Campgrounds near Dorrington, California
Dorrington sits along Highway 4 in Calaveras County at roughly 4,800 feet in the central Sierra Nevada, surrounded by Stanislaus National Forest and just minutes from Calaveras Big Trees State Park. The area is a practical base for RV trips focused on giant sequoias, the Stanislaus River, and Ebbetts Pass country.
RV options nearby span private parks with full hookups and dry state-park campgrounds. Golden Pines RV Resort and Campground in nearby Arnold offers full-hookup sites in a forested setting along Highway 4. Oak Hollow - Calaveras Big Trees State Park provides dry sites for tents and RVs up to 30 feet in a mixed-conifer forest, with a dump station available elsewhere in the park. Three Links Camp - Odd Fellows is a private group facility in the same corridor. Farther down the foothills, 49er RV Ranch in Columbia offers full-hookup RV sites within walking distance of Columbia State Historic Park. Highway 108 Sno-Park, east of Strawberry, serves winter day-use parking rather than overnight camping in most cases.
Things to do near Dorrington
The headline activity is walking among the giant sequoias at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. The North Grove Trail is short and family-friendly; the South Grove is longer and quieter. The Stanislaus River and Beaver Creek inside the park offer swimming holes and fishing in summer. Hiking, mountain biking, and paddling on nearby alpine lakes are all reachable from Highway 4. In the Gold Country foothills, Columbia State Historic Park preserves a working Gold Rush town with stagecoach rides and gold panning, and Railtown 1897 in Jamestown runs seasonal steam trains. In winter, Highway 108 Sno-Park east of Strawberry provides plowed parking for cross-country skiing and snow play, with snowmobile routes accessed from nearby trailheads.

Dorrington is a mountain town with four distinct seasons, and timing matters for RV access. Late spring through early fall is the prime window for camping at higher elevations. Oak Hollow - Calaveras Big Trees State Park typically operates seasonally from mid-May into early October, and reservations through ReserveCalifornia open up to six months ahead. Snow is possible from October into May, with measurable accumulation across the winter months in the surrounding Sierra.
Summer days are warm with average highs in the mid-80s Fahrenheit in July and cool nights, ideal for sequoia hikes and river time. Fall brings dogwood color in September and October and lighter campground traffic. Winter shifts the area toward snow recreation: California SNO-Park permits are required from November 1 through May 30, and Sonora Pass on Highway 108 closes seasonally. Lower-elevation Gold Country parks such as 49er RV Ranch in Columbia stay accessible year-round and pair well with shoulder-season trips.

The owners are very easy to work with on pick up and delivery times. The RV is very clean, comfortable, nice updated decor with nice dual reclining chairs. The kitchen was fully loaded. The owners really want their customers to have the best RV experience.

Another great experience! This time for 16 days 😳. This was the second time we have rented this RV from Margo. She quickly responded to questions or concerns we had. We will rent from her again! 😊

We've rented our fair share of trailers. But Jeff and Erin's was one of our favorites yet. The trailer was new and clean and perfectly sized for what we needed. Drop off and pick up were seamless. Thanks Jeff and Erin!

