Campgrounds near Alto
Alto is a small community adjacent to Mill Valley in southern Marin County, California, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and about ten miles from downtown San Francisco. The area sits between Richardson Bay and the eastern slopes of Mount Tamalpais, putting RV travelers within minutes of redwood canyons, bay shoreline, and the Marin Headlands.
RV-specific lodging in the immediate area is limited and books out fast, so visitors typically choose between full-hookup commercial parks close to Highway 101 and tent-oriented public campgrounds in the surrounding state parks. Closest commercial options include Golden Gate Trailer Park and Marin Park, with Marin RV Park, Novato RV Park, and Candlestick RV Park rounding out the choices within an easy drive. Each offers a different trade-off between proximity to San Francisco, freeway noise, site size, and access to transit. Public camping in Mount Tamalpais State Park and China Camp State Park is tent-focused and largely walk-in, but it is useful to know about for travelers planning a mixed RV-and-tent itinerary.
Things to do near Alto
Mount Tamalpais State Park is the closest large recreation area, with redwood groves, oak woodlands, and grasslands cut by an extensive network of trails. Day-trip targets include Muir Woods National Monument, the Dipsea Trail, the East Peak summit, and Stinson Beach on the coast. The Marin Headlands offer cliff-top viewpoints over the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific. To the north, China Camp State Park preserves oak woodland and tidal salt marsh on San Pablo Bay, with a historic Chinese shrimp-fishing village and miles of multi-use trails popular with mountain bikers. Several RV parks in the area sit within walking distance of a ferry or bus line, which makes a car-free day trip into San Francisco practical for families.

The Bay Area runs on a Mediterranean climate, so the camping calendar is shaped by a wet winter and an arid summer rather than by snow. Most of the annual rainfall lands between November and March, with December and February typically among the wettest months. Storms can close trails, trigger road issues on coastal Highway 1, and saturate unpaved campground loops, so winter trips favor paved, full-hookup RV parks over rustic sites.
Spring brings wildflowers and waterfalls on Mount Tamalpais, with mild temperatures and steadily drying trails through May. Summer is the peak booking season; sites at popular commercial parks and at Steep Ravine on Mount Tam fill months ahead, and coastal fog is common along the headlands and Stinson Beach even when inland valleys are warm. Fall is often the clearest, warmest stretch, with September the warmest month on average, but it also overlaps California's peak wildfire and Red Flag season, which can trigger park closures.

Angel 😇 Life Saver ⛑️ Great Communication 📲📞 Informative 📚 PUNCTUAL ⏳️ Just a few words to describe this wonderful Host. When my prior host backed out and canceled on me the day of (There was no communication up til 48hrs before trip, and stopped again the morning of. I reached out for clarification and location, no response! Moments later Rveezy tells me the host is no longer comfortable with accommodating us) Evgeniy not only responed within 5min of me reachout out, but had us out and on the road to enjoy out trip within an hour. The vehicle is perfect, clean and easy to function. We had never driven or worked an RV before but his quick rundown and eargeness to answer any questions helped put out minds at ease. He is so kind, professonal, and absolutely Amazing 🤩. We will definitely rent from him again despite our extra charges for not having time to thoroughly clean out and fill up; but that was a very small price to pay for what we would have missed if he hadn't come to help us out of a pickle. How to book campgrounds near Alto
Commercial RV parks in the area, including Golden Gate Trailer Park, Marin Park, Marin RV Park, Novato RV Park, and Candlestick RV Park, are booked directly through each park, by phone or website. Summer weekends and holidays often sell out weeks in advance, so reserve early and confirm length and slide-out limits when booking. Public campgrounds in Mount Tamalpais State Park and China Camp State Park are booked through ReserveCalifornia, with a rolling window that opens six months ahead of the arrival date at 8 a.m. Pacific. The popular Steep Ravine cabins on Mount Tam are allocated through a separate reservation drawing that opens applications up to eight months ahead. Pantoll and Bootjack in Mount Tam are first-come, first-served and do not accept RVs. Back Ranch Meadows at China Camp is walk-in tent only.
What to expect
Marin County is dense, hilly, and built around narrow roads, so large rigs should plan routes carefully and avoid Panoramic Highway and the coast road in big units. Commercial RV parks near Alto tend to be compact, with gravel sites set close together and an emphasis on location over amenities; some travelers describe them as parking-lot style rather than wooded. Most offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, and quick freeway access. Cell service is generally good across southern Marin but drops in canyons on Mount Tam. Coastal fog can move in fast on summer afternoons, so pack layers even when the forecast looks warm. Dogs are restricted on most Mount Tamalpais trails, so factor pet rules into the day plan.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Alto, CA?
