Camping near Clayton, California
Clayton sits at the northeast base of Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County, putting RV travelers within a short drive of state-park camping on the mountain and waterfront RV parks in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The closest option is Live Oak Campground inside Mount Diablo State Park, a wooded glen at 1,450 feet elevation just above the South Gate Entrance Station, with access to Rock City's sandstone formations and the park's trail network. North and east of town, the Delta opens up with waterfront parks geared to boaters and anglers, including Rio Viento RV Park and Eddo's Harbor and RV Park, plus the larger state-run Brannan Island State Recreation Area near Rio Vista. To the west, Benicia State Recreational Area offers a limited overnight option along the Carquinez Strait.
Most area campgrounds accept rigs up to about 36 feet, and reservations on the state-park side run through ReserveCalifornia. The mix lets RV renters choose between mountain hiking, Delta water sports, or a quick stopover within an hour of the Bay Area.
Things to do near Clayton
Mount Diablo State Park is the headline draw, with trails leaving from the Live Oak area and a paved road climbing to the 3,849-foot peak for clear-day views across the Bay Area and Central Valley. Rock City's sandstone formations are a short distance from Live Oak Campground and are popular with kids for scrambling. East of town, the Delta is built for water-based recreation. Brannan Island features a ten-lane boat launch ramp, swimming areas, and excellent fishing for striped bass, sturgeon, catfish, bluegill, perch, and bullhead, with access to over 1,000 miles of navigable waterways that make up the Delta. Benicia State Recreation Area draws cyclists, runners, walkers, equestrians, and roller skaters, and also offers picnicking, bird watching, and fishing along the Carquinez Strait.

The Clayton area has a Mediterranean climate, so the seasonal pattern matters more than raw temperature. Spring is the standout window for Mount Diablo: wildflowers peak from March into May, trails are green, and daytime highs are comfortable for hiking. Summer turns hot and dry inland, with afternoon highs often in the upper 80s and 90s on the mountain and in the Delta, so RV renters should target sites with shade or hookups for air conditioning and plan strenuous activity for morning. The park can be very hot and dry during the summer months, making ample hydration and sun protection essential.
The Delta hits its own peak in summer. Between May and October, the Brannan Island campgrounds fill up quickly, so reserve online well in advance. Fall cools off after early October, and most of the region's rain falls between November and March. Winter can bring rain and cooler temperatures, and at times the campground may be closed due to weather conditions, so confirm dates before booking a cold-weather trip on the mountain.

How to book campgrounds near Clayton
Sites at Live Oak in Mount Diablo State Park, Brannan Island State Recreation Area, and other California State Park units are booked through ReserveCalifornia. Reservations can be booked up to 6 months in advance, and park gates close at sunset and reopen at 8:00 AM at Live Oak. Weekend dates fill quickly once the six-month window opens, so flexibility on day of arrival helps. Brannan Island accepts reservations through ReserveCalifornia, and from October 15 to May 15, some sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Benicia State Recreation Area offers three Enroute campsites on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations, limited to motorhomes or vehicles with trailers that are fully self-contained, and tents are not permitted. Privately operated parks such as Rio Viento RV Park and Eddo's Harbor and RV Park are booked directly with the property.
What to expect
Expect a clear split between mountain and Delta experiences. Live Oak features 22 sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire pit or stove, with restrooms and water on site but no hookups, and water availability may be limited due to drought conditions affecting the mountain's spring-fed water source, so bringing additional water is recommended. Sites are close together by modern standards, and cell service on the mountain is spotty. Delta parks feel very different. All of the developed campsites at Brannan Island have paved pads, a table, fire ring and grill, almost all campsites are very large with ample space between neighbors, the maximum trailer or RV size is 36 feet, and the campground has drinking water, flush toilets, showers and an RV dump station. Eddo's Harbor and RV Park offers 42 full hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service, plus a showerhouse, laundry room, fuel dock, convenience store, and propane, which suits longer Delta stays.