How to book campgrounds near Dorrington
Reservation systems vary by operator. Sites inside Calaveras Big Trees State Park, including Oak Hollow, are booked through ReserveCalifornia online or by phone, with a six-month booking window. Summer weekends and the sequoia season fill quickly, so booking the day the window opens is the most reliable approach. Private parks handle their own reservations. Golden Pines RV Resort and Campground accepts bookings through its own office and online channels. 49er RV Ranch in Columbia takes reservations directly. Highway 108 Sno-Park is first-come, first-served day-use parking and requires a California SNO-Park permit. For group stays, contact Three Links Camp - Odd Fellows directly through the lodge.
What to expect
Expect a high-elevation Sierra setting with tall pines, cedars, and firs, and night-time temperatures that drop sharply even in summer. Pack layers, and bring leveling blocks: many forested sites are sloped. Cell coverage is patchy and varies by carrier. Inside Calaveras Big Trees, each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and bear-proof food locker, and food must be stored in the locker overnight. Oak Hollow accommodates RVs up to about 30 feet with no hookups, while a dump station and showers are available elsewhere in the park. RVs and trailers should stick to Highway 4 and the main park road. Yellow jackets are common in late summer, and firewood should be purchased locally to prevent pest spread.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Dorrington, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Dorrington, CA?
An RV rental in Dorrington, CA, is an affordable way to experience the Sierra Nevada and Calaveras Big Trees country. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes average $175 to $295 per night, and luxury Class A rigs go higher. Most hosts also charge a one-time cleaning fee and a per-mile rate beyond a daily allowance. To find cheap RV rentals in Dorrington, book midweek, travel in May or late September, and filter for Instant Book listings. Pro tip: many hosts near Arnold and Murphys discount stays of 5+ nights, so a longer Dorrington RV trip often costs less per day than a weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dorrington,CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Dorrington, California?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dorrington. California does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally under 40 feet. You must be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your identification (ID) through the platform before pickup. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly, usually for under $25, and pair it with your home license. Most first-time renters are pleasantly surprised at how simple the paperwork is for a Sierra Nevada motorhome rental.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-05/Is my RV rental in Dorrington protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, you can book with confidence. Every RV rental in Dorrington, CA, booked on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers eligible physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage tier during checkout, not the host. While it isn't traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection so a small bump on Highway 4 doesn't turn into a big bill. Pro tip: pick your protection level based on how much driving you plan to do. If you're tackling the twisty stretch from Arnold up to Lake Alpine, the higher tier brings extra peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Dorrington RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out you cancel and circumstances like wildfire evacuations or major Highway 4 closures, which are common considerations in the Sierra. You don't have to negotiate with the host or read a different policy on every listing. Pro tip: book your Dorrington RV trip early to lock in the dates you want, then watch the Caltrans QuickMap as your trip approaches so you can adjust plans confidently if Ebbetts Pass weather turns.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Dorrington RV rental?
Absolutely, and Dorrington is a wonderful spot for dog-loving campers. Filter for pet-friendly RV rental in Dorrington on RVezy to see listings that welcome dogs, then message the host to confirm any pet fee or size limits. Once you're up here, Calaveras Big Trees State Park allows leashed dogs (6-foot leash) in the campgrounds, on paved roads, and on the Beaver Creek picnic area trails, and the Stanislaus National Forest roads around Dorrington and Camp Connell are extremely dog-friendly. Pro tip: pack a bear-safe bowl and bring your dog inside the RV at night, since black bears are active throughout the Highway 4 corridor.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=551Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Dorrington?
Yes, RV delivery in Dorrington is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to RVing or flying into California. Many local hosts will drop the RV at Calaveras Big Trees State Park, Golden Pines RV Resort in Camp Connell, or a private cabin driveway in Dorrington, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host with your campsite number. Pro tip: delivery is a smart move for first-timers since Highway 4 above Arnold gets narrow and curvy, and arriving to a fully set-up campsite under the sugar pines is hard to beat.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dorrington,CaliforniaHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Dorrington?
You've got plenty of range for a great Dorrington RV trip. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night and charge roughly $0.35 to $0.50 for additional miles, and some listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for road trips. From Dorrington you can reach Lake Alpine in about 30 miles, Bear Valley Mountain Resort in 25 miles, Yosemite Valley via Highway 120 in roughly 110 miles (around 3 hours), Lake Tahoe's south shore in about 130 miles, and San Francisco in 165 miles. Pro tip: if you're planning a loop through Calaveras Big Trees and Yosemite, filter for unlimited-mileage listings to skip the math entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dorrington,CaliforniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Dorrington to park my RV?
You're surrounded by some of the best campgrounds in the Sierra Nevada. Top picks for RV camping in Dorrington include North Grove and Oak Hollow at Calaveras Big Trees State Park (RVs up to 30 feet, dry camping with a dump station and showers), Golden Pines RV Resort in nearby Camp Connell (full hookups at 5,000 feet elevation), Wakaluu Hep Yo Campground on the North Fork Stanislaus River (first-come, first-served, $20/night), Sand Flat and Big Meadow on Forest Road 5N56 (dispersed forest sites), and Lake Alpine Campground for high-country views. Pro tip: reserve North Grove on ReserveCalifornia exactly six months ahead at 8 a.m. Pacific. Summer weekend sites disappear within minutes.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=28069When is the best time of year for an RV trip to Dorrington?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Dorrington. Summer daytime highs typically range from the upper 70s to mid 80s F, with nights cooling to the 50s, perfect sleeping weather at 4,800 feet. September brings warm days and far fewer crowds, while October paints the dogwoods red. Calaveras Big Trees' upper campground (Oak Hollow) operates seasonally from late spring through early fall, and Ebbetts Pass on Highway 4 typically opens by Memorial Day and closes with the first major snowstorm (often late November or December). Pro tip: shoulder seasons mean cheaper RV rental rates in Dorrington and easier campground reservations, a win-win.
weather.gov/sto/Can I rent an RV in Dorrington in winter?
