Campgrounds and RV parks near Angels, CA

New Melones Lake covers 12,500 surface acres and supports boating, water skiing, wakeboarding, fishing, swimming, kayaking, hiking, biking, and horseback riding, with a full-service marina at Glory Hole. Shoreline trails at Glory Hole and Tuttletown serve hikers, mountain bikers, and riders. Calaveras Big Trees State Park preserves two groves of giant sequoias in the North Grove and South Grove, about 35 minutes east on Highway 4. Underground tours run at Moaning Cavern in Vallecito and Mercer Caverns near Murphys, both within roughly 20 miles. Downtown Angels Camp offers the Angels Camp Museum and Carriage House, while nearby Columbia State Historic Park and the Murphys wine-tasting strip round out a typical Gold Country itinerary. Yosemite National Park's northern entrances are within day-trip range.

The foothills around Angels Camp have a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. July and August are the hottest and driest months, with highs commonly in the low 90s Fahrenheit and minimal rainfall, making them peak season for lake recreation at New Melones and Lake Tulloch. Sites at private RV parks fill quickly around the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee in May and on summer weekends, so book several weeks ahead. Spring brings wildflowers and full reservoirs, but March is among the wettest and most humid months, and overnight temperatures can still drop near freezing. Fall delivers comfortable daytime temperatures, cooler evenings, and lighter crowds, particularly in September and October. Winter stays open at most private parks in Angels Camp, but Calaveras Big Trees State Park sits higher in the Sierra and camping there is only available from March through November, with much of Highway 4 closed in winter due to snow. Wildfire risk peaks in late summer and early fall, so check current fire restrictions before traveling.

Elevations near town sit around 1,400 feet, climbing quickly as you head east on Highway 4 toward Arnold and the sequoias. Roads into the private RV parks are paved and big-rig friendly, with pull-through sites available at Angels Camp RV Resort and other commercial properties. Glory Hole's loops have paved driveways and accept rigs up to roughly 45 to 50 feet, but sites are non-electric with no water hookups, so arrive with full fresh tanks. Glory Hole has no active dump station at this time; the nearest is at Tuttletown Recreation Area near the Fiddleneck Group Campground entrance. Summer afternoons get hot and dry; shade varies by site. The area is bear-aware, particularly at higher elevations near Calaveras Big Trees, where bear lockers are provided and proper food storage is required. Cell coverage is generally reliable in Angels Camp itself and spotty along lake shorelines and forest roads. Quiet hours and fire restrictions are enforced at federal and state sites.
