Camping near Aromas, California
Aromas sits in the rolling hills where Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz counties meet, with U.S. Route 101 running along the southeastern edge of town. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of the Monterey Peninsula, Santa Cruz, Gilroy, San Juan Bautista, and Pinnacles National Park, making it a practical base for exploring California's Central Coast.
The closest full-service options are private RV parks rather than public campgrounds. McAlpine Lake and Park, just east of town off Anzar Road, offers RV sites, tent sites, and cabins around a stocked fishing lake. Betabel RV Resort sits a few miles north along Betabel Road near San Juan Bautista, with paved back-in and pull-through sites and full hookups. Salinas / Monterey KOA in Prunedale provides a small, highway-accessible park with cottages and a pool. Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville offers RV hookups during non-event periods, and Gilroy Garlic USA RV Park serves travelers heading north toward the South Bay. Pinnacles National Park, roughly an hour southeast, adds a public-land camping option.
Things to do near Aromas
The area is built for short day trips. Mission San Juan Bautista, the oldest continuously in-service Spanish mission in California, sits minutes from Betabel RV Resort and anchors the historic core of San Juan Bautista. The Monterey Peninsula is about twenty minutes from the Salinas / Monterey KOA, putting Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and 17-Mile Drive within easy reach. Santa Cruz, the boardwalk, and beaches such as Sunset State Beach and Manresa State Beach lie to the northwest. Pinnacles National Park offers more than 30 miles of trails, talus caves, and reliable California condor sightings. Anglers can fish at McAlpine Lake, which is stocked with trout, bass, catfish, and bluegill. Gilroy adds outlet shopping and a long-standing summer garlic festival tradition.

The Central Coast runs on a Mediterranean pattern: warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. Days sit in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, wildflowers fill the hills around Pinnacles in March and April, and crowds are lighter than in summer. Pinnacles Campground reservations open six months in advance on Recreation.gov, and spring weekends commonly sell out within minutes of the window opening.
Summer brings the busiest stretch for coastal campgrounds. Inland temperatures climb, with Pinnacles often above 100°F, while coastal mornings around Monterey and Santa Cruz stay cool and foggy. Book Salinas / Monterey KOA, Betabel RV Resort, and McAlpine Lake and Park several weeks ahead for weekends in July and August. Late September through November offers mild weather, lower demand, and harvest activity in the Salinas Valley and Santa Cruz County wine region. Winter is the wettest season, with most precipitation falling between December and February. Private RV parks in the Aromas area generally stay open year-round, but interior dirt roads and trails can be muddy after storms.

What a great experience. Lorant and Katalin couldn't have been more pleasant to work with. And the trailer is in excellent condition. I have been renting a trailer every year for the last 5 years to attend an annual campout with friends, and this is the nicest trailer I've rented by far. I would happily rent this trailer again.
Frank K. - Jul 2026
As usual, Lorant’s RV is one of the cleanest and best RV we ever rented! This is our second time getting it and certainly will not be the last. Well maintained, fully equipped, and perfect for our family. Love it!

How to book campgrounds near Aromas
Private parks in this area handle their own bookings. Betabel RV Resort and McAlpine Lake and Park take reservations directly by phone or through their websites, with cabin and group bookings handled separately. Salinas / Monterey KOA accepts online and phone reservations through the KOA system. Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville sells RV hookup sites around its event calendar, so dates can be limited during fair week and major shows. Gilroy Garlic USA RV Park books directly with the operator. Pinnacles Campground is reservation-only with no first-come, first-served sites; standard tent and RV sites release six months ahead and group sites up to twelve months ahead on Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777. For spring weekends, set a calendar alert and be online at 7:00 a.m. Pacific when the window opens.
What to expect on the ground
Most parks within a short drive of Aromas are RV-focused rather than wilderness campgrounds. Expect paved or asphalt pads, full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, laundry, showers, and on-site stores at Betabel RV Resort, Salinas / Monterey KOA, and Gilroy Garlic USA RV Park. McAlpine Lake and Park leans more rustic, with shaded sites around a private lake and cabins available. Sites along the U.S. 101 corridor pick up highway noise; parks set back from the freeway are quieter. Cell service is generally reliable in the Aromas, San Juan Bautista, and Prunedale areas and drops off inside Pinnacles National Park. Pets are welcome at the private parks on leash; at Pinnacles, leashed pets are allowed in the campground but not on trails. Bring layers, since coastal fog can keep mornings in the 50s even when inland afternoons hit the 80s.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Aromas%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Aromas, California?
