Campgrounds and RV parks near Concord, CA

Mount Diablo State Park is the headline outdoor draw, with a paved summit road, the Rock City sandstone formations near the South Gate, and trails ranging from short family loops to the Summit Trail. Live Oak sits just one mile above the South Gate Entrance Station, giving campers convenient access to Rock City's sandstone formations and the park's extensive trail network. Along the water, Benicia State Recreation Area covers marsh, grassy hillsides and rocky beaches along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait and offers 2.5 miles of road and bike paths, with the marshland area on Dillon's Point a favorite for fishing. Vallejo adds Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and a passenger ferry that runs across San Francisco Bay to the Ferry Building, which is the easiest way to reach the city without driving an RV into it. Napa Valley wineries are within a short drive north.

The climate of Concord is Mediterranean, with mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers, so the camping calendar is shaped more by rain than by cold. Winter, from December to February, is mild, with periods of bad weather alternating with sunny periods, and fog can form at night. Mount Diablo's roads and campgrounds remain accessible most of the year, but heavy storms can bring temporary closures, fallen trees, and slick pavement on the steep summit road. Spring is the standout window. March through May brings wildflower blooms on Mount Diablo's grasslands, comfortable hiking temperatures, and rapidly drying trails. The campground is popular with weekend hikers, so Friday and Saturday nights book out quickly in spring and fall, while midweek stays are quieter, especially after the spring bloom. Summer is hot and dry inland. Summer temperatures on Mount Diablo regularly exceed 100°F, making early morning the most comfortable time for trails, while the bay edge near Benicia stays cooler and breezier with afternoon wind. Fire restrictions are common from late spring through fall, and open flames may be limited even at developed sites. Fall brings the best conditions, with daytime temps running 65 to 85°F and cool nights in the 40s to 50s, ideal for hiking without summer's heat, until the first significant rains arrive, typically in November.

Expect a clear split between state park camping and full-service RV parks. Live Oak Campground sits just past the South Gate at about 1,430 to 1,450 feet elevation, with 22 campsites, potable water, and flush toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings. Sites are close together, so privacy can be an issue, and water availability may be limited due to drought conditions affecting the mountain's spring-fed source, so bringing additional water is recommended. Park gates close at sunset and reopen at 8:00 a.m., so plan arrivals accordingly. The Benicia enroute area has no electric or water hookups, but a water faucet and trash cans are available, with each spot offering a picnic table. Private parks along the Interstate 80 corridor offer full hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, Wi-Fi, laundry, showers, and pull-through sites that handle larger rigs, with traffic noise from the highway being the most common trade-off.
