Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Smithville, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Smithville, TX?
Good news: an RV rental in Smithville, TX is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Lost Pines region. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $140 per night, Class C motorhomes range from about $175 to $275 per night, and luxury Class A coaches run higher depending on season. Smithville sits along Highway 71 between Austin and Houston, so weekday bookings outside spring wildflower season and SXSW are the sweet spot for cheap RV rental Smithville deals. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy so you can park-and-stay at Buescher State Park without towing, and you'll often save on fuel and mileage fees too.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescherDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Smithville, TX?
Great news for first-timers: your regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Smithville for almost every motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer on RVezy. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class A or B license for personal RVs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, which is well above the typical Class C motorhome or travel trailer you'll book here. You must be 25 or older to rent on RVezy, and identity is verified through the platform when you book. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're ready to roll east on Highway 71.
dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/classes-driver-licensesIs RV rental in Smithville covered by protection and roadside assistance?
Yes, and that is one of the best parts of booking an RV rental in Smithville through RVezy. Every booking includes a renter protection plan that covers physical damage to the RV, plus 24/7 roadside assistance for issues like flat tires, lockouts, or a dead battery on a country road outside Smithville. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, so you decide how much coverage you want. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides real financial protection and peace of mind. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave the Buescher State Park entrance off FM 153, where cell signal can get patchy under the Lost Pines.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Smithville RV trip plans change?
Booking your Smithville RV trip is low-risk. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. Final terms depend on how far in advance you cancel. You will see the exact policy in your booking confirmation and on the RVezy Help Center, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: book early for October's Festival of Lights kickoff and spring bluebonnet season at Buescher State Park, then relax knowing flexibility is built into your reservation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Smithville?
Absolutely, and Smithville is a wonderfully dog-friendly basecamp. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Smithville that hosts have approved for furry passengers, and message the owner if you have a larger breed or multiple pets. Once parked at Buescher State Park or Bastrop State Park, leashed dogs (six-foot leash maximum) are welcome on hiking trails through the Lost Pines, though they are not allowed inside park buildings. Pro tip: pack a cooling mat for summer trips, because asphalt pads off Highway 71 get scorching from June through September.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescherCan a host deliver the RV to my campsite in Smithville?
Yes, RV delivery in Smithville is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV straight to your reserved site at Buescher State Park, Colorado Landing RV Park in nearby La Grange, or The Ville RV Park in town, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. You skip the stress of towing on Highway 71 and just show up with your groceries. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts who offer this service, and confirm the delivery fee and mileage with your host before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Smithville%2C%20TexasHow far can I travel on a Smithville RV trip, and what about mileage?
You have plenty of room to roam on a Smithville RV trip. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, with options ranging from 100 free miles per night to RV rental with unlimited mileage on select listings, which is ideal for longer Texas loops. From Smithville you are about 42 miles east of Austin, 140 miles west of Houston, 110 miles to San Antonio, and about 200 miles to the Texas Gulf Coast at Galveston. Check the mileage section on any listing before booking and message the host if you are planning a longer route. Pro tip: a Hill Country loop through Fredericksburg, Luckenbach, and Lockhart barbecue country pairs perfectly with unlimited-mileage listings.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Smithville%2C%20TexasWhere are the best campgrounds near Smithville, TX for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Smithville. Buescher State Park (100 Park Road 1E) is the local crown jewel with 1,017 acres of Lost Pines forest, a 30-acre fishing lake, and concrete RV pads with water and electric hookups, starting around $20 to $25 per night. Bastrop State Park sits just 12 miles west via the scenic Park Road 1C. The Ville RV Park offers 77 gated, gravel-paved full-hookup sites right in town, and Colorado Landing RV Park in La Grange (20 miles east) has long, tree-shaded full-hookup sites by the river. Insider tip: enter Buescher from FM 153 in Smithville, not the GPS-suggested back route, because Park Road 1C has tight curves and low clearance.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescherWhen is the best time to visit Smithville, TX in an RV?
Smithville is genuinely a year-round RV destination, but the sweet spot is mid-March through May and again from October through early December. Spring brings 70°F to 85°F days, blooming bluebonnets along Highway 71, and the legendary wildflower drives through Bastrop County. Fall offers 65°F to 80°F afternoons, perfect for hiking the Pine Gulch Trail at Buescher State Park. Summers (June through September) regularly hit 94°F to 97°F with high humidity, so book an RV with reliable air conditioning and plan early-morning activities. Winters are mild (40°F to 60°F highs) with rare freezes, making December a quiet, affordable time to snag a campervan rental Smithville deal. Pro tip: avoid SXSW weekends in mid-March if you want to dodge Austin-area traffic spillover.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Smithville&state=TX&site=EWX&textField1=30.0077&textField2=-97.1566</I'm first time renting an RV. Will I get help in Smithville?
You'll be in great hands. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation and walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water tanks, the awning, slide-outs, the generator, and how to dump and refill at Buescher State Park's onsite dump station. Many Smithville hosts also send a digital pre-trip checklist and stay reachable by text throughout your trip. If you want to skip driving entirely, choose delivery and your host will set everything up at your campsite. Pro tip: book a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 28 feet for your first time, they handle easily on Highway 71 and back roads like FM 153, and you'll feel like a pro by day two.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescherWhat if something goes wrong with my RV in Smithville?
