Campgrounds and RV parks near Campbell, CA

The Santa Cruz Mountains are the main draw. At Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, the Redwood Grove Loop is a short, mostly flat walk through old-growth trees, and the park has over 30 miles of hiking trails plus an observation deck with views toward Monterey Bay. Roaring Camp Railroad runs steam-train excursions through the redwoods from nearby Felton. Portola Redwoods State Park adds about 18 miles of creekside trails through coast redwoods, ferns, and seasonal waterfalls on Fall and Pescadero creeks. Beach days are easy from Campbell: Santa Cruz, Capitola, and New Brighton State Beach are within about an hour. Closer in, Campbell has a walkable downtown, the Los Gatos Creek Trail for biking, and Lexington Reservoir for paddling and fishing.

Summer is the dominant season for camping near Campbell. Coastal fog often spills inland in the mornings, but inland valleys warm into the 80s by afternoon, and the redwood canopies stay cool. Reservations through ReserveCalifornia are strongly recommended between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when state-park sites routinely fill the moment the six-month booking window opens. Spring brings wildflowers, full creeks, and steady greenery through the Santa Cruz Mountains, with cooler nights and a higher chance of lingering rain. Fall is one of the most comfortable windows: warm dry days, cool nights, and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Winter is the wet season. Most rainfall arrives between November and March, trails get muddy, and some seasonal campgrounds close. Portola Redwoods typically operates from April through October, while Henry Cowell remains open year-round. Always confirm current park status before booking, since storm damage and fire conditions can trigger closures.

Expect a split between two camping styles. Private resorts near Campbell offer paved or concrete pads, full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, pools, and pet areas, and they generally handle bigger rigs without trouble. State-park campgrounds in the redwoods are more rustic. Henry Cowell limits trailers to 31 feet and motorhomes to 35 feet with no hookups, and Portola Redwoods caps trailers at 21 feet and motorhomes at 24 feet, also with no hookups. Both feature flush toilets, coin-operated showers, fire rings, picnic tables, and food lockers. There is no dump station inside Portola Redwoods, so plan tank stops accordingly. Cell service is patchy to nonexistent inside the redwood canyons, so download maps and reservations before leaving the valley.
