Camping near New Richmond, Wisconsin
New Richmond sits in St. Croix County in northwestern Wisconsin, roughly 40 minutes northeast of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro. The area draws RV travelers for its combination of state park camping, private riverfront resorts, and easy access to the St. Croix and Apple rivers. Willow River State Park is close to the Minnesota state border, about a 40-minute drive from Minneapolis, and William O'Brien State Park lies across the St. Croix River in Minnesota, putting two major public campgrounds within easy reach.
Private options cluster along the Apple River near Somerset. Rivers Edge Campground, Float-Rite Park, and Apple River Hide-A-Way all offer riverfront sites paired with tubing operations, and each runs shuttles and rentals for float trips during the summer season.
For a quieter public-lands stay, Willow River State Park Campground and Savanna - William O Brien State Park focus on hiking, paddling, and shaded sites rather than the tubing scene, giving RVers a choice between social riverfront weekends and calmer forested loops.
Things to do near New Richmond
Tubing the Apple River is the signature summer activity. Operators run shuttles to upstream drop points and float riders back toward their campgrounds, with trips typically lasting a few hours on the water. The pace ranges from a leisurely drift on hot afternoons to livelier stretches through light rapids, and the river is a popular refresher during summer heat.
Willow River State Park anchors the hiking and paddling scene. Willow Falls is the star attraction with four viewpoints, Little Falls Lake is open for kayaking, cruising, and swimming, and the park has more than 13 miles of hiking trails.
Across the St. Croix in Minnesota, William O'Brien State Park adds river paddling, a swim beach on Lake Alice, and 12 miles of hiking trails that pass through oak savannas, wetlands, glacial moraine, and wooded forests.