RV rental in Alto, CA is more affordable than many travelers expect for Marin County. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $180 per night, campervans average $150 to $250, and Class C motorhomes range from $200 to $350 nightly. Weekly bookings often unlock 10 to 20 percent discounts from hosts, and shoulder-season trips in March, April, or October are the smartest way to find a cheap RV rental Alto travelers love. You'll get more RV for your budget.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my Alto RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Alto booked through RVezy comes with a built-in renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. During the booking process you choose your level of coverage (not the host), so you can pick the option that matches your comfort level for collision and damage protection. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle and gives you real financial peace of mind for your Marin County adventure. Pro tip: review the coverage options before you finalize payment, and save the walkthrough video your host shares at pickup. You'll have confidence the moment you turn the key.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my RV rental in Alto?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. If plans change or a natural event like a Northern California wildfire affects your trip, RVezy's support team works with you on options. Cancellation terms depend on how far out you are from your trip start date, so the earlier you act, the more flexibility you have. Pro tip: book your Alto RV rental as soon as your dates are firm and message the host with any timing questions, so you still have the grace-period buffer to make adjustments.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Alto?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Alto options are plentiful since Marin is one of the most dog-loving counties in California. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who welcome your pup, and message them about any deposit or cleaning fee specifics before you book. Once you're on the road, you'll find Marin is a tail-wagging paradise: Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands allows off-leash dogs, and the Bay Trail through Bothin Marsh (right next to Alto) is a beautiful leashed walk. Pro tip: pack a towel and a collapsible water bowl, because your dog will absolutely want to splash at Muir Beach after a redwoods hike.
nps.gov/goga/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan a host deliver the RV to me in Alto?
Yes, RV delivery Alto travelers love is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're nervous about driving a motorhome through Marin's narrow roads or over the Golden Gate Bridge. Many Alto and Mill Valley hosts will deliver the RV directly to your campground, your driveway, or even to popular spots like Olema Campground or Samuel P. Taylor State Park. They'll set up the awning, level the rig, connect hookups, and walk you through every system. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it and what the delivery radius and fee look like. Pro tip: delivery is gold for first-time renters because you skip city driving entirely and step into a fully ready campsite.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=471How far can I drive on my Alto RV trip?
You can cover serious ground on an Alto RV trip thanks to its sweet spot at the foot of Highway 101. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and several offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for road-trippers. Popular drives from Alto include Point Reyes National Seashore (about 30 miles northwest), Napa Valley wine country (around 50 miles northeast), Yosemite National Park (about 200 miles east), Big Sur via Highway 1 (roughly 170 miles south), and Lake Tahoe (about 215 miles east). Pro tip: if you're planning a longer loop like Highway 1 to Big Sur, filter for unlimited-mileage listings during your search and message the host to confirm before booking.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/route-informationWhere can I camp with my RV near Alto, CA?
You're spoiled for choice with best campgrounds near Alto offering everything from redwoods to ocean views. Marin RV Park in Greenbrae (about 6 miles north) has full hookups and a Larkspur Ferry walk to San Francisco. Olema Campground near Point Reyes (about 25 miles) is a peaceful base for seashore exploring. Samuel P. Taylor State Park (about 20 miles) has shaded sites under towering redwoods. Mount Tamalpais State Park's Pantoll Campground is just a short drive into the hills above Alto. For coastal magic, China Camp State Park (about 12 miles in San Rafael) offers bay-view sites. Pro tip: California State Parks sites release on ReserveCalifornia exactly six months ahead at 8 AM Pacific, so set a calendar reminder.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=471When is the best time for RV camping in Alto?
Alto's Mediterranean microclimate means you can rent an RV in Alto nearly year-round, but the sweet spots are May through October when daytime highs sit comfortably in the 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit range and rain is rare. September and October are an insider's secret: warm, dry, fog-free, and the summer crowds at Muir Woods and Stinson Beach thin out. Winters are mild (50s by day, 40s at night) but bring most of the area's rain between December and March. Pro tip: pack layers even in July, because the famous Marin fog (locals call it Karl) often rolls in over Mount Tamalpais by late afternoon, dropping temperatures 15 degrees in an hour. A hoodie is non-negotiable.
weather.gov/mtr/I'm a first-time renter, will I be okay driving an RV from Alto?
You'll do great, and you won't be doing it alone. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, and the dump process, so first time renting an RV in Marin feels manageable from minute one. Hosts are also reachable by message throughout your trip, and RVezy's 24/7 support is always a tap away. If Bay Area driving feels intimidating, choose a smaller Class B campervan or travel trailer, or simply book a host who offers delivery so the RV is waiting at your campsite. Pro tip: avoid driving 101 through Mill Valley between 4 and 7 PM on weekdays. Leave early or after dinner and the roads open right up.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if my RV breaks down during my Alto trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you have a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or mechanical issue anywhere from the Golden Gate Bridge to Point Reyes, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also typically just a text away and knows the RV inside out, so quick questions (like how to relight the water heater) often get solved in minutes. Pro tip: program both the RVezy roadside number and your host's number into your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap photos of the RV's exterior at pickup so any pre-existing details are documented. Then relax and enjoy the redwoods.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Alto RV rental into Oregon, Nevada, or Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Alto across state lines into Oregon, Nevada, or Arizona is welcomed by most hosts, and many guests use Marin as a launch pad for Pacific Northwest or Southwest loops. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and confirmation that insurance coverage applies, so message the host directly from the listing before you book. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection plan does not extend across that border. Popular multi-state routes from Alto include Highway 101 north to the Oregon Coast (about 380 miles to the border) and I-80 east to Reno and Lake Tahoe (about 215 miles).
