Campgrounds and RV parks near Columbia, CA

Walk the wooden sidewalks of Columbia State Historic Park for hand-dipped chocolates, historic saloons, the Fallon Theatre, and stagecoach rides when season and weather permit. Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown runs steam train excursions on weekends in the warmer months. Day trips reach Calaveras Big Trees State Park for giant sequoia loops and Moaning Cavern for guided cave tours. Water recreation centers on New Melones Lake, Lake Tulloch, and Don Pedro Lake, with fishing, kayaking, and swim beaches. Yosemite National Park's Big Oak Flat entrance is roughly a two hour drive south on Highway 120. Wine tasting rooms cluster around Murphys, and Black Oak Casino in Tuolumne adds an indoor option on rainy days.

The Columbia area follows a Mediterranean foothill climate: hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Summer days commonly reach the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit with very little rain, so awnings, shade, and full freshwater tanks matter. Air conditioning is useful at lower-elevation parks, and sites in oak shade are worth requesting. Late summer and early fall bring elevated wildfire risk across Tuolumne and Calaveras counties. Cal Fire restrictions on open flames, evacuation orders, and PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs can occur with little notice. Check Cal Fire and Visit Tuolumne County alerts before arrival, and confirm with the campground if smoke or evacuations are active. Spring brings green hills, wildflowers in the Red Hills area, and the highest stream flows. At an elevation of 2,100 feet, the town sits above the valley fog line and below the snow line, so winter is mild with occasional frost and rare snow. Highway 108 (Sonora Pass) and Highway 120 (Tioga Pass) close for the season, blocking the high routes east, so plan Yosemite trips via the Big Oak Flat entrance.

Roads into Columbia are paved two-lane routes off Highway 49, with tight turns and grades typical of the foothills. Larger rigs should approach via Parrotts Ferry Road or Highway 49 rather than back roads. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and along the highway, but drops in canyons near the lakes. Most private parks offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, dump stations, potable water, hot showers, laundry, and small camp stores. Many sites are gravel back-ins; pull-throughs exist but go quickly in summer. Wildlife in the area includes deer, wild turkeys, and the occasional black bear, so store food and trash in sealed containers. Dogs are welcome at Columbia but not inside the historic buildings or restaurants.
