Camping near Star Prairie, Wisconsin
Star Prairie sits along the Apple River in St. Croix County, about an hour northeast of the Twin Cities. The village anchors a stretch of tubing-friendly river that draws RV travelers from across the Upper Midwest, with most campgrounds clustered downstream around Somerset and New Richmond. Rivers Edge Campground, Float-Rite Park, and Apple River Hide-A-Way line the Apple River within a short drive of town, and all three lean heavily into summer tubing traffic and weekend events.
For RV travelers who want quieter, public-land camping, two state parks sit within day-trip range. Interstate State Park, Wisconsin's oldest state park, was established in 1900 and lies up the St. Croix River in St. Croix Falls, with two campgrounds along the federally designated St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Across the river in Minnesota, William O'Brien State Park has two campgrounds, the Savanna and Riverway, set in a forested river-valley landscape. Together these options cover the spectrum from busy riverside resorts to forested state-park loops, making Star Prairie a flexible base for a multi-stop RV trip.
Things to do around Star Prairie
Tubing the Apple River is the headline activity, with outfitters in and around Somerset providing rentals and shuttle service through the summer. Canoeing, kayaking, and fishing are popular on both the Apple and the wider St. Croix. At Interstate State Park, visitors can take in stunning views of the St. Croix river and the Dalles of St. Croix, a steep-sided gorge, and the Ice Age Interpretive Center covers the region's glacial history. Nine miles of trails wind throughout the park, with scenic overlooks above the river. Across the river, William O'Brien State Park features 12 miles of hiking trails that pass through oak savannas, wetlands, glacial moraine, and wooded forests, plus a swimming beach at Lake Alice. Concerts at Somerset Amphitheater, local golf courses, and the 45th Parallel Distillery round out rainy-day options.

Summer is the busiest season by a wide margin. Tubing outfitters, riverside campgrounds, and music events at Somerset Amphitheater all run at full tilt from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and weekend reservations at the private Apple River campgrounds fill weeks ahead. Float-Rite Park and Apple River Hide-A-Way skew toward a loud, party-oriented crowd on summer weekends, so families often book mid-week stays or choose state-park campgrounds instead.
Late spring and early fall trade warm river water for cooler nights and lighter crowds. September brings hardwood color along the St. Croix bluffs and is a strong window for hiking and paddling. Winter camping is limited but available: at Interstate State Park, the north campground is open May 1 through Oct. 31, and the south campground and group camp are open throughout the year. Across the river, winter camping is available at the Savanna Campground at William O'Brien. Plan RV trips for the April-through-October window for the broadest selection of sites and full services.
How to book campgrounds near Star Prairie
Wisconsin state-park sites use the state's central reservation system. Camping reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance of the planned date of occupancy. Campers must make a reservation before setting up on any site. Sites can be reserved online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. A vehicle admission pass is required for any motor vehicles brought into the property. For William O'Brien State Park in Minnesota, reservations can be made online 24/7 or by phone at 866-857-2757 from April through September between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., and a Minnesota State Park permit is required.
Private Apple River campgrounds, including Rivers Edge Campground, Float-Rite Park, and Apple River Hide-A-Way, book directly through their own websites or by phone, and summer weekends should be locked in early. State-park electric sites for July and August typically disappear soon after they open 11 months out, so set a calendar reminder.
What to expect on the ground
The Apple River campgrounds are large, social, and built around tubing. Float-Rite Park, Apple River Hide-A-Way, and Rivers Edge offer riverfront sites with hookups for RVs, and the scene gets lively on weekends with bar areas, live music, and shuttle traffic. State-park sites are quieter and more wooded but offer fewer hookups. At Interstate State Park, the North loop has 40 campsites with 34 electric hookups plus showers and flush and vault toilets, the South loop has 44 sites with no hookups and vault toilets, and a dump station is located near the Ice Age Center. Cell service is poor in the area, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival. Mosquitoes peak in June and early July; bring repellent and screened shelter.
