Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Clawson, MI
How much does an RV rental in Clawson, MI typically cost?
RV rental in Clawson is more affordable than most people expect, with travel trailers often starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes ranging from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes from $250 to $400 per night. Pricing depends on the season, RV age, and included extras like generators, bike racks, or camping gear. To find a cheap RV rental in Clawson, target shoulder-season trips in May or September when Detroit-area demand cools but the weather is still great. Pro tip: many Clawson and Royal Oak hosts bundle in kitchen kits and outdoor chairs at no extra cost, which can save you $50 or more versus renting them separately. Filter by price range and message hosts directly for multi-night discounts.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clawson%2C%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Clawson, MI?
Good news: a regular Michigan driver's license (or any valid US or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Clawson for the vast majority of motorhomes and travel trailers on RVezy. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver License (CDL) or special endorsement for standard RVs, which covers Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and nearly every travel trailer on the platform. RVezy approved drivers must be 25 or older, and the platform verifies your ID during booking. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before you fly into Detroit Metro and you're all set to hit the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection comes with my Clawson, MI RV rental?
Every RV rental in Clawson booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you drive away. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you peace of mind without the hassle of arranging separate coverage. You choose your protection level during checkout (not the host), so you can pick the option that matches how adventurous your Michigan RV trip will be. Pro tip: do a quick walkthrough video with your host at pickup, time-stamped through the RVezy app, to make any post-trip claim simple and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Clawson RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy (not the individual host) sets a clear, consistent cancellation policy that applies across every listing in Clawson and the wider Detroit metro. There's a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, with additional flexibility based on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy provides a refund or travel credit so your trip plans stay protected. Lake-effect snowstorms or a sudden Great Lakes squall? RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip to help you sort it out. Pro tip: book early to lock in your preferred RV, then review the full cancellation terms at checkout so you know exactly where you stand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Clawson, MI RV trip?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Clawson, and Michigan is one of the most dog-welcoming camping states in the country. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search, and message the host so they know your pup's size and breed. Michigan state parks welcome leashed dogs at campsites and on most trails (just not designated swim beaches), which means Proud Lake, Holly, and Pontiac Lake Recreation Areas are all fair game. Pro tip: the Red Oaks Dog Park in nearby Madison Heights and the Orion Oaks Bark Park (with its dog-only lake) are both within 20 minutes of Clawson and make great pre-trip warmups for your four-legged co-pilot.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parksCan the RV be delivered to me in Clawson or at a nearby campground?
Yes, RV delivery in Clawson is one of the most popular options, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip city driving on I-75 or Woodward Avenue. Many Clawson, Royal Oak, and Troy hosts will deliver your motorhome rental directly to your driveway or to a campground like Addison Oaks County Park, Holly Recreation Area, or Algonac State Park, then handle the full setup including leveling, hookups, and slide-outs. Delivery fees are typically based on distance, often a flat fee within a set radius plus a per-mile rate beyond that. Pro tip: ask your host about delivery near the Woodward Dream Cruise route in August, it's a Clawson tradition and an unforgettable way to experience your RV.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clawson%2C%20MichiganHow far can I drive on my Clawson, MI RV trip?
You've got tons of range from Clawson, which sits in the heart of metro Detroit with easy interstate access in every direction. Each host sets a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for an upgrade fee). Popular drives from Clawson include Holly Recreation Area (about 45 minutes), Port Crescent State Park on Lake Huron's Thumb (about 2 hours), Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (about 4.5 hours), and Mackinaw City (about 4.5 hours). Pro tip: if you're planning a long Up North loop, ask your host about an unlimited-mileage add-on before booking, it's often cheaper than paying overage fees later.
nps.gov/slbe/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Clawson, MI?