Good news: for almost every RV rental in Aromas, your regular driver's license is all you need. California only requires a noncommercial Class B license for motorhomes over 40 feet long or over 26,000 pounds, and a noncommercial Class A for trailers over 10,000 pounds. The vast majority of RVs on RVezy, including campervans, travel trailers, and Class C motorhomes, fall well under those limits. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform before pickup. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club before you fly in and you're set.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook-2011/license-classes-and-requirements/What protection and roadside assistance are included with my Aromas RV rental?
Every RV rental in Aromas booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 101 with peace of mind. You choose your protection tier during checkout (not the host), letting you match coverage to your comfort level. If you get a flat on Pacheco Pass or a battery issue at Pinnacles, one call brings help to you. It is one of the biggest reasons first-time renters feel confident booking on RVezy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Aromas RV trip?
You can book your Aromas RV trip with confidence. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period right after booking, so you are not locked in the moment you confirm. After that, what you are eligible for depends on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits. If something comes up, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options. Booking early to lock in the best Aromas RV rental does not mean losing flexibility.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Aromas?
Yes, and Aromas is a great launchpad for a dog-friendly adventure. Many hosts on RVezy welcome pets, so use the Pet-Friendly filter to find a pet-friendly RV rental Aromas owners have already approved for furry guests. Your pup will love nearby Manresa State Beach (leashed dogs allowed on the upper beach), the trails at Fremont Peak State Park, and the off-leash area at Pinto Lake County Park in Watsonville. Pinnacles National Park restricts pets to paved roads and campgrounds, so plan caves and trails as a human-only day. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee.
nps.gov/pinn/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental in Aromas?
Yes, RV delivery in Aromas is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a great choice if you would rather not drive a large rig down Highway 101 or the winding road into Pinnacles. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV to your site at Pinnacles Campground, Betabel RV Park, San Lorenzo County Park in King City, or even a private driveway, then set up hookups and walk you through every system. Filter listings by Delivery and message the host with your destination for a quote. It is the easiest way to enjoy an Aromas RV trip without sitting in the driver's seat.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Aromas%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I travel from Aromas, and how does mileage work?
Aromas sits in a sweet spot for road trips, with the entire Central Coast and Bay Area within easy reach. Popular runs include Monterey and Big Sur (about 25 to 60 miles south), Santa Cruz (25 miles northwest), Pinnacles National Park (45 miles southeast), Yosemite Valley (around 175 miles east), and San Francisco (95 miles north). Each host sets their own mileage policy on the listing page, so you'll see exactly what's included before you book. Some hosts even offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for longer loops. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Aromas to Yosemite or back up through Wine Country, message the host to ask about a flat-rate mileage package.
nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Aromas for RV camping?
You have great choices for RV camping near Aromas. Betabel RV Park, just off Highway 101 near Aromas, offers full-hookup sites, a pool, laundry, and accepts large rigs. Pinnacles Campground inside Pinnacles National Park (about 45 minutes east) offers 36 RV sites with 30-amp electric, a seasonal pool, and condor sightings. San Lorenzo County Park in King City has shady, full-hookup sites that work well as a Big Sur basecamp. Yanks RV Resort in Greenfield gives easy access to both Pinnacles entrances. For a coastal option, Sunset State Beach near Watsonville offers dune-side sites about 15 miles away. Book Pinnacles up to six months ahead on Recreation.gov, since it fills fast during wildflower season.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234015When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Aromas?
Aromas has a Mediterranean climate that's genuinely friendly to RVers nearly year-round, with temperatures typically ranging from 40°F in winter to about 77°F in summer. The sweet spot is mid-March through mid-November, with March to May delivering the famous Pinnacles wildflower bloom and clear, 70°F days. September and October are the warmest months and the smartest pick for fewer crowds at Big Sur and Monterey. Winters are mild and wet, with January as the rainiest month, but daytime highs still hit the low 60s, making winter motorhome rental Aromas trips a quiet, affordable option. Pro tip: book Pinnacles camping reservations the moment a six-month window opens for peak spring dates.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting in Aromas?
