Camping near Atherton, California
Atherton sits on the San Francisco Peninsula in San Mateo County, roughly equidistant from the Pacific coast and the redwood-cloaked Santa Cruz Mountains. The town itself is residential and has no public campgrounds, but RV renters can reach a useful mix of options within a 30 to 60 minute drive. Trailer Villa RV Park, the closest commercial park, offers a paved, full-hookup base just off Highway 101 in Redwood City. West over Skyline Boulevard, the main campground at Portola Redwoods State Park has a 55-site family campground, 4 group campsites, and a trail camp for backpackers set among coast redwoods. On the coast, Francis Beach Campground at Half Moon Bay State Beach has 52 campsites suitable for both tent and RV camping, with some sites offering electrical hookups but no water or sewer hookups, and the campground stays open year round. Pelican Point RV Park and Half Moon Bay RV Park provide full-hookup alternatives nearby. The mix lets renters choose between quick freeway access, redwood quiet, or salt-air sites within a single trip-planning radius.
Things to do near Atherton
From a base near Atherton, days fill quickly. On the coast, a multi-use coastal trail runs approximately 4 miles along Half Moon Bay, connecting beaches for biking and walking, with tide pools, bluff overlooks, and surf breaks along the shoreline. Whale watching from bluffs, surf fishing, and surfing are popular, though swimming is not recommended due to cold water and strong rip currents. Inland, Portola Redwoods State Park protects some of the most remote and scenic redwoods in the region, the Peter's Creek Grove, with creekside hiking and trail connections to Pescadero Creek and Memorial county parks. Closer to town, families can use Atherton as a launch point for the Stanford campus, Filoli Historic House and Garden, and the Crystal Springs Regional Trail along the reservoir.

The Peninsula has a Mediterranean climate, so the camping calendar splits cleanly into a dry summer and a wet winter. Summer days inland near Atherton run warm and clear, while the Half Moon Bay coast stays cool and often fogged in during morning and evening hours. This is peak season for coastal sites, and Francis Beach books out months ahead. In the redwoods, the campground at Portola Redwoods is open April through October, so a fall or winter overnight there is not an option, though the day-use park stays open year round.
Winter brings most of the year's rain, especially December through February, and short-lived atmospheric river storms can close coastal roads and trails. Spring delivers wildflowers and the greenest hills, with cool nights still common, especially along the coast. Fall, after Labor Day, often produces the warmest, clearest weather of the year on the Peninsula before the rains return in late autumn.

How to book campsites near Atherton
Both Portola Redwoods State Park and Half Moon Bay State Beach use ReserveCalifornia, the official California State Parks reservation service. Reservations can be booked up to six months in advance of the arrival date on a rolling window, and inventory becomes available on ReserveCalifornia.com each day at 8 a.m. PST. Phone reservations are also possible at 1-800-444-PARK. Popular coastal parks often book within minutes of opening, so create a ReserveCalifornia account in advance, save payment details, and have RV length and slide-out dimensions ready, since site lengths vary widely. Private parks such as Trailer Villa, Pelican Point, and Half Moon Bay RV Park book directly through the operator, and weekend availability in summer can be tight.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Hookups vary sharply by campground. Trailer Villa RV Park, Pelican Point RV Park, and Half Moon Bay RV Park offer full-hookup sites with water, sewer, and 30 and 50 amp electric service. State park sites are more limited: there are no water or sewer hookups at Francis Beach, but campers have access to a dump station with potable water for a fee, and 34 of the 52 sites offer electric hookups. Portola Redwoods has no RV hookups, but the campground has a campfire center, drinking water, flush toilets and showers, and accommodates trailers and RVs up to 24 feet. Coastal sites can be windy and cold at night even in summer. No cell service reaches the canyon at Portola Redwoods, so plan to arrive with food, fuel, and downloaded maps.
