RV & camper rentals in Ely, MN

Great news: an RV rental in Ely, MN is often more affordable than booking a Boundary Waters resort cabin. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run about $90 to $175 per night, while Class C motorhomes range from roughly $175 to $300 per night, and campervans land somewhere in between. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can filter by your budget, sleeps count, and RV type to find the perfect match. Pro tip for a cheap RV rental Ely: book midweek in late May, early June, or after Labor Day to dodge the BWCA permit-season premium, and look for hosts who include generator hours or a starter propane tank. Booking three months ahead also locks in the best summer rates.

Good news: your everyday driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ely, Minnesota. The State of Minnesota does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels used recreationally. To book on RVezy, you simply need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and the platform handles ID verification securely during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) for under $25 and you're ready to roll. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the approval happens, often within a few hours of booking.

Yes, every RV rental in Ely, MN booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV, so you can focus on paddling Moose Lake instead of worrying about a stray branch on a forest road. During checkout you choose the coverage tier that fits your comfort level, with higher tiers lowering your financial responsibility if something goes wrong. Roadside help is just a phone call away, which is real reassurance when you are miles up Highway 1 near Birch Lake. It is peace of mind built right into the booking.

You can book your Ely RV trip with confidence: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and it includes a full money-back grace period right after booking. That means if your plans for the Boundary Waters shift, a fishing partner backs out, or a Minnesota blizzard rolls in, you have a clear, predictable path to a refund based on how far out from your trip you are. RVezy also considers unexpected events like natural disasters when reviewing cancellations. Once your booking is confirmed, the exact policy details are available in your trip dashboard, so there are no surprises and no host-by-host fine print to chase down.

Absolutely, and Ely is one of the most dog-friendly basecamps in Minnesota. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Ely options exist on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome dogs. Once you are on the road, leashed pets are allowed at Bear Head Lake State Park, Fall Lake Campground, Fenske Lake Campground, and South Kawishiwi River Recreation Area, plus most hiking trails in Superior National Forest. Dogs are also permitted in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness when leashed or under control, which is rare for designated wilderness areas. Pro tip: bring a tie-out cable, secure food storage, and tick prevention, as ticks are active May through September around the Iron Range.

Yes, RV delivery Ely is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drop the motorhome or travel trailer at Fall Lake Campground, Birch Lake, South Kawishiwi River Recreation Area, Bear Head Lake State Park, or even a private cabin driveway on Moose Lake Road. They will level the RV, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system so you can step in and start your trip. Use the Delivery filter when browsing listings, then message the host with your campsite number. Many Ely-area hosts offer delivery within roughly 15 to 25 miles, with fees and free-delivery radius varying by host.

For most Ely RV trip itineraries, 100 to 150 miles per day is plenty, since the best stuff is close by. The sweet spot for an RV rental in Ely, MN runs from late May through early October, with mid-June through August being the prime canoe and camping window. Daytime highs average 70°F to 78°F in July (the warmest month), nights dip to a comfy 50°F to 55°F, and you'll enjoy up to 16 hours of daylight. September brings cool nights, fewer bugs, and incredible fall color across the Superior National Forest's birch and aspen. Insider tip: black flies peak in late May to mid-June and mosquitoes thrive in July, so plan for screen rooms, head nets, or a screened RV awning. Winter RV rentals are limited because most campgrounds close by mid-October.

You're in a great spot, Ely is actually one of the easier places for a first time renting an RV. Highway 169 and Highway 1 into town are wide, two-lane roads with light traffic outside of summer weekends, and most lake campgrounds are an easy back-in rather than a tight forest squeeze. Every RVezy host walks you through an in-person orientation at pickup covering the propane, generator, slide-outs, fresh water, and waste tanks, and you can message them mid-trip with questions. Pro tip: book a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer (under 25 feet) for your first trip, and consider a host who offers delivery so you can skip the towing learning curve entirely.

You are not on your own, every RVezy booking comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with the renter protection plan. One phone call dispatches help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, mechanical breakdowns, and towing, even on remote stretches like the Echo Trail or Fernberg Road heading toward Lake One. Cell coverage can drop past Kawishiwi Lodge, so download offline maps and save the RVezy support number before you leave Ely. Your host is also a quick text away and often knows the local mechanics. Pro tip: top off fuel in Ely itself before heading deep into the Superior National Forest, because the next gas pumps can be 30+ miles away.

