Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Royal Oak, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Royal Oak, MI?
Renting an RV in Royal Oak is often more affordable than booking hotels during Woodward Dream Cruise week or a Tigers homestand. Travel trailers near Royal Oak typically run around $125 to $175 per night, while motorhomes average around $200 to $275 per night, and many hosts offer 10 to 20 percent discounts on weekly or monthly bookings. To find a cheap RV rental in Royal Oak, search midweek dates, book outside peak summer weekends, and sort results by price. Pro tip: pair a travel trailer with a campsite at Camp Dearborn or Holly State Recreation Area to keep the all-in cost down, leaving more budget for Tigers tickets or a meal in downtown Royal Oak.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Royal%20Oak%2C%20MichiganWhat kind of license do I need to rent an RV in Michigan?
Good news for first-time renters: in Michigan, a regular driver's license is all you need to drive almost any RV you'll find on RVezy, from a Class B campervan to a Class C motorhome or a travel trailer. The state only requires a special Recreational Double R endorsement in the rare case of towing a fifth wheel plus a second trailer behind it, which is not something most renters do. To rent on RVezy you must be 25 or older and complete a quick ID verification through the platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you are ready to hit Woodward Avenue.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance included with my Royal Oak booking?
Every RV rental in Royal Oak booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you are covered before you pull out of the driveway. The protection plan provides meaningful financial peace of mind by covering most damages to the vehicle during your trip. During checkout you (not the host) choose your level of coverage, so you can pick the option that fits your comfort and budget. That means if a deer wanders onto I-75 outside of town or a branch falls on the awning at Pontiac Lake, you have a plan and a number to call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Royal Oak RV rental?
Booking your Royal Oak RV trip is low risk because RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period after you book. If your plans change shortly after confirming, you have a window to cancel without losing your trip cost. The exact terms depend on how far out from your trip you cancel, and you will see everything clearly during checkout. If your host cancels, RVezy will refund you or offer travel credits so your trip is protected. If you are unsure, message RVezy support before booking and they will walk you through the options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Royal Oak RV trip?
Yes, Royal Oak is a dog-friendly town and a pet-friendly RV rental in Royal Oak is easy to find on RVezy by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page. Many local hosts welcome pets, sometimes with a small cleaning fee, so confirm any specifics in the listing details before you book. On the road, Michigan state park campgrounds like Holly Recreation Area and Proud Lake allow leashed pets at campsites (6-foot leash required by the DNR), and Royal Oak itself has the Royal Oak Dog Park on Edgeworth Avenue for a pre-trip run. Bring a tie-out, water bowl, and proof of vaccinations and your pup is set for the adventure.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/rules-regulationsCan the RV be delivered to me in Royal Oak?
Yes, RV delivery in Royal Oak is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a 30-foot motorhome through the Woodward Avenue and I-696 interchange. Many hosts in the metro Detroit area will deliver the RV directly to your driveway, a campground site at Camp Dearborn, or a tailgating spot near Comerica Park, then set it up and walk you through every system. Delivery fees vary by distance, so use the Delivery filter when searching and message the host with your destination address for an exact quote. It is the easiest way to start a Royal Oak RV trip without ever getting behind the wheel of a big rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Royal%20Oak%2C%20MichiganHow does mileage work and how far can I drive from Royal Oak?
Royal Oak is a great launchpad for an RV road trip, with most hosts offering daily mileage allowances (often 100 to 150 miles per day) and add-on packages if you want unlimited mileage for a longer trip. From Royal Oak you can reach Sleeping Bear Dunes in roughly 4.5 hours (about 250 miles), Mackinaw City in around 4.5 hours (about 285 miles), Traverse City wine country in about 4 hours (around 235 miles), or Pictured Rocks in the Upper Peninsula in about 7 hours. Before booking, check the listing's mileage policy and ask the host directly for a custom rate if you are planning a bigger loop. Many hosts will add miles for a fair flat fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Royal%20Oak%2C%20MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds near Royal Oak, MI?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Royal Oak. Top picks include Camp Dearborn in Milford (about 35 minutes west, with hookups and a fishing lake), Holly State Recreation Area (about 45 minutes north, with modern sites and beach access), Proud Lake Recreation Area in Commerce Township (year-round access and trail connections), Pontiac Lake Recreation Area in Waterford (electric sites and a swim beach), and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley (a family favorite with planned activities). All five accept RVs and most offer electric hookups. Michigan state parks like Holly and Proud Lake require a Recreation Passport for vehicle entry, which is $14 annually for Michigan residents or $11 daily for non-residents.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/recreation-passportWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Royal Oak?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Royal Oak, with July averaging a comfortable high near 83F and low near 64F. June and September are smart-money months: fewer crowds, fewer mosquitoes, and easier campground reservations, with daytime highs typically in the 70s. Fall foliage peaks in early to mid-October across Oakland County, making it a stunning time for a quick trip to Holly or Proud Lake. Winter RVing is possible but cold, with January averaging a high near 32F and lows near 19F, so plan for heated tanks and shore power between December and February. Spring shoulder trips in late April can be muddy but the trails come alive.
