Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Ferndale, MI
How much does an RV rental in Ferndale, MI typically cost?
Renting an RV in Ferndale is more affordable than many travelers expect for the Detroit metro. Motorhomes in the Ferndale area typically range from about $175 to $250 per night, while travel trailers often run from $90 to $150 per night, and many hosts offer discounts on weekly or monthly bookings. Want a cheap RV rental in Ferndale? Filter by towable trailers, book midweek, and aim for shoulder season (May or late September) when prices dip. Pro tip: hosts on RVezy set their own pricing and add-ons, so message a few owners to compare delivery fees and mileage packages. You will often find better value here than at a traditional rental counter.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ferndale,MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Ferndale, Michigan?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular Michigan driver's license (or any standard US or international license) is all you need to rent an RV in Ferndale. Michigan does not require a special license or commercial driver's license (CDL) for personal-use motorhomes and travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers nearly every RV on the RVezy platform. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified right inside the booking flow, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you are good to go. Most Class B campervans and Class C motorhomes drive much like a large van.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Ferndale RV rental?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Ferndale through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-75 or M-1 (Woodward) with confidence. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV and gives you financial peace of mind (note: it is a protection plan, not traditional auto insurance). During checkout you choose your protection level to match your trip, whether it is a weekend at Belle Isle or a week-long Michigan RV trip up north. Coverage levels and details are set by RVezy, not the host, so you stay in control. That built-in safety net is one big reason first-timers feel comfortable booking on RVezy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Ferndale RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (hosts do not), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you have time to review your plans. Refunds after that depend on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will refund your booking or provide travel credits so your Ferndale RV trip stays on track. The full cancellation details are available on RVezy's Help Center and during checkout. If something changes, RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip, so you are never figuring it out alone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Ferndale RV rental?
Absolutely, Ferndale is one of the most dog-friendly towns in metro Detroit, and plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Ferndale are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you will see listings where hosts welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Each host sets their own pet rules and may add a small cleaning fee, which is listed clearly on the listing page. Once you are on the road, you will love spots like Geary Park and the off-leash dog park at Marshbank Park in West Bloomfield. Heading further out, Pontiac Lake Recreation Area and Proud Lake Recreation Area both have pet-friendly campsites and trails to stretch four paws.
www2.dnr.state.mi.us/parksandtrails/Can the RV be delivered to me in Ferndale?
Yes, and RV delivery in Ferndale is one of the smartest moves for first-timers who don't want to drive a big rig through Nine Mile traffic. Many RVezy hosts offer delivery and setup straight to your campground, driveway, or event location, including popular spots like Camp Dearborn, Addison Oaks County Park, or even a tailgate near Ford Field. Your host will level the RV, connect hookups, walk you through the systems, and pick it up when your trip ends. Delivery fees vary by distance, so message the host directly through the listing to confirm pricing to your address. For a stress-free first-time RV experience in metro Detroit, delivery is hard to beat.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ferndale,MichiganHow far can I travel on a Ferndale RV trip?
You have serious range from Ferndale, and mileage is flexible. Hosts set their own mileage policies, with many offering generous daily allowances and some listing RV rentals with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer Michigan loop. From Ferndale you can reach Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in about 4 hours (250 miles), Mackinac City in about 4.5 hours (285 miles), Traverse City in roughly 4 hours (240 miles), Pictured Rocks in around 7 hours, and Holland State Park on Lake Michigan in about 3 hours. Before you book, check the listing's mileage details and message the host if you are planning a long haul. They will often customize a package for your route.
michigan.org/Where are the best campgrounds near Ferndale, MI?
You have great options within an hour of Ferndale, ranging from full-hookup resorts to wooded state parks. Camp Dearborn (about 30 minutes west) offers lakes, beaches, and full-hookup RV sites on 626 acres. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley near New Hudson sits on four spring-fed lakes with planned family activities. Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA Holiday in Ypsilanti is a clean, easy stop with pull-throughs and a pool. For a state-park feel, Pontiac Lake Recreation Area and Proud Lake Recreation Area both offer modern RV sites with electric hookups and great trails. Addison Oaks County Park in Leonard is another local favorite with 30/50 amp hookups. Book Michigan State Parks through the Michigan DNR reservation system up to 6 months in advance.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Ferndale?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV camping in Ferndale and metro Detroit, with summer highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit and warm Great Lakes water by July. June through August is peak season for festivals like Ferndale Pride and the Woodward Dream Cruise (mid-August), so book your motorhome rental in Ferndale early for those weekends. September and early October are a local insider favorite: fewer bugs, cooler nights in the 50s, brilliant fall color along M-59, and lower campground rates. Winters here are cold (often in the 20s with snow), and most area campgrounds close November through April, though a few like Hidden Lakes RV Resort stay open year-round for hardy adventurers.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I get help figuring it out?
