Camping near Castle Hill, California
Castle Hill sits in the East Bay foothills of Contra Costa County, within easy reach of Walnut Creek, the Diablo Valley, and the Carquinez Strait. The area gives RV travelers two distinct camping styles within a short drive: state park sites tucked into oak woodland on the slopes of Mount Diablo, and full-hookup private parks along the I-80 and I-780 corridors closer to Vallejo and Benicia.
Live Oak in Mount Diablo State Park is the closest reservable campground to Castle Hill, set in a wooded glen at roughly 1,450 feet just inside the South Gate Entrance Station. It accommodates RVs and trailers up to 20 feet, with no hookups on site. For larger rigs that need full hookups, Tradewinds RV Park and Vallejo RV Park sit off I-80 in Vallejo, and Rio Viento RV Park serves travelers heading toward the Delta. Benicia State Recreational Area offers a small enroute option for self-contained motorhomes along the Carquinez Strait. The mix suits weekend tent-and-trailer trips, summit hikes, ferry days into San Francisco, and longer Bay Area itineraries.
Things to do near Castle Hill
Hiking and summit drives on Mount Diablo are the main draw. From Live Oak, short trails lead to Rock City's sandstone formations, including Sentinel Rock, and the summit road climbs to panoramic views across the Bay Area and the Central Valley. Cyclists tackle the same road as a popular climb, so drivers should expect to share narrow, blind corners.
Along the water, Benicia State Recreational Area covers marsh, grassy hillsides and rocky beaches along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait, with about 2.5 miles of road and bike paths used by walkers, runners, cyclists, and equestrians. Picnicking, bird watching and shoreline fishing at Dillon Point are added attractions. Families staying in Vallejo can reach Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in minutes, ride the Vallejo ferry to San Francisco, or drive north into Napa Valley for wineries and downtown strolls.

The region has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Spring is the strongest all-around window: green hills, wildflowers on Mount Diablo, and comfortable temperatures for hiking before summer heat builds. Weekend sites at Live Oak book out quickly from March through May, so plan early.
Summer is reliably dry and hot inland. Afternoon highs on the lower slopes of Mount Diablo regularly push into the upper 80s, and the park is subject to closure due to extreme fire danger during the general fire season from May through October, so calling the park to confirm conditions and any closures is suggested. Closer to the Carquinez Strait, marine air keeps Benicia cooler and breezier, often with morning fog.
Fall brings the most stable weather: warm days, cool nights, and clear summit views once fire season eases. Winter is the wet season; rain falls mainly from November through March, the hills turn green, and creeks run. Mount Diablo can see frost and occasional snow at higher elevations, while valley campgrounds stay mild but soggy.

How to book campgrounds near Castle Hill
Live Oak and the other Mount Diablo State Park campgrounds are booked through ReserveCalifornia: search Mount Diablo SP, then select arrival date and length of stay. Reservations open on a rolling window up to six months in advance of the arrival date, with new inventory released daily at 8 a.m. Pacific. A ReserveCalifornia account is required before making a first reservation. Sites are designed primarily for tent camping but accommodate RVs and trailers up to 20 feet.
Benicia State Recreational Area offers three enroute campsites on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations possible, limited to motorhomes or vehicles with trailers that are fully self-contained; tents are not permitted. Tradewinds RV Park, Vallejo RV Park, and Rio Viento RV Park are private parks and are booked directly with each operator by phone or website.
What to expect on arrival
At Live Oak, expect a compact campground with limited privacy between sites. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and paved parking pad that may require leveling. Restrooms are open; shower and potable-water availability has been limited by drought affecting the mountain's spring-fed source, so bringing extra water is strongly recommended. Gates close at sunset and reopen at 8:00 a.m., and cell service on the mountain is patchy.
Private RV parks along I-80 are paved, level, and built for big rigs. Tradewinds RV Park has 78 RV sites with level gravel pads, full hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, and pull-through sites that take RVs up to 45 feet. Freeway noise is part of the trade-off for easy access to the Vallejo ferry, Napa, and San Francisco. Bear lockers are not standard at valley parks; secure food at state park sites due to active raccoons.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Castle Hill, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Castle Hill, CA?