You are never on your own. Every booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 71, a dead battery at the Buescher State Park lake loop, or need a tow back into Bastrop County, help is one phone call away. Your host is also typically reachable by text for quick troubleshooting like resetting the GFCI on the AC or relighting a water heater pilot. For anything beyond that, the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Save both numbers in your phone before leaving the Smithville pickup, since cell signal can thin out in the Lost Pines.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are good RV road trips from Smithville, TX?
An RV road trip from Smithville puts most of Central Texas within easy reach. Head about 42 miles west on Highway 71 to Austin for live music and food trucks, or continue into the Hill Country to Fredericksburg's wineries and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area (roughly 2.5 hours). Drive about 140 miles east on 71 and I-10 to Houston, or roll roughly 110 miles south to San Antonio's River Walk and Mission Trail. For a longer trip, Big Bend National Park is about an 8-hour haul west, perfect for a week-long loop. Cross-border travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage, so plan your route to stay stateside. Pro tip: the 12-mile Park Road 1C between Buescher and Bastrop State Parks is one of the prettiest short drives in Texas.
txdot.gov/What kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Smithville is a budget-friendly fuel base. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class C motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a campervan, and 12 to 16 MPG for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Texas typically has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, and you'll find easy diesel and gasoline pumps right in town at the Buc-ee's-adjacent stations along Highway 71 in Bastrop, 12 miles west. For a 4-night, 300-mile trip in a Class C, budget around $120 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Bastrop or Smithville before heading deeper into the Hill Country, where prices climb noticeably west of Highway 281.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Smithville?
For Buescher State Park and Bastrop State Park, book as soon as your dates are firm. Texas Parks and Wildlife opens reservations up to five months in advance through the official reservation system, and weekend RV sites here fill quickly from March through May and during fall hunting season. Private parks like The Ville RV Park, Colorado Landing RV Park in La Grange, and Lazy J RV Ranch usually take reservations 3 to 6 months out and offer more last-minute availability. Pro tip: weekday nights at Buescher are often wide open even a week out, and you'll pay around $20 to $25 for a water-and-electric site with concrete pads under the Lost Pines canopy.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescherWhat are driving conditions like around Smithville, TX?
Driving an RV around Smithville is refreshingly easy. Highway 71 is a wide, well-maintained four-lane divided highway connecting you to Austin and Houston, and local roads like FM 153 and Loop 230 are flat-to-gently-rolling with light traffic. The main thing to watch is summer thunderstorms (June through September) that can bring sudden downpours and brief flash flooding in low-water crossings along the Colorado River basin. Avoid Park Road 1C as your entry into Buescher State Park; that scenic 12-mile route has tight curves and low tree clearance that can scrape tall RV roofs. Pro tip: deer are active at dawn and dusk along FM 535 and FM 153, so slow down in those windows.
txdot.gov/What hookups and dump stations will I find at Smithville-area campgrounds?
You'll find solid infrastructure throughout the area. Buescher State Park offers concrete-pad RV sites with 30/50-amp electric and water hookups plus an onsite dump station, hot showers, and flush restrooms. The Ville RV Park provides full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp) on all 77 gravel pads. Colorado Landing RV Park in La Grange has full hookups with extra-long pull-throughs for big rigs. Most private parks include Wi-Fi (with varying speed), and Buescher has potable water spigots at every loop. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump at Buescher's station before heading into Bastrop State Park, where some sites are water-only, and you'll have one less chore mid-trip.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescherWhat features and amenities come with a motorhome rental Smithville?
Most motorhome rental Smithville listings on RVezy come fully equipped for comfortable Texas camping. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds, a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, and oven, plus a wet bath or full bathroom with hot shower. Air conditioning is essentially non-negotiable from May through October here, so confirm it's working at pickup. Many rigs also include a generator (a must if you're boondocking at a friend's ranch), seatbelts for every passenger, smart TVs, and outdoor speakers. Family RV trip Smithville bookings often include kid-friendly extras like board games and outdoor mats. Pro tip: ask your host if their RV's awning has wind sensors; thunderstorm gusts can roll through Bastrop County fast.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescherWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Smithville offer a great mix of add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include camping chairs and tables ($5 to $15 per trip), bedding and linen packages ($25 to $50), generators, BBQ grills, kayaks (handy for Buescher's lake), kid bike racks, and even pre-stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Smithville, but delivery to Buescher State Park, The Ville RV Park, or a private property is widely available for a flat fee plus mileage. Mileage policies vary, so check whether you've got 100 miles per night, 200 miles per night, or unlimited. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a propane fill at booking is often cheaper than adding extras later.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/buescherHow do payments and security deposits work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy's platform when you book, never directly to the host, and you can use a major credit card with everything itemized: nightly rate, protection plan, taxes, delivery, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (amount set by the host, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on RV class) and is released after your host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid issues, do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and dropoff in Smithville, note any existing scratches, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels you started with. Pro tip: empty the black and grey tanks at Buescher State Park's dump station before returning to avoid dumping fees.