You're surrounded by excellent options for RV camping near Clawson. Top picks within an hour include: Addison Oaks County Park in Leonard (about 35 minutes north, full-hookup sites and a swimming lake), Holly Recreation Area near Holly (about 45 minutes northwest, multiple lakes and trails with electric sites), Pontiac Lake Recreation Area in Waterford (about 40 minutes west, spacious sites with electric hookups), Proud Lake Recreation Area in Commerce Township (about 40 minutes, secluded wooded sites), and Algonac State Park on the St. Clair River (about 1 hour east, freighter-watching from your campsite). Pro tip: Michigan's state-park reservation window opens six months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system, so book summer weekends as early as January.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time for an RV trip from Clawson, MI?
Late May through mid-October is prime season for an RV road trip from Clawson, with June through September being the absolute sweet spot. Summer highs in southeast Michigan typically run in the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit with warm lake-friendly evenings, while September brings cooler days in the 60s to mid 70s and far fewer mosquitoes. Late September into mid-October delivers spectacular fall color, especially north toward Tawas, Traverse City, and the Pictured Rocks. Winter rentals are available too if you want to chase ice caves or hit Boyne Mountain, just look for an RV with a four-season package, heated tanks, and 30-amp shore power. Pro tip: book your Memorial Day or Fourth of July rental at least three months out, Detroit-area RVs go fast.
weather.gov/dtx/I'm first time renting an RV. What support will I get in Clawson?
You won't be left figuring things out alone. Every Clawson host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving the rig, leveling jacks, slide-outs, water and waste systems, propane, and the generator. You can message your host directly through RVezy before booking with any question, no matter how basic. On the road, RVezy's 24/7 roadside assistance and customer support team are one call away. For first-timers nervous about driving a big rig through Woodward or I-696, opt for a Class B campervan rental in Clawson or a smaller Class C, then have the host deliver it to your campground. Pro tip: practice slow-speed maneuvers and backing up in a large, empty lot on a quiet Sunday morning before heading north.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're covered around the clock. Every RV rental in Clawson includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, so a flat tire on I-75, a dead battery in a Meijer parking lot, or a tow off M-59 is handled with one phone call. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip if you need help reaching your host, navigating a repair, or finding a nearby service center. Metro Detroit has dozens of certified RV service shops, including options in Belleville, Brighton, and Warren, so parts and help are never far. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before pickup so it's ready when (and if) you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Clawson RV rental across the border into Canada?
Cross-border travel into Canada is possible for many Clawson rentals, but it's not automatic, you'll need explicit written approval from your host before crossing the Ambassador Bridge or Detroit-Windsor Tunnel because of insurance and protection-plan implications. Message the host directly from the listing to confirm before booking if a Canada trip is on your itinerary, popular runs include Point Pelee National Park (about 1 hour from Clawson) and Niagara Falls (about 4 hours via Highway 401). Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: bring a passport or enhanced driver's license, your rental agreement, and the host's written consent, Canada Border Services will ask for all three.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Realistic fuel planning makes your trip way more relaxed. Class B campervans typically get around 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes average about 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A motorhomes typically deliver 6 to 10 mpg. Most Clawson-area motorhomes run on regular unleaded; some larger Class As take diesel. Michigan gas prices typically hover near the national average, with diesel often running higher per gallon. For a 500-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $200 to $275 for fuel based on recent pump prices. Pro tip: warehouse-club and high-volume stations along Big Beaver Road in Troy (just minutes from Clawson) consistently have some of the lowest gas prices in Oakland County, top off before you hit the highway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Clawson RV trip?
For Michigan state parks, reservations open six months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system, and that's when you should book if you're targeting a summer weekend at popular Holly, Pontiac Lake, or Algonac State Park. For Sleeping Bear Dunes' Platte River and D.H. Day campgrounds, the booking window also opens six months out through Recreation.gov, and prime July sites can vanish within hours. Private campgrounds like the Detroit/Greenfield KOA Holiday in Ypsilanti typically book 2 to 4 months ahead for peak weekends. Pro tip: every vehicle entering a Michigan state park needs a Recreation Passport, add it during checkout or vehicle registration so you're not stuck at the gate.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Clawson?
