Campgrounds near Alamo, California
Alamo sits in the San Ramon Valley in central Contra Costa County, with Mount Diablo rising directly to the east and the Carquinez Strait shoreline a short drive north. The combination puts two very different RV experiences within roughly an hour of town: state-park camping on the mountain, and full-hookup parks along the I-80 corridor near Vallejo and Benicia.
For mountain camping, Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park is the closest option, sitting at the lower elevations of the park near the South Gate entrance. Live Oak Campground occupies a wooded glen at roughly 1,450 feet elevation, making it the lowest of Mount Diablo State Park's drive-in campgrounds, located about a mile above the South Gate Entrance Station off South Gate Road, with access to Rock City's sandstone formations and the park's trail network. The campground has 22 sites, each with a picnic table and fire ring.
Closer to the water, Benicia State Recreational Area, Tradewinds RV Park, Rio Viento RV Park, and Vallejo RV Park give RV travelers paved access, hookups, and easy freeway connections to San Francisco, Napa, and the East Bay.
Things to do near Alamo
Mount Diablo is the centerpiece for outdoor activity. Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park gives quick access to Rock City's sandstone formations and the park's wider trail network, with the drive to the 3,849-foot summit delivering wide views of the Bay Area on clear days. The lower slopes draw road cyclists on weekends.
North of Alamo, Benicia State Recreational Area protects shoreline along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait, covering marsh, grassy hillsides, and rocky beaches. The park's roughly 2.5 miles of road and bike paths are used by cyclists, runners, walkers, equestrians, and roller skaters, and picnicking, bird watching, and fishing are also popular. Dogs must be on leash, and the marshland on Dillon's Point is a favorite fishing spot. Day trips to Napa wineries, the Vallejo ferry to San Francisco, and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom are all within roughly 30 minutes of the shoreline parks.

The Alamo area follows a Mediterranean pattern: warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Nearby Walnut Creek sees summer highs around 84°F and lows around 55°F, winter highs near 58°F and lows near 38°F, with most rainfall arriving between November and March. Snow is essentially nonexistent at valley elevations, though Mount Diablo's summit can pick up a light dusting in cold storms.
Spring is the peak window on Mount Diablo. Wildflowers bloom across the grasslands, temperatures are mild, and trails are in good shape after the winter rains. Summer brings hot, dry conditions and elevated fire risk on the mountain's exposed slopes, with afternoon temperatures that can climb well past comfortable hiking range. Fall brings cooler air, clearer long-distance views, and fewer crowds.
Weekend reservations at Mount Diablo are most competitive from spring through fall. Live Oak is open year-round and popular with weekend hikers, so Friday and Saturday nights book out quickly in spring and fall. The lowland RV parks near Vallejo and Benicia operate year-round and are less seasonal.

How to book near Alamo
Mount Diablo State Park sites are booked through ReserveCalifornia. Reservations are available up to six months in advance of the arrival date, and the system handles Live Oak and Juniper campgrounds plus the park's group sites. To book, visit the ReserveCalifornia website, search for Mount Diablo, choose an arrival date and length of stay, then view available sites and amenities; an account is required before the first booking. Check-in is at 2:00 PM and check-out is at noon, and park gates close at sunset and reopen at 8:00 AM.
Benicia State Recreational Area works differently. Three Enroute campsites are available for overnight stays on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations possible, and camping is limited to motorhomes or vehicles with trailers that are fully self-contained. Tents are not permitted. Tradewinds RV Park, Rio Viento RV Park, and Vallejo RV Park accept direct reservations through their own offices or booking platforms.
What to expect
Sites on Mount Diablo are rustic. Live Oak has the small, densely packed feel typical of older state-park campgrounds, with less privacy than newer facilities, and the campground sits off the main park road. There are no RV hookups inside the state park, and the access road climbs steep grades with tight curves, so larger rigs should check length limits before booking. Water availability can be limited due to drought conditions affecting the mountain's spring-fed source, so bringing additional water is recommended.
The lowland parks are the opposite: paved, level, and built for big rigs. Tradewinds RV Park offers 78 RV sites of varying sizes, all with level gravel pads, full hook-ups, and 30-50 amp service, with pull-through sites that can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet. Expect some freeway noise at the Vallejo and Benicia properties given their proximity to I-80 and I-780.

Plan around commuter traffic, typically 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM, especially on I-680 and through the Caldecott Tunnel. Downtown Danville has narrow streets and roundabouts, so RV delivery can be a stress free option. South Park Road on Mount Diablo has tight curves and is not recommended for large motorhomes.