RV rental in Castle Hill is more affordable than many Bay Area travelers expect. Travel trailers near this Walnut Creek neighborhood typically run about $100 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes average around $200 to $275 nightly, and larger Class A rigs can run $275 to $400, with many hosts offering 10 to 20 percent discounts on weekly and monthly bookings. For a cheap RV rental in Castle Hill, book midweek in spring or fall when demand softens, and consider a smaller Class B campervan rental in Castle Hill if fuel and parking are top concerns. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book listings to lock in rates fast, since Mount Diablo and Napa weekends sell out quickly between May and September.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Castle%20Hill%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Castle Hill, California?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Castle Hill. California does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers under 40 feet, so the same license you use for your car works for nearly every rig on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club before your trip, usually for less than $20. That's it, you're cleared to hit Highway 24 toward Mount Diablo.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-06/Is my RV rental in Castle Hill protected if something goes wrong?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can roll out of Castle Hill with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host, so you can match it to your plans, whether that is a weekend at Mount Diablo State Park or a two-week California coast loop. Roadside help is just a phone call away if you get a flat on Ygnacio Valley Road or need a battery jump at the campground. Full details on coverage levels and what is included are available on the RVezy insurance and protection page.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Castle Hill RV trip?
Booking is low risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the host, and there is a grace period after booking when you can cancel for a full refund. After that, the refund you receive depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, and the exact terms are shown during checkout and in your booking confirmation so you know where you stand before you commit. If your host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit so you can rebook. Pro tip: book early to lock in your preferred rig for a Wine Country or Yosemite trip, and contact RVezy support if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Castle Hill RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Castle Hill. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see rigs whose owners welcome your dog (some allow cats too). Castle Hill sits right next to incredible dog-friendly trails like the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail and the Iron Horse Regional Trail, both within a 10-minute drive. For overnight stays, Mount Diablo State Park campgrounds allow leashed dogs at campsites, and Anthony Chabot Regional Park 15 miles southwest has a dedicated off-leash area. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and bring a portable water bowl, since East Bay summer temperatures regularly climb into the 90s.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=517Can the RV be delivered to me in Castle Hill?
Yes, RV delivery in Castle Hill is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a motorhome through Walnut Creek's tight streets. Many local hosts will bring the rig directly to your driveway, a nearby campground like Mount Diablo State Park, or an RV-friendly meeting spot off Interstate 680. They will level it, hook up power and water if available, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter listings by Delivery to see which hosts offer it and their delivery radius. Pro tip: delivery to Mount Diablo's Live Oak or Juniper campground saves you from navigating the narrow Summit Road switchbacks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039506114-Delivery-options-for-your-rentalHow far can I drive on my Castle Hill RV trip?
You've got serious range from Castle Hill, and many RVezy hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for a California road trip. Each host sets their own mileage policy, shown clearly on the listing, and typical allowances range from 100 to 150 free miles per day with a small per-mile fee beyond that. From Castle Hill, Yosemite Valley is about 175 miles east, Lake Tahoe is roughly 200 miles northeast, Big Sur is around 175 miles south, and the Mendocino coast sits 175 miles northwest. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Castle Hill that spans multiple parks, filter for unlimited-mileage listings to keep your budget predictable.
visitcalifornia.com/places-to-visit/road-trips/Where can I camp near Castle Hill in my RV?
Some of the best campgrounds near Castle Hill are within a 30-minute drive. Mount Diablo State Park offers Live Oak, Juniper, and Junction campgrounds about 10 miles east with stunning summit views (Juniper sits at 3,000 feet and is reservable). Anthony Chabot Regional Park, 15 miles southwest near Lake Chabot, has full hookups, showers, and a dump station. Del Valle Family Campground in Livermore (about 25 miles south) sits on a lake perfect for kayaking. For full-service RV camping in Castle Hill's wider area, San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica offers oceanfront hookups about an hour west. Pro tip: book Mount Diablo sites on ReserveCalifornia up to six months ahead, since summer weekends vanish fast.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=517When is the best time of year for a Castle Hill RV trip?
Castle Hill enjoys a Mediterranean climate, so the sweet spots are April through June and September through early November when daytime temperatures sit in the comfortable 65 to 80 degree range and rain is rare. Summer (July and August) brings warm days in the high 80s to low 90s with cool 55-degree nights, ideal if you're heading to higher elevations like Mount Diablo's 3,849-foot summit. Winters are mild (50s to 60s) but wetter from December through March. For a motorhome rental in Castle Hill paired with Wine Country, target the September to October harvest season. Insider tip: Bay Area fog often burns off by 11 a.m., making mornings perfect for hitting the road early.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay starting from Castle Hill?
You're in great hands, and first time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy hosts are used to. Every booking includes a hands-on orientation at pickup where the owner walks you through driving, hookups, slide-outs, and dumping, so you're not figuring it out alone. Castle Hill itself sits in quiet suburban Walnut Creek, giving you space to get comfortable before heading onto Interstate 680 or Highway 24. Stick with a smaller Class C or campervan for your first trip and you'll feel confident in under an hour. Pro tip: practice a few turns in a wide parking lot like the Sunvalley Mall lot in nearby Concord before pointing toward Mount Diablo's twisty Summit Road.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 4, a dead battery at Lake Del Valle, or a mechanical issue on the way to Tahoe is just one phone call away from being handled. Roadside can dispatch a tow, mobile mechanic, or service truck to your location anywhere in California. Your host is also a great first text since they know their rig inside out, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Castle Hill, and snap a quick photo of the VIN at pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Castle Hill RV rental to Oregon, Nevada, or across state lines?