Clawson sits at the crossroads of metro Detroit, so driving is mostly easy, flat, and well-paved, but city traffic is the real story. I-75, I-696, and M-59 are your main arteries and can get congested roughly 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays, so plan departures outside rush hour. Watch for the famous Michigan Left turn (the U-turn-then-right maneuver), especially along Big Beaver and 14 Mile Road. Winter can bring snow and salt-treated roads from December through March, so most hosts only rent winter-ready RVs in season. Pro tip: always check posted clearance heights before driving a tall RV under any railroad overpass in the area, and stick to interstate-grade routes like I-75 when heading north.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities do nearby campgrounds offer for my RV?
Most campgrounds within an hour of Clawson are well-equipped for RV camping. Michigan State Park modern sites at Holly, Pontiac Lake, Proud Lake, and Algonac State Park typically offer electric hookups, potable water spigots, central dump stations, modern restrooms with hot showers, and picnic tables with fire rings. County and private parks like Addison Oaks County Park and Camp Dearborn often add full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), Wi-Fi, swimming, and camp stores. For dumping and water fills on the road, large travel centers along I-75 north of Detroit are reliable options. Pro tip: bring at least 50 feet of fresh-water hose and a 25-foot 30-amp extension cord, hookups at older Michigan state parks can be surprisingly far from your pad.
midnrreservations.com/What's actually inside the RVs available in Clawson, MI?
Today's RV rentals in Clawson come well-equipped for a comfortable Michigan adventure. Most Class C motorhomes sleep 4 to 7 in a combination of cab-over bunk, dinette conversion, and rear queen, with a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave), wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC, furnace, and a TV with DVD or streaming. Travel trailers offer similar layouts in a tow-behind format. Many hosts also include a generator for boondocking, outdoor speakers, a power awning, leveling blocks, and basic kitchenware. Seatbelts are provided for travel passengers, confirm the count matches your group. Pro tip: ask if a Wi-Fi hotspot is included, cell service is strong along I-75 but gets patchy once you head deeper Up North.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clawson%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons, fees, and pickup details should I expect?
Hosts in Clawson typically offer a mix of included essentials and optional add-ons so you only pay for what you need. Common paid extras include generator hours (often a few dollars per hour beyond a daily allowance), propane refills, dump-and-fill service, bedding and linen packages, bike racks, kayaks, and extra mileage. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Clawson, Royal Oak, Madison Heights, or Troy, with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough and a defined return window. Many hosts offer flexible pickup times so you can leave for Up North in the cool of the morning. Pro tip: ask whether the host offers RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer hauls to Mackinaw City or the Upper Peninsula, it often saves money on trips over 600 miles.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clawson%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple, secure, and fully handled inside the RVezy platform, no cash, no third-party apps, no awkward driveway transactions. Your rental cost (nightly rate, RVezy fees, taxes, and any add-ons you select) is charged to your card at booking. A separate refundable security deposit is pre-authorized shortly before pickup, with the amount set by the host based on the RV's value, and released back to you after the host confirms the RV is returned clean, fueled, and damage-free. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround at pickup with your host using the RVezy in-app checklist and snap time-stamped photos, it's the single best way to ensure your full deposit comes back fast. Here's a Clawson-specific tip you won't find in most guidebooks: time your trip around the Woodward Dream Cruise on the third Saturday of August, when classic-car fans turn Woodward Avenue (right through Clawson) into one of the world's largest rolling car shows. Many RVezy hosts in the area will deliver your motorhome to a private lot in Clawson, Royal Oak, or Ferndale so you've got AC, a bathroom, and a comfy nap spot trackside. Other can't-miss local moves: grab breakfast at a downtown Clawson favorite before heading north, and stock up at the Royal Oak Farmers Market on Saturday morning. Then point your RV up I-75 for a family RV trip Clawson locals love, Up North awaits.
