Campgrounds and RV parks near Castroville, CA

The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, and Fisherman's Wharf are a short drive south. Elkhorn Slough at Moss Landing is one of the best spots on the California coast for kayaking with sea otters, harbor seals, and shorebirds. Beach access is easy at Marina State Beach, Salinas River State Beach, Zmudowski State Beach, and the wide sand at Sunset State Beach. Fort Ord Dunes State Park offers paved coastal trails suitable for bikes and strollers. Inland, Pinnacles National Park is roughly an hour and a half east for hiking, condor viewing, and talus caves. Carmel-by-the-Sea, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, and the 17-Mile Drive at Pebble Beach are within a half-hour. Castroville itself is known as the artichoke capital, with farm stands along Highway 1.

Monterey Bay has a Mediterranean climate, with a dry summer and a wet winter concentrated between November and March. Summers are short, comfortable, and mostly clear inland, while the immediate coast often sits under a marine layer of low stratus and fog through late spring and early summer. May and June are typically the cloudiest coastal months, with gray mornings that often burn off by midday. July through September brings the warmest, driest weather and the highest demand at coastal campgrounds; bookings for ocean-view sites at Sunset State Beach and full-hookup sites at Marina Dunes RV Park should be made months ahead. Fall, especially September and October, is often the warmest and clearest stretch on the coast and a good window for RV travel with smaller crowds. Winter is mild but wet, with most rainfall arriving in December and January; private parks like Marina Dunes RV Park and the Salinas / Monterey KOA remain open year-round, while some state-beach loops see reduced demand and easier walk-up availability.

Expect cool nights year-round near the coast, even in summer; bring layers and a warm sleeping setup. Sunset State Beach is a classic California state-park experience with pine-shaded bluff sites, fire rings, flush toilets, and hot showers, but no RV hookups, no in-site water, and no on-site dump station; the nearest dump is at New Brighton State Beach. Private parks in Marina and the Prunedale area offer full hookups, laundry, Wi-Fi, and pools, but sites can feel close together. Coastal wind and blowing sand are common at dune-adjacent sites, and morning fog can linger until late morning. Cell service is generally good around Castroville, Marina, and Moss Landing. Pets are typically allowed on leash in campgrounds, but not on state beaches where snowy plovers nest. Generator hours and quiet hours are enforced in state parks.
