from Washington, D.C. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring John Brown's Fort, Harpers Ferry's historic Lower Town, and the surrounding Civil War sites, along with Antietam National Battlefield across the Maryland line and the C&O Canal towpath.
Most commercial RV parks in this area cluster near Harpers Ferry and Williamsport rather than in Shepherdstown proper. Named options within a short drive include Compound Historic Nature Preserve, Harpers Ferry Campground, Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA Holiday, Nahkeeta Campsite LLC, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Williamsport.
The parks range from riverfront RV sites with hookups to family-oriented resorts with pools and cabins, so the choice usually comes down to how close travelers want to be to the historic district versus how many kid-focused amenities they need on-site.
Things to do near Shepherdstown
Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is the region's main draw. Visitors can tour Lower Town's museums and exhibits, join a ranger program, or venture out to park areas connected to key moments in American history, with bicycling, fishing, climbing, and hiking also available. The Appalachian Trail passes directly through the Lower Town, and the Maryland Heights trail climbs to an overlook of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.
The C&O Canal towpath runs along the Potomac and is popular for flat, family-friendly cycling. Guided rafting, tubing, and zipline tours operate out of Harpers Ferry through the warm months.
Antietam National Battlefield in nearby Sharpsburg, Maryland, and the shops and restaurants of downtown Shepherdstown round out a typical trip.

The most comfortable stretches for RV camping run from mid-April through June and from late August into mid-October, when daytime temperatures are moderate and humidity is manageable.
Summer brings warm, humid weather and the busiest crowds at Harpers Ferry. Summers are warm and humid, winters are cold and snowy, and skies are partly cloudy year round. Pools at family resorts typically open by Memorial Day and close after Labor Day, and river outfitters are in full operation during those months.
Fall is often the sweet spot: leaf color along the Blue Ridge peaks from mid to late October, and October is also the wettest month of the year, averaging about 112 mm of precipitation over roughly 11 rainy days, so travelers should pack rain gear. Winter camping is possible at a few year-round parks, but many amenities close and freezing nights are the norm from December through February.

How to book an RV site near Shepherdstown
Harpers Ferry National Historical Park does not operate a public campground, so RV travelers book through private campgrounds in the surrounding area. The Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA Holiday takes reservations directly on the KOA site and offers pull-thru and back-in RV sites with full hookups, camping cabins, and deluxe cabins with full bathrooms and kitchens.
Harpers Ferry Campground on the Potomac is operated by River Riders and books through its website; choices include riverfront RV sites with electric and water hookups, trailside and hike-in island tent sites, and cliff-top Riverview cabins.
Weekends from Memorial Day through October and any date near a major Civil War anniversary fill up early. Holidays are often booked out around six months ahead, and summer Saturdays and October leaf weekends should be booked several weeks in advance.
What to expect on-site
Sites vary widely in character. The KOA leans family-resort with a swimming pool open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and its RV sites can accommodate rigs up to 95 feet. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Williamsport follows a similar kid-focused model with themed activities and cabins.
Riverfront sites at Harpers Ferry Campground trade some quiet for a location on the water. An active railroad runs adjacent to the campground and a one-way tunnel is nearby, with trains running around the clock, so light sleepers should bring earplugs.
Cell coverage is generally good in the river valley but can drop in the hollows around Shepherdstown. Expect mixed shade, deer sightings at dawn and dusk, and mosquitoes near the water in mid-summer.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherdstown%2C%20West%20VirginiaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Shepherdstown, WV?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Shepherdstown. West Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for Class A, Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels rented on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork to wrangle at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before you fly in, usually under $20. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the process is once your trip is confirmed.

Yes, every RVezy booking in Shepherdstown comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit the road toward Antietam or the C&O Canal with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers eligible damages to the vehicle and provides meaningful financial protection for renters. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can dial up protection for a longer Blue Ridge loop or keep it lean for a quick weekend at Harpers Ferry. Pro tip: review the coverage options carefully at checkout, it's an easy way to lock in confidence before your motorhome rental Shepherdstown adventure begins.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy's cancellation policy includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so if plans shift you have breathing room. Refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, so it's consistent across every listing you browse, and the policy isn't displayed inside each listing because it applies platform-wide. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Shepherdstown rigs for fall foliage season, then relax knowing flexibility is built into your booking.

Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Shepherdstown options are easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park also welcomes leashed pets on most trails. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and ask about nearby off-leash spots, most are happy to share local favorites.

Popular delivery destinations include Harpers Ferry/Civil War Battlefields KOA Holiday, Antietam Hagerstown KOA just across the Maryland line, and Falling Waters Campground south of Williamsport. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $5 per mile round-trip from the host's location. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery, then message your top picks with your campground name to get a custom quote.

nps.gov/anti/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Shepherdstown for an RV?
The best campgrounds near Shepherdstown give you full hookups plus easy access to Civil War history and the Potomac. Top picks include Harpers Ferry/Civil War Battlefields KOA Holiday (full hookup pull-thru sites, heated pool, close to the National Park visitor center); Antietam Hagerstown KOA just across the Maryland line (great for Antietam day trips); Falling Waters Campground on the Potomac; and Brunswick Family Campground along the C&O Canal for a budget-friendly option. For RV camping Shepherdstown style, the Harpers Ferry KOA is the most popular full-service base. Pro tip: book 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends, sites fill fast during reenactment season.
koa.com/campgrounds/harpers-ferry/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Shepherdstown?
Shepherdstown is a true four-season destination, but the sweet spot for a Shepherdstown RV trip is mid-April through late October. Spring brings dogwood blooms and highs in the 60s and low 70s, perfect for Antietam and Harpers Ferry hikes without summer humidity. Summer (June to August) is warm and humid with highs in the mid-80s, ideal for tubing the Potomac. Fall, especially mid-October, is the local favorite: crisp 60s, fiery foliage along the Blue Ridge, and apple harvest season in nearby Jefferson County orchards. Winter dips into the 20s and 30s with occasional snow. Pro tip: book a mid-October weekend RV for peak foliage along Route 9 and the C&O Canal, it's unforgettable.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Shepherdstown?
You'll be in great shape, Shepherdstown is one of the friendliest places for first time renting an RV. The roads around town are mostly flat to gently rolling, with quiet two-lane highways like WV-480 and WV-45 perfect for getting comfortable. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup: how to level, hook up water and power, dump tanks, and operate the awning, slides, and propane. Class B campervans and small Class C motorhomes are the easiest first-timer picks, and many guests start with delivery to a local campground so they skip driving altogether on day one. Pro tip: avoid driving through narrow downtown German Street at peak weekend hours, use the Route 480 bypass instead.
transportation.wv.gov/Pages/default.aspxWhat if I break down during my trip?
You're never alone on the road: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 340 or a dead battery at Antietam is a phone call away from a fix. Help covers towing, tire changes, lockouts, jump-starts, and fuel delivery throughout West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, all within easy reach on a typical Shepherdstown loop. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions about quirks like generator starts or slide-out controls. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's roadside assistance card during your walkthrough and save the RVezy support number, peace of mind in your back pocket.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Shepherdstown RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is easy from Shepherdstown, you're within an hour of four states (WV, MD, VA, PA), so a typical RV road trip from Shepherdstown can cross borders before lunch. Popular multi-state routes include the C&O Canal route into Maryland, Skyline Drive south into Virginia, and Gettysburg/Lancaster east into Pennsylvania. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and their insurance terms, so message the host directly through the listing before booking if you're planning a Niagara or Toronto extension. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: ask your host about EZ-Pass, most highways in this region use electronic tolling.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Shepherdstown RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier line items to plan for in West Virginia, where gas prices typically run close to or slightly below the national average. Expect roughly 7 to 10 mpg for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C, 14 to 20 mpg for Class B campervans, and 12 to 18 mpg for trucks towing travel trailers. For a typical 4-night loop hitting Antietam, Harpers Ferry, and Gettysburg (around 200 miles total), budget $80 to $150 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at the Sheetz on WV-480 or in Charles Town before heading into the National Park areas, prices spike inside tourist zones. Diesel rigs do especially well on rolling Eastern Panhandle terrain.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Shepherdstown?