You've got this, and Aromas is actually one of the easier places in California to learn. First time renting an RV? Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering everything from leveling and hookups to the water and propane systems, so you're never handed the keys cold. The roads around Aromas (Highway 101, Highway 156, San Juan Road) are wide, well-maintained, and flatter than the coastal cliffs of Big Sur or the steep grades of the Sierra. Pick a Class B campervan or smaller Class C for the easiest handling, and consider host delivery for ultimate stress-free mode. You can message hosts directly from the listing with any nerves-of-steel question before you book.
dot.ca.gov/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RV rental in Aromas booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on Highway 25 heading to Pinnacles, a dead battery at Sunset State Beach, or a lockout in downtown Monterey is a single phone call away from help. Your host is also your first text-message resource for quirks specific to the rig, like how the awning retracts or where the spare propane tank lives. And RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every booking. Translation: you're never stranded, and you're never figuring it out alone.
chp.ca.gov/Can I take my Aromas RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Cross-state travel is welcome on most RVezy bookings, so an RV road trip from Aromas up to Oregon's coast or east through Nevada to Utah's mighty five national parks is absolutely on the table. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and depends on the insurance coverage on the specific listing, so confirm with the host through the listing page before you book a cross-border trip. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage do not extend south of the border. Popular interstate routes from Aromas include Highway 1 to the Oregon coast (about 700 miles) and I-80 east to Lake Tahoe (250 miles).
cbp.gov/travelWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how do I budget for gas?
Realistic numbers go a long way. Campervans (Class B) in the Aromas area average about 16 to 20 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs typically run 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but usually knock 3 to 5 MPG off your truck's normal rate. Central Coast gas prices tend to sit above the national average, with stations in Salinas, Hollister, and Gilroy generally cheaper than coastal Monterey or Santa Cruz. Fill up in Hollister before heading to Pinnacles, the next station is a long way out. Budget roughly $0.30 to $0.55 per mile for fuel on most rigs.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Aromas?
Lock in your campsites as soon as your dates are set, especially for spring and summer. Pinnacles Campground accepts reservations up to six months out on Recreation.gov, and prime wildflower weekends (March through May) sell out within minutes of release. California State Parks like Sunset State Beach and Fremont Peak open a six-month rolling window on ReserveCalifornia.com, and they're equally competitive. Private parks like Monterey Vacation RV Park and Yanks RV Resort in Greenfield are more forgiving, often bookable two to four weeks ahead. Pro tip: set up a free campsite availability alert on Recreation.gov or Campnab for cancellations, last-minute openings at Pinnacles are common midweek.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234015What are driving conditions like around Aromas?
Driving an RV around Aromas is delightfully manageable. The town sits at the meeting point of four counties just off Highway 101, with wide rural roads, gentle agricultural terrain, and almost no urban congestion. Watch for a few specifics: Highway 25 south to Pinnacles is two lanes with no shoulder in spots, so take it easy in a longer rig; Highway 156 between Hollister and Castroville can back up on summer weekends; and the climb over Pacheco Pass (Highway 152) toward Los Banos has a sustained grade where you'll want to downshift. Coastal fog is common in early mornings, especially May through July, so headlights on and patience win the day.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Aromas?
Central Coast campgrounds are well-equipped for RVers. Monterey Vacation RV Park offers full hookups (water, sewer, 20/30-amp electric), laundry, propane refills, a pool, and Wi-Fi. Pinnacles Campground provides 30-amp electric at RV sites, a dump station (open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., key from the camp store), potable water fill, flush toilets, hot showers, a swimming pool, and a small store. San Lorenzo County Park has full hookups and shady sites. For where to park an RV in Aromas overnight outside a campground, options are very limited (no Walmart overnight parking locally), so plan a reserved site each night. Closest dump stations outside campgrounds: Hollister and Salinas.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234015What features and amenities come with RVs rented in Aromas?
You will find a great range on RVezy. Most Aromas-area motorhomes and travel trailers include a queen or king bed, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette and lounge seating with seatbelts for travel, air conditioning, propane heat, and a generator or battery setup for off-grid stays. Campervans are more compact but typically include a convertible bed, kitchenette, and basic power. Many listings include a TV, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots as add-ons. Filter by sleeps count to match your group size, and check the listing page for amenities marked by each host.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Aromas%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons, pickup options, and mileage policies should I look for?
Hosts in Aromas offer extras that can transform your trip. Common add-ons include linens and bedding packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, generators, bike racks, and pet packages. Many hosts offer delivery (often priced per mile) to Pinnacles Campground, Monterey-area RV parks, or your address in San Jose, Santa Cruz, or Salinas. Mileage policies vary: some include 100 to 150 free miles per night, others offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, and any overage is shown upfront on the listing. Interested in a one-way trip? Message the host directly. Popular routes from Aromas include south to San Luis Obispo and north to wine country.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Aromas%2C%20CaliforniaHow do payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Aromas?
Payment is handled entirely inside the RVezy platform, with no cash or host transfers. You pay the rental total (nightly rate, service fee, any chosen add-ons, and your selected protection plan) at the time of booking with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, and the amount is shown clearly on each listing. As long as you return the rig clean, undamaged, and with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after your trip. Take date-stamped photos of the RV's exterior, interior, and odometer at pickup and dropoff to keep everything smooth.
