Campgrounds near Blackhawk
Blackhawk sits at the southeast foot of Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County, putting RV travelers within an easy drive of two distinct camping environments: the oak-and-chaparral slopes of Mount Diablo State Park to the west, and the waterways of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to the northeast.
The closest tent and small-rig option is Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park, a state-park campground just inside the South Gate at roughly 1,450 feet elevation, with hiking access straight from the loop. For full-hookup RV sites, travelers head into the Delta. Rio Viento RV Park sits on the south bank near Rio Vista, while Eddo's Harbor and RV Park occupies a working marina on Sherman Island. Sugar Barge RV Resort and Marina, on Bethel Island, is the largest Delta-side resort in the cluster, with a restaurant, pool, and marina services. Brannan Island State Recreation Area, between Antioch and Rio Vista on Highway 160, rounds out the options with a public-park feel and direct river access.
Things to do near Blackhawk
On the mountain side, the big draw is the Summit Trail leaving from the Live Oak area, along with the Rock City sandstone formations a short walk from the campground loop. The drive to Mount Diablo's summit yields long views across the Bay and Central Valley on clear days. In the Delta, the focus shifts to water. Fishing from Brannan Island State Recreation Area is excellent for striped bass, black bass, bluegill, and sturgeon. The park has a ten-lane launch ramp and day-use areas including Windy Cove and the Seven Mile Slough picnic area. Families based at Sugar Barge RV Resort and Marina can rent boats on site, and Eddo's Harbor and Rio Viento RV Park both offer direct Delta access. Blackhawk Plaza and the Blackhawk Museums are a short drive for a low-key day off the trail.

The Blackhawk area follows a Mediterranean pattern: warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters, with most rain falling between November and March. That climate shapes when each campground is at its best.
Spring is the strongest window for Mount Diablo. Wildflowers peak from March into May, daytime temperatures are mild, and the grass is still green. Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park books out on weekends in this period, so weekday stays are easier to land. Summer brings heat on the mountain, where afternoon highs regularly exceed 100°F, and pushes most family traffic to the water. Delta parks, including Brannan Island State Recreation Area, Sugar Barge RV Resort and Marina, Rio Viento RV Park, and Eddo's Harbor and RV Park, run at peak occupancy from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Fall cools things off, fishing stays strong, and reservations loosen up. Winter is the quietest stretch: rain is frequent, the mountain can see fog and occasional snow on the summit, and some Delta services scale back, though many sites remain open year-round.

How to book a campground near Blackhawk
State-park sites use ReserveCalifornia, which operates on a rolling six-month window: inventory for a given arrival date opens at 8 a.m. Pacific exactly six months prior. That window applies to both Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park and Brannan Island State Recreation Area. Weekdays are usually easy to book; weekends can be very difficult in spring and summer. Cancellations open up regularly, so last-minute checks pay off. From October 15 to May 15, some Brannan Island sites operate first-come, first-served. Private Delta resorts handle their own bookings: reserve Sugar Barge RV Resort and Marina, Rio Viento RV Park, and Eddo's Harbor and RV Park directly through each property by phone or website. Holiday weekends and the spring wildflower stretch on Mount Diablo are the hardest dates.
What to expect
Mount Diablo sites are rustic. Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park has potable water, flush toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, but no hookups, and the 22 sites sit close together, so privacy is limited. Cell service is spotty, and gates close at sunset and reopen at 8:00 AM, so plan arrivals accordingly. Pets are allowed in the campground and on paved roads but not on park trails.
Delta campgrounds feel different. Brannan Island has 128 campsites, including 12 full-hookup sites in the Olympic Loop, plus flush bathrooms and coin-operated showers. Private resorts like Sugar Barge RV Resort and Marina offer full hookups, a pool, and on-site dining. Summer afternoons in the Delta are hot but breezy, with mosquitoes near sloughs at dusk. Bring sun shade and extra water for any stay on the mountain.

For longer loops to Yosemite or the Pacific Coast Highway, filter for an RV rental with unlimited mileage. You can see each RV's mileage policy directly on its RVezy listing.

Reservations fill quickly in spring and fall, so book through ReserveCalifornia or the East Bay Regional Parks reservation system a few months ahead.

Book campgrounds as early as possible for an RV trip starting in Blackhawk, especially for weekends and holidays in spring, summer, and fall. State park sites are reservable through ReserveCalifornia up to six months in advance, and East Bay Regional Parks like Del Valle and Anthony Chabot have their own reservation system that also opens months ahead. For peak summer weekends at Del Valle, aim for three to six months out, and consider midweek stays for easier availability and a quieter experience.
reservecalifornia.com/Are there any local driving conditions to be aware of near Blackhawk?
Driving around Blackhawk and neighboring Danville is generally easy, with wide suburban roads and quick access to I-680. Expect heavier traffic on I-680 during weekday morning and evening commute hours, and note that Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard and the road up to the summit are narrow and winding, which isn't ideal for larger motorhomes or trailers. If you'd rather skip Bay Area traffic entirely, booking RV delivery directly to your campground is a stress-free alternative.

Each RVezy listing shows a detailed amenity list, and you can message the host directly with any specific questions before you book.