Yes, and that is one of the best parts of renting on RVezy. First time renting an RV in Ferndale? Every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery), walking you through the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, awning, and dump procedures. You can also message the host before booking with any questions, and RVezy's customer support is available throughout your trip. Most first-timers pick a Class C motorhome or a campervan rental in Ferndale because they drive much like a large van. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop through a quiet neighborhood near 8 Mile before merging onto I-696, and you will be road-ready in minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002007833-RentersWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You will not be stranded. Every RV rental in Ferndale booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something goes wrong on I-75 heading to Frankenmuth or out near Port Huron, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a great resource since they know their rig best, and RVezy's support team can step in to coordinate. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup, save your host's number and the roadside assistance line to your phone, and you are set. Most trips never need that number, but it is reassuring to have.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Ferndale RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes, cross-border and interstate travel is often possible, and Ferndale is perfectly positioned for both. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Ambassador Bridge to Ontario are just 15 minutes south, making a Canadian RV road trip from Ferndale very doable, but you must get written approval from your host before crossing, since insurance and protection coverage need to be confirmed for Canada. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Popular interstate routes from Ferndale include Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio (3 hours), Indiana Dunes National Park (4 hours), and Chicago (4.5 hours). Bring your passport, vehicle registration, and the host's written permission letter for any border crossing.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on a Ferndale RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it is easy to plan for. Michigan gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, hovering around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon for regular in metro Detroit. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and large Class A rigs get 6 to 10 mpg. For a weekend RV road trip from Ferndale to Sleeping Bear Dunes (about 500 miles round trip) in a Class C, expect roughly $150 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at Costco in Madison Heights or the Sam's Club in Utica before leaving town, and use GasBuddy along your route to find cheaper diesel up north.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Ferndale?
Book early and you will get the best sites. Michigan State Parks open reservations 6 months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system (midnrreservations.com), and popular spots like Pontiac Lake, Proud Lake, and Algonac State Park fill quickly for summer weekends, holidays, and the Woodward Dream Cruise in August. Oakland County Parks (Addison Oaks, Groveland Oaks) take reservations roughly 12 months ahead. Private parks like Camp Dearborn and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley book up 2 to 3 months out for July and August. Pro tip: aim for Sunday through Thursday arrivals to score better availability and lower rates, and ask your RVezy host if they will deliver directly to your reserved site.
www2.dnr.state.mi.us/parksandtrails/What is driving an RV like in metro Detroit?
Driving in Ferndale is friendlier than you might think, especially if you avoid rush hour. Woodward Avenue (M-1) is wide and easy, and I-696 and I-75 are flat with generous lanes, but try to skip the 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM commute windows. Watch overhead clearance on a few older underpasses near downtown Detroit (some sit under 13 feet), and steer clear of narrow side streets in Royal Oak and Birmingham with tall trailers. If city driving makes you nervous, book RV delivery in Ferndale and have your host meet you at your campground instead. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so most renters stick to May through October for easy driving.
michigan.gov/mdotWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Ferndale?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable RV camping experience near Ferndale. Most modern sites at Michigan State Parks like Pontiac Lake and Proud Lake offer 30/50 amp electric, with water spigots and dump stations on-site. Private parks like Camp Dearborn, Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA, and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley typically include full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and playgrounds. For free dump stations, Camp Dearborn and many Oakland County Parks allow paid guests to dump, and you can fill freshwater there too. Pro tip: download the Sanidumps or RV Dump Sites app before your trip to map out dump stations along your Michigan route in case you need a top-off.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat's inside a typical Ferndale RV rental?
You will feel right at home. Most RV rentals in Ferndale come fully equipped with real beds (queen in the main suite, plus convertible dinettes and bunks in family rigs), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate-controlled AC and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many Class C motorhomes and travel trailers also include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator for off-grid stays. Wi-Fi varies, so many renters use their phone hotspot, which works well across metro Detroit. Each listing on RVezy shows photos, sleeping capacity, and a full amenity checklist so you can match the rig to your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ferndale,MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup logistics should I know about?
Hosts make it easy to customize your Ferndale RV trip. Popular add-ons include camping chairs and tables, bike racks, generators, propane top-offs, linen and kitchen kits, and pet packages, each priced by the host and listed clearly during booking. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Ferndale, Royal Oak, Hazel Park, or nearby, or you can request RV delivery to your campground for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary: many hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per day, with overages around $0.35 to $0.50 per mile, and some listings include unlimited mileage. Pro tip: bundle add-ons up front to save versus paying at pickup, and confirm a return time window that gives you breathing room.
ferndalemi.gov/How do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy's platform: you pay online when you book (no cash exchanged with the host), and your trip total includes the nightly rate, protection plan, service fee, and any add-ons you select. A separate refundable security deposit is held before pickup to cover things like minor damage, excess mileage, or late returns, and it is released back to you after the trip if everything checks out. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around video with your host at both pickup and drop-off in Ferndale, document the fuel and propane levels, and return the rig clean. That is the easiest way to get your full deposit back fast.