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an Alto RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your trip budget, and California gas prices run higher than the national average (typically $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon around Marin in 2026). Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A rigs land around 6 to 10 MPG. For a 300-mile round trip to Point Reyes and back, expect roughly $80 to $180 in fuel depending on the rig. Pro tip: fill up in Novato or Petaluma on Highway 101 before heading west, since prices climb at the coastal stations near Stinson Beach and Point Reyes. Costco in San Rafael (members only) usually has the cheapest diesel and gas in southern Marin.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Alto?
For the most popular spots, book the moment your dates are firm. California State Parks (Samuel P. Taylor, Mount Tamalpais, China Camp) open reservations exactly six months ahead on ReserveCalifornia.com at 8 AM Pacific, and summer weekends often sell out within minutes. National Park Service campgrounds like those in Point Reyes book through Recreation.gov on a similar six-month rolling window. Private parks like Marin RV Park and Olema Campground typically take reservations 9 to 12 months out. Pro tip: if you missed the window, check ReserveCalifornia daily around 9 AM. Cancellations pop up constantly, and that's how locals snag last-minute weekend sites at Steep Ravine and Pantoll all summer long.
recreation.gov/What are local driving conditions like around Alto?
Driving around Alto is easier than most people expect because the town sits right off Highway 101 with quick freeway access in both directions. The trickier moments are the winding climbs on Panoramic Highway up Mount Tamalpais and the curves of Highway 1 between Muir Beach and Stinson Beach, where larger Class A and C motorhomes should drive slowly and use pullouts. Watch for cyclists on Camino Alto and Miller Avenue, and avoid the Golden Gate Bridge during weekday commutes (7 to 9 AM southbound, 4 to 7 PM northbound). Pro tip: the bridge has a southbound toll that's billed electronically to your host's account, so confirm during pickup how toll reimbursement works. Then enjoy one of the most scenic drives in America.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Alto?
Marin County campgrounds range from full-hookup luxury to back-to-nature simplicity, so pick what fits your style. Marin RV Park in Greenbrae and San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica offer full water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric hookups plus Wi-Fi and laundry. California State Parks like Samuel P. Taylor have potable water spigots, flush toilets, hot showers, and dump stations but no individual site hookups. Point Reyes campgrounds are hike-in only and not RV-suitable. For dumping and freshwater fills near Alto, Marin RV Park sells day-use dump access, and the Mill Valley Sanitary District also offers public options. Pro tip: arrive at hookup sites with empty tanks and a full freshwater tank so you're not scrambling on day one.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=29257What amenities come inside RVs rented in Alto?
Motorhome rental Alto options are well-equipped for comfort. Class C motorhomes and Class A rigs typically include a queen bed, dinette and over-cab sleeping (up to 6 to 8 sleepers), full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, furnace, generator, and seatbelts for every passenger. Travel trailers offer similar interiors minus the cab. Campervan rental Alto choices (Class B Sprinters, VW Westfalias) are nimble and stylish but more compact, usually sleeping 2 to 4 with a smaller kitchen and wet bath. Many listings include Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor TVs, and bike racks as add-ons. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host with any must-haves like a French press or extra bedding before you book.
energy.gov/energysaver/recreational-vehicle-rv-energy-efficiencyWhat add-ons and pickup details should I know about?
Hosts in Alto offer a great range of add-ons to customize your trip: bike racks, kayaks and paddleboards, generators, extra propane, camp chairs and tables, kitchen kits, linen packages, and Wi-Fi hotspots are all common, usually priced $10 to $50 per item or per trip. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Alto, Mill Valley, or nearby Marin towns, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough where you'll learn every system. Mileage policies vary: most include 100 to 150 free miles per night with overage at $0.30 to $0.45 per mile, and some offer unlimited mileage packages. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you're heading to off-grid spots like Steep Ravine, where there are no hookups but the Pacific views are unbeatable.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=29257How does payment and the security deposit work for an Alto RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay directly through RVezy when you book, so there is no cash exchange with the host at pickup. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment during your trip and released back to your card after a smooth return, typically within a few days. Choosing a higher protection plan option at checkout can reduce your out-of-pocket exposure for accidental damage. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround photo and video at pickup AND drop-off, including the roof, undercarriage, and interior. Most deposit disputes come down to documentation, and a two-minute video saves headaches.