Many RV trips from Ely venture toward Ontario, but cross-border travel depends entirely on the individual host and the protection package's coverage zone. Mexico is never permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. For Canada, message the host directly before booking, some Ely-area owners allow trips to Thunder Bay, Quetico Provincial Park, or up the Trans-Canada Highway, while others keep their RV inside Minnesota. If approved, you'll also need a passport, proof of rental authorization, and to declare the vehicle at the Pigeon River or International Falls border crossings. Most renters find that staying on the US side, exploring Voyageurs National Park and the North Shore, is more than enough adventure.

Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but the good news is Ely trips are short-mileage by design. Expect 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 mpg for a Class A, and roughly 12 to 18 mpg for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Minnesota gas prices typically track near or slightly below the US national average, with diesel running about 30 to 50 cents higher. A typical 4-night, 250-mile loop from Ely to Bear Head Lake and Voyageurs and back usually costs $90 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Ely or Tower-Soudan, prices climb the closer you get to remote outfitter posts.

For summer weekends in the Ely area, book your campground the same day you book your RV, ideally four to six months out. Superior National Forest sites like Fall Lake, Fenske Lake, and South Kawishiwi, plus Bear Head Lake State Park, all open reservations through Recreation.gov (federal) or the Minnesota DNR reservation system (state parks), with a rolling six-month window. Boundary Waters overnight permits open in late January and the popular Moose Lake and Lake One entry points sell out within hours. Insider tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Tuesday) often have last-minute openings even in July, and a few first-come-first-served sites pop up after Labor Day at Fenske Lake.

Driving an RV around Ely is refreshingly low-stress compared to a metro RV trip. Highway 169 from Virginia and Eveleth and Highway 1 from the south are paved, two-lane roads with gentle grades and very little traffic. The main things to watch for are wildlife (deer at dusk are common, and moose can cross near Isabella), gravel forest service roads off the Echo Trail and Fernberg Road that can get washboarded, and sudden afternoon thunderstorms in July. Winter and shoulder-season travelers should watch for black ice from October through April. Insider tip: avoid driving the narrower stretches of the Echo Trail in a Class A over 30 feet, a Class C, campervan, or travel trailer handles those scenic side roads much better.

You'll find a healthy mix of options around Ely. Full hookups (water, electric, sewer) are available at private resorts like Silver Rapids Lodge, Canoe Country Campground, and Timber Trail Lodge on Moose Lake Road. State park sites at Bear Head Lake offer electric hookups, modern restrooms, hot showers, and a sanitary dump station. Forest Service campgrounds like Fall Lake and South Kawishiwi have electric sites plus vault toilets, drinking water spigots, and dump stations, while Fenske Lake is more rustic (no hookups, just water and vault toilets). Where to dump and fill water in a pinch: Bear Head Lake State Park's dump station and the City of Ely municipal dump near the public works yard are reliable stops.

Most motorhome rental Ely listings on RVezy come fully outfitted for the Northwoods. Expect a real bed (or two), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, a furnace for cool September nights, roof AC for July, a propane tank, and seatbelts for every passenger. Class C and Class A motorhomes typically include a generator, while campervan rental Ely options often feature solar plus a house battery, which is perfect for boondocking near Birch Lake. TVs and WiFi boosters vary by listing, just know cell service drops past about 10 miles north of town. Each listing page spells out exactly what's included so you can match the rig to your trip.

Ely hosts offer some genuinely useful add-ons. Common options include camping kits (chairs, table, outdoor rug) for around $40 to $75 per trip, kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils ($25 to $60), bedding and linens ($25 to $50 per bed), generator hours, extra propane, bike racks, and Boundary Waters portage packs. Many hosts also rent canoe roof racks, which is huge if you're skipping the outfitter. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Ely, Babbitt, Tower, or Winton, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to RV rental with unlimited mileage, so compare a few listings. Insider tip: ask about a late return on Sunday to squeeze in one more sunset over Shagawa Lake.

Payment is simple and secure: when you book an RV rental in Ely, MN, RVezy charges your card through the platform, so there is no cash, e-transfer, or off-platform payment with the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card before pickup, with the amount set by the host, and it is released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any hiccups: take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the fueling and dump-station instructions, and report anything unusual through the RVezy app right away. Keeping everything in-platform keeps both you and your host fully protected.

Yes, winter RV adventures are possible in Ely, though the inventory is smaller than summer. Look for four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and shore-power capability so you can plug in at a winter-open site like Timber Trail Lodge on Farm Lake. Daytime highs from mid-November to late March often sit between 10°F and 25°F, with overnight lows that can dip to -20°F, so reliable heat is non-negotiable. Filter for four-season RVs on RVezy and message the host about cold-weather prep, skirting, and antifreeze in the water lines. Pro tip: pair your winter family RV trip Ely with the Ely Winter Festival in early February or a guided dog-sledding day, it's unforgettable.