Yes, most RVezy hosts in Castle Hill welcome interstate travel, which opens up incredible routes. Popular runs include Castle Hill to Reno and Lake Tahoe (200 miles northeast), the Oregon Coast (about 500 miles north via Highway 101), and Las Vegas via Death Valley (550 miles southeast). One important note: travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend across that border. Always confirm cross-state plans with your host through the listing message thread before booking so they can adjust mileage if needed. Pro tip: a Castle Hill to Yosemite to Mammoth to Tahoe loop is one of the most scenic week-long RV trips in the western United States.
dot.ca.gov/travelWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect and how much will gas cost?
Plan smart and fuel won't blow your budget. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs around 6 to 10 MPG, and Class B campervans a much friendlier 16 to 20 MPG. California gas prices run higher than the national average (often $4.75 to $5.50 per gallon in the Bay Area as of 2026), so for a 500-mile round trip from Castle Hill to Yosemite in a Class C, budget roughly $250 to $350 in fuel. Pro tip: use the GasBuddy app and fill up in Tracy or Manteca heading east toward the Sierra, where prices typically drop 30 to 50 cents per gallon compared to Walnut Creek stations.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground for my Castle Hill RV trip?
Book your campsite the same day you book your RV, especially for popular Northern California destinations. California State Parks like Mount Diablo and Yosemite open reservations six months ahead through ReserveCalifornia, and summer weekends often fill within minutes of the booking window opening. East Bay Regional Parks (Anthony Chabot, Del Valle) use a separate Reservations EBParks system and typically open bookings several months out. For private parks like San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica, six to eight weeks is usually enough outside of holidays. Pro tip: midweek arrivals at Mount Diablo are often bookable just a week ahead, so a Tuesday to Thursday Castle Hill RV trip can be planned almost on the fly.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around Castle Hill?
Driving an RV around Castle Hill is very manageable once you know the patterns. The biggest factor is Bay Area traffic, so plan to leave before 7 a.m. or after 10 a.m. on weekdays to dodge Interstate 680 and Highway 24 backups. Mount Diablo's Summit Road has tight switchbacks and vehicle length restrictions, so check the park's current size limits before heading up. Coastal Highway 1 is gorgeous but narrow with sharp drop-offs, best suited to a Class B or smaller Class C. For where to park an RV in Castle Hill itself, most residential streets allow short-term parking, but use the RV for trips rather than long-term storage. Pro tip: avoid Mt. Diablo Boulevard through downtown Walnut Creek during weekend evenings.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Castle Hill?
Local campgrounds range from full-service resorts to rustic state park sites, so you can match amenities to your style. Anthony Chabot Regional Park and Del Valle Family Campground offer water and electric hookups, flush toilets, hot showers, and dump stations. Mount Diablo State Park's campgrounds have potable water spigots, vault or flush toilets, and a centralized dump station, but no individual hookups (bring a generator or arrive with a full battery). San Francisco RV Resort in Pacifica offers full 50-amp hookups, WiFi, and laundry. For dumping mid-trip, Concord RV Park (10 minutes from Castle Hill) allows non-guest dump access for a small fee. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving the host, since Mount Diablo spigots can be a hike from your site.
ebparks.org/parks/anthony-chabotWhat's actually inside the RVs I'll find in Castle Hill?
Castle Hill RV rentals come surprisingly well-equipped for instant comfort. Most rigs include a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping four to eight total), a full kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and freezer, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, furnace heat, and seatbelts for every passenger seat. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator. WiFi varies, some hosts provide a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often have slide-outs that nearly double interior space when parked. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list and message the host about specifics like coffee makers or board games before your family RV trip in Castle Hill.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Castle Hill offer flexible add-ons that make your trip easier. Popular extras include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees. Delivery and setup is often available for $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location, and some hosts offer one-way trips on request, so message them through the listing if you're dreaming of dropping the RV in LA or Reno. Pickup typically happens at the host's home with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Mileage allowances are shown right on the listing. Pro tip: bundling delivery plus a stocked kitchen kit turns your motorhome rental in Castle Hill into a true turnkey vacation.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/new-registration/register-recreational-vehicle/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple, secure, and handled entirely through RVezy, with no cash or off-platform transfers. You pay your trip total at booking with a credit or debit card, and the cost is broken down clearly into the nightly rate, service fees, protection plan, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back clean and damage-free. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and fuel gauge at pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: keep all communication with your Castle Hill host inside the RVezy message system so everything is documented in one place.
