Campgrounds and RV parks near Cambrian Park, CA

Most RV trips out of this area split time between the redwoods and the coast. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park has a self-guided loop through old-growth redwoods, with a tallest tree near 277 feet, and roughly 20 miles of hiking and horseback trails, including a half-mile climb to the Observation Deck at 805 feet with Monterey Bay views. The San Lorenzo River runs through the park with summer swimming holes such as the Garden of Eden. Roaring Camp Railroad in Felton runs steam-train rides down to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. From a Morgan Hill base, families can reach Gilroy Gardens, Uvas Canyon County Park waterfalls, and the wineries along the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. Santa Cruz beaches and the Monterey Bay Aquarium are within day-trip range.

The Bay Area has a Mediterranean climate with a sharp split between a wet winter and a dry summer. The wet season runs roughly November through March, and the dry season covers late spring through early fall. That pattern drives how the campgrounds operate. Summer, from Memorial Day through Labor Day, is the busiest stretch in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Reservations at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground are strongly recommended in this window because sites fill quickly. Spring and fall bring smaller crowds, comfortable daytime temperatures, and easier site selection. Winter is the wet season, with the heaviest rain in January and February. Henry Cowell has shifted toward year-round availability following the closure of nearby Big Basin, though weather-related closures can occur during heavy storms. Private RV resorts like Coyote Valley RV Resort and Santa Cruz Ranch RV Resort generally operate year round, which makes them the reliable cold-weather option.

Sites in the redwood corridor are shaded and cool, even at midday, and cell coverage drops out quickly once vehicles leave the main highways. Henry Cowell sites sit close together with picnic tables, fire rings, and food lockers, with flush toilets and coin-operated hot showers; bring quarters. The campground has no electric, water, or sewer hookups at sites, so RVs need to arrive self-sufficient. Roads inside the state park are narrow and winding, so rigs near the 35-foot limit should arrive in daylight. Coyote Valley RV Resort offers level pads, 30 and 50 amp full hookups, and big-rig access off Monterey Road, with audible train noise at night from the nearby tracks. Expect mountain-route driving on Highway 17 between Cambrian Park and the Santa Cruz Mountains parks, with steep grades and heavy weekend traffic to and from the coast.