Yes, and a snowy Sierra getaway is genuinely magical. Many Dorrington-area hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, propane furnaces, and 30-amp shore power, ideal for Bear Valley Mountain Resort ski trips or snow play at Calaveras Big Trees State Park, which stays open year-round. Filter for winter availability on RVezy and message the host about chain requirements, since Caltrans regularly posts R1 and R2 restrictions on Highway 4 above Arnold. Be aware that the high-country section of Highway 4 above Lake Alpine closes from roughly late November to May. Pro tip: ask your host to pre-fill fresh water and dump tanks before pickup so you can park, plug in, and start enjoying the snow.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/road-information/chain-controlsI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Dorrington?
You'll be just fine, especially with the support built into every booking. First time renting an RV in Dorrington? Your host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and the dump process, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included if anything comes up. Highway 4 from Angels Camp to Arnold is easy two-lane driving, and Dorrington itself sits right on the highway with plenty of pullouts. Stick to Class C motorhomes or smaller travel trailers under 25 feet for the easiest learning curve. Pro tip: avoid the steep, narrow stretch of Highway 4 above Lake Alpine in any RV. Big rigs simply don't fit past Mosquito Lake.
scenic4.org/the-route/the-driving-experience/What happens if my RV breaks down during my Dorrington trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Dorrington, CA, booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. From a single phone call, help can be dispatched along Highway 4, into Stanislaus National Forest service roads, or down in the Murphys/Angels Camp area. RVezy customer support is also reachable before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: cell service drops out east of Camp Connell and disappears above Lake Alpine, so screenshot the roadside assistance number and your host's contact info before you leave Arnold, the last reliable coverage zone on Highway 4.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Dorrington RV rental across state lines or to Mexico?
Interstate road trips are absolutely on the table. Many hosts welcome travel to Nevada, Oregon, and Arizona, popular RV road trips from Dorrington include Highway 4 to Lake Tahoe (about 2.5 hours), south to Yosemite and Mammoth Lakes, or north through Gold Country to Reno. Just confirm out-of-state travel with your host through the listing message before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a classic Sierra loop from Dorrington heads east over Ebbetts Pass (summer only) to Markleeville, north on Highway 89 to South Lake Tahoe, then back via Carson Pass, hitting three mountain passes in one unforgettable week.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Dorrington RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to plan. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A or large travel trailers come in around 6 to 9 mpg. California gas prices in the Sierra foothills typically run $4.50 to $5.25 per gallon, with the cheapest fill-ups in Angels Camp and Murphys before you climb Highway 4. A weekend round trip from the Bay Area to Dorrington and back (about 320 miles) costs roughly $130 to $200 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: top off in Arnold, the last reliable gas station on Highway 4 before the high country.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Dorrington?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the prettiest sites. Calaveras Big Trees State Park opens reservations exactly six months ahead through ReserveCalifornia.com at 8 a.m. Pacific, and summer Friday and Saturday nights at North Grove and Oak Hollow are usually gone within minutes. For Stanislaus National Forest sites like Sand Flat, Big Meadow, and Boards Crossing, book on Recreation.gov six months out. Wakaluu Hep Yo is first-come, first-served. Pro tip: if you strike out on a weekend, target a Sunday-through-Thursday Dorrington RV trip, you'll often find walk-up availability at North Grove and unbeatable quiet under the giant sequoias.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like on Highway 4 around Dorrington?
Highway 4 through Dorrington is paved, two lanes, and well-maintained, making the drive up from Angels Camp pleasant for any RV up to about 30 feet. Above Lake Alpine, however, Caltrans does not recommend the road for large RVs or trailers, expect single-lane sections, blind hairpins, and grades over 20%. Winter brings chain controls (R1 to R3) on Highway 4 above Arnold, and the high-country section closes seasonally, typically late November through May. Always check quickmap.dot.ca.gov before you leave. Pro tip: drive the Dorrington stretch in early morning or late afternoon to dodge tourist traffic heading into Calaveras Big Trees State Park, and watch for deer at dusk near Camp Connell.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Dorrington?
Expect a good mix of options. Calaveras Big Trees State Park offers dry camping (no hookups) with potable water spigots, bear lockers, flush toilets, hot coin-operated showers, and a seasonal dump station at North Grove. Golden Pines RV Resort in Camp Connell has full hookups including 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi. Stanislaus National Forest sites like Sand Flat are primitive with vault toilets and no water. The closest dump and freshwater fill outside the state park is at Golden Pines and at Big Trees Market in Arnold. Pro tip: arrive with full fresh water and empty waste tanks. Mountain campgrounds make filling and dumping less convenient than valley parks, so a little prep saves time on day one.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=28069What's inside the RVs available for rent in Dorrington?
You'll feel right at home. Most motorhome rentals in Dorrington come fully equipped: queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen with three-burner stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Class C motorhomes usually sleep 4 to 7, travel trailers sleep 4 to 8, and family-friendly toy haulers are great for hauling bikes up Highway 4. Many listings include a generator, outdoor TV, awning, and Wi-Fi hotspot. Pro tip: cell coverage thins out east of Arnold, so if you need to work remotely from your Dorrington RV trip, filter for listings with Starlink or a hotspot, both increasingly common with local hosts.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dorrington,CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect from Dorrington hosts?
Hosts make it easy to customize your campervan rental in Dorrington. Common add-ons include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($25 to $50), generators ($25 to $50/night), portable BBQs, fishing gear, and bike racks, all listed clearly on each listing page. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Arnold, Murphys, or Angels Camp, and most offer delivery to nearby campgrounds and cabins in Dorrington and Camp Connell for a flat fee. Mileage policies usually include 100 to 150 free miles per night. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator into one add-on package, you'll skip the towing learning curve and have power for your slow cooker by the sequoias.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dorrington,CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Dorrington?
The process is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Dorrington, CA, you pay through RVezy, never directly to the host, using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup; the exact amount is shown on the listing and during checkout. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition with the same fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after your trip, usually within a few days. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff with your host, it's the easiest way to keep your full deposit and finish your Calaveras Big Trees adventure stress-free.