For peak season (Memorial Day through mid-October), book your campsite 2 to 3 months out, especially for weekends near Antietam anniversary events in September. Harpers Ferry/Civil War Battlefields KOA accepts reservations well in advance through koa.com. State park sites at nearby Greenbrier State Park (MD) and Sky Meadows State Park (VA) can be booked months ahead via the official Maryland and Virginia state park reservation systems. For first-come, first-served options, Brunswick Family Campground along the C&O Canal is a great backup. Pro tip: midweek nights in May or late September are often wide open even at the KOA, a quiet local secret for spontaneous trips.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Shepherdstown?
Driving around Shepherdstown is generally relaxed and RV-friendly. The terrain is gently rolling Eastern Panhandle foothills, with most main routes (US-340, WV-9, and nearby I-81) well-maintained and wide enough for any Class A. Watch for two local quirks: the historic James Rumsey Bridge over the Potomac into Sharpsburg, MD has tight lanes and a low clearance (taller rigs should use the US-340 bridge at Harpers Ferry instead), and downtown German Street can get congested on Friday and Saturday evenings. Winter brings occasional snow and ice from December through February, so check WV511 before driving. Pro tip: use the US-340/I-81 corridor for any tall rig, it's the smoothest route in and out of town.
wv511.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Shepherdstown?
Campgrounds near Shepherdstown are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Full-hookup parks like Harpers Ferry KOA and Antietam Hagerstown KOA offer 30/50 amp electric, water and sewer at the site, hot showers, laundry, dump stations, pools, camp stores, and propane refills. State and national park campgrounds (like Brunswick Family Campground and Greenbrier State Park, MD) typically offer electric and water hookups, central dump stations, and potable water fill spigots near the entrance. Most parks have firewood for sale and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Pro tip: top off your fresh water at the campground entrance before pulling into your site, the spigots are easier to reach there than at most individual pads.
nps.gov/choh/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's included inside a typical Shepherdstown RV rental?
RVezy rentals in Shepherdstown come ready to camp. Expect a queen or king bed in the main suite, convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8 total in most Class Cs), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bath with toilet and shower, roof and dash air conditioning, a propane furnace for cool Panhandle nights, and DOT-approved seatbelts for travel. Many rigs also have a generator (great for boondocking near Sleepy Creek WMA), outdoor speakers, TVs, and some hosts include Wi-Fi hotspots. A campervan rental Shepherdstown style is more compact but still includes the essentials. Pro tip: ask hosts about kitchen kits and linen packages, many include them free, saving you a Walmart run.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherdstown%2C%20West%20VirginiaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Shepherdstown offer flexible pickup and dropoff, plus useful add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include generators ($15 to $30/day), bike racks ($10 to $20/day), camp chairs and outdoor rugs (often free), portable grills, kayaks/SUPs (some hosts list these), and pet packages. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with overage at $0.35 to $0.50/mile, and unlimited mileage packages may be offered by some hosts on request. Pickup can be at the host's location near Shepherdstown, Charles Town, or Martinsburg, or delivered to your campground. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a kitchen kit on your first trip, you'll save hours and walk into a fully set-up campsite ready to relax.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shepherdstown%2C%20West%20VirginiaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and handled entirely through the RVezy platform, no cash or checks change hands with the host. You'll pay your trip total securely online when you book, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup (the amount varies by RV class and listing, and is shown at checkout). As long as you return the rig clean, on time, undamaged, and within mileage and generator-hour limits, the deposit is released back to you after dropoff. Pro tip: take timestamped photos of the RV inside, outside, and the odometer at both pickup and return, it's the easiest way to keep your security deposit smooth and protect your rent an RV in Shepherdstown experience.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Shepherdstown during winter?
Yes, a winter RV rental in Shepherdstown is absolutely doable and surprisingly magical. Many local hosts keep winter-capable rigs on the platform year-round, equipped with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and shore-power options for plug-in heat at campgrounds that stay open like Harpers Ferry KOA. Expect daytime highs in the 30s and 40s with occasional snow, and overnight lows in the 20s, so dress in layers and confirm your host's winterization details before booking. Pro tip: a winter trip to Antietam after a fresh snow is one of the most beautiful sights in the Mid-Atlantic, and campgrounds are nearly empty, you'll often have full hookups all to yourself.
