Campgrounds and RV parks near Alum Rock, CA

Alum Rock Park has about 13 miles of trails along Penitencia Creek and up to the South Rim and North Rim ridges, with picnic areas, playgrounds, mineral-spring grottos, and a small museum on the canyon floor. The park connects into a longer Penitencia Creek regional trail toward Coyote Creek. South of the city, Henry W Coe State Park opens up over 87,000 acres of the Diablo Range with more than 250 miles of trails and ranch roads for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and backpacking; wildflower displays peak in March and April. Anderson Lake and Coyote Lake add boating and fishing options, and the Morgan Hill area is a base for touring Santa Cruz Mountain wineries. Downtown San Jose museums, sports venues, and the Lick Observatory road up Mount Hamilton round out a typical itinerary.

The Alum Rock area has a Mediterranean climate: long, dry summers and a cool, wet season from late fall into early spring. Most annual rain falls between November and March, while June through August is essentially rainless. Mid-summer afternoon highs in San Jose typically run in the low 80s Fahrenheit, with overnight lows in the upper 50s, and offshore-flow days can push readings well above 90. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Spring brings wildflowers across the Diablo Range foothills, and trails in Henry W Coe State Park are at their best in March and April. Summer is reliable for sunshine but hot in the inland canyons and can trigger fire restrictions that ban wood and charcoal fires; check current rules before lighting any fire ring. Winter storms can trigger landslides and trail closures in the foothills, and several trails in Alum Rock Park have been closed at times for erosion and tree work, so confirm access before driving in.

Expect a mix of polished resort-style parks near the highway and primitive public-land camping in the hills. Coyote Valley RV Resort offers paved pads, full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, a pool, clubhouse, dog runs, laundry, and an on-site store, and accommodates larger rigs; nearby rail and highway noise can be audible at night. Coe Ranch Campground at Henry W Coe State Park has 20 drive-in sites with tables and fire rings on an open ridge, plus potable water, but no hookups and limited facilities, and the access road up E. Dunne Avenue is narrow and winding with about 13 miles of climbing from US-101. Cell service is reliable in the Coyote Valley but spotty inside Coe. Mountain lions, deer, coyotes, and skunks are present, so store food and trash securely.