weather.gov/dtx/I have never driven an RV before. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Many first-time RV renters start out in metro markets like Royal Oak. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through how to drive, level, hook up, dump, and operate everything from the generator to the awning. You can also message your host before booking with any questions, and many Royal Oak hosts offer delivery and setup so you skip the driving learning curve entirely. If you do drive yourself, start with a Class C motorhome or travel trailer (easier to handle than a 35-foot Class A) and practice in a large, quiet lot before heading out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are not alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked at Belle Isle or broken down on I-75 heading toward Bay City. Roadside covers common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to a service location. For mechanical or system issues like an AC that quits or a slide-out that sticks, message your host directly through the RVezy app since they know their RV best and often have a quick fix. If something bigger comes up, RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip to help sort it out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Royal Oak RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-border trips are popular from Royal Oak since you are only about 30 minutes from the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Ambassador Bridge, but Canada travel must be approved by your specific host because insurance and protection vary across the border. Always ask before booking by messaging the host directly. Travel between US states is generally allowed and a great way to explore. Trips to Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Popular interstate routes from Royal Oak include heading south to Hocking Hills, Ohio (about 4 hours), east to Niagara Falls (about 4 hours through Canada or 6 hours through New York), or north to Mackinaw City via I-75.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Michigan RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second biggest expense after the rental itself, but it is easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes near Royal Oak average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 14 to 18 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg combined). Michigan gas prices have recently averaged around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon, so a 500-mile loop from Royal Oak to Traverse City and back in a Class C runs roughly $175 to $225 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Royal Oak or along I-75 in Oakland County, where prices tend to be lower than at tourist exits up north.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Royal Oak?
Book early and your trip gets a lot easier. Michigan state park campsites (Holly, Proud Lake, Pontiac Lake, Highland) can be reserved through MiDNRReservations.com up to six months ahead of arrival, and summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill up the moment the booking window opens. For July 4th, the Woodward Dream Cruise (third Saturday in August), and Labor Day weekend, aim to reserve right at the six-month mark. Private campgrounds like Camp Dearborn and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley book up fast too. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday, search for Sunday-through-Thursday stays. Availability opens up dramatically.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like in and around Royal Oak?
Driving an RV around Royal Oak is very manageable once you know a few local quirks. Woodward Avenue (M-1) is the main artery and is wide and easy to navigate, but avoid Woodward during the third weekend of August when the Woodward Dream Cruise shuts it down. I-75, I-696, and M-10 (the Lodge Freeway) all have low overpasses in spots, so check your RV's height (most Class C rigs are 10 to 11 feet) and stick to truck routes when possible. Winter brings snow, ice, and salt brine from November through March, so plan trips for May through October if you're new to RVing. Rush hour on I-696 is heavy 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhere can I dump tanks and fill water near Royal Oak?
Most local campgrounds have you covered. Holly State Recreation Area, Proud Lake, Pontiac Lake, and Camp Dearborn all have dump stations and potable water fill stations available to overnight guests, and some allow non-campers to dump for a small fee. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley offers full hookups at the site so you can dump and fill without moving the RV. If you need a dump station on the way home, sanidumps.com and similar directories list several within 30 minutes of Royal Oak, including stations off I-75 in Oakland County. Pro tip: dump at the end of your trip rather than between stops, and always wear gloves and use the campground's non-potable hose for tank rinsing.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat amenities come standard in a Royal Oak RV rental?
You will be surprised how well equipped most rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Royal Oak includes a queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Most hosts also include linens, cookware, plates, and basic cleaning supplies, and many offer extras like outdoor chairs, generators, or bike racks as add-ons. WiFi is hit or miss in rural Michigan so most renters use their phone hotspot. Check the listing's amenity list to confirm what is included, then message the host if you need something specific like a child car seat anchor or a CPAP-friendly outlet.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Royal%20Oak%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons can I get with my Royal Oak RV rental?
Most Royal Oak hosts offer helpful add-ons that make your trip easier, including generator use, camping chair and table sets, bike racks, kayak racks, BBQs, linens packages, and unlimited mileage upgrades. Many also offer prep-and-go kits with kitchen basics so you do not have to buy anything before the trip. Pickup is typically at the host's home or a public meeting spot, and dropoff happens at the same location at the end of your trip. Pro tip: book delivery if you want to skip pickup entirely. Hosts will set the RV up at Camp Dearborn or your driveway and pick it up at the end, no driving required.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Royal%20Oak%2C%20MichiganHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payments are simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you never need to hand cash or a check to a host. When you book your RV rental in Royal Oak, you pay the rental cost through a secure checkout, and a refundable security deposit is held on your card (not charged) shortly before the trip starts. The deposit is released back to you after the trip ends, assuming no damage, missing equipment, or extra cleaning is needed. To avoid issues, do a thorough walk-around at pickup with the host and take photos of the exterior, interior, and odometer. Return the RV in the same condition with the fuel and tanks per the listing terms and your deposit comes back quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I park an RV overnight in Royal Oak itself?
Royal Oak is a dense, walkable suburb, and local ordinances limit how long large recreational vehicles can be parked on city streets or in residential areas. The smart move is to use RV delivery in Royal Oak so the host drops it at your destination, or park the RV at a nearby campground like Camp Dearborn (about 35 minutes) or Holly Recreation Area (about 45 minutes) and drive your car into town for restaurants and the Detroit Zoo. Short-term parking in your driveway for loading and unloading is generally fine. Plan to be at the campground by nightfall for a family RV trip Royal Oak everyone will remember.
