Campgrounds near Fairfax, California

Fairfax sits in central Marin County, west of San Rafael along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, with quick access to redwood forests, the Point Reyes peninsula, and the Pacific coast. The town itself has no RV campground inside its limits, so RV travelers typically base out of full-hookup parks closer to Highway 101 or along the route west toward Point Reyes National Seashore. Marin RV Park and Marin Park serve travelers staying near the freeway corridor in Greenbrae and San Rafael, with Golden Gate Trailer Park offering another close-in option. Novato RV Park sits a short drive north along the 101, useful for trips that combine Marin with Sonoma and Napa wine country. West of Fairfax, Olema Campground sits next to Point Reyes National Seashore and is the most common RV base for exploring the seashore, Tomales Bay, and the redwoods of Samuel P. Taylor State Park.

Things to do near Fairfax

Fairfax is widely recognized as a birthplace of mountain biking, and the trail network across Mount Tamalpais and the Marin Municipal Water District lands draws riders, hikers, and trail runners year-round. Day trips from a Fairfax base typically include redwood hikes along Lagunitas Creek in Samuel P. Taylor State Park, the Cross Marin Trail for easy family cycling, and Barnabe Peak for panoramic Marin County views. West of town, Point Reyes National Seashore offers Limantour Beach, the Point Reyes Lighthouse, tule elk viewing at Tomales Point, and oyster farms along Tomales Bay. Closer in, China Camp State Park provides shoreline trails and historic village exhibits along San Pablo Bay, and Mount Tamalpais State Park covers waterfalls, ridge hikes, and ocean overlooks.

The Marin coast has a Mediterranean climate with a sharp wet-and-dry split, which shapes camping conditions far more than temperature does. Summer days are warm and almost rain-free inland around Fairfax, while the coast at Point Reyes and Stinson Beach stays cool and often fog-shrouded into the afternoon. RV travelers should pack layers even in July and August. Late spring and early fall bring the most reliable sun across both inland valleys and the coast, and these shoulder seasons usually offer better site availability than peak summer weekends. Winter brings the bulk of the year's rain from November through March, with muddy trails and occasional road closures on the coastal routes. Some state-park sites and seasonal coastal areas run on reduced operations in winter. Lagunitas Creek is closed to public access from December through mid-June to protect spawning coho salmon and steelhead, a key consideration for families planning water play in Samuel P. Taylor State Park.

Angel 😇 Life Saver ⛑️ Great Communication 📲📞 Informative 📚 PUNCTUAL ⏳️ Just a few words to describe this wonderful Host. When my prior host backed out and canceled on me the day of (There was no communication up til 48hrs before trip, and stopped again the morning of. I reached out for clarification and location, no response! Moments later Rveezy tells me the host is no longer comfortable with accommodating us) Evgeniy not only responed within 5min of me reachout out, but had us out and on the road to enjoy out trip within an hour. The vehicle is perfect, clean and easy to function. We had never driven or worked an RV before but his quick rundown and eargeness to answer any questions helped put out minds at ease. He is so kind, professonal, and absolutely Amazing 🤩. We will definitely rent from him again despite our extra charges for not having time to thoroughly clean out and fill up; but that was a very small price to pay for what we would have missed if he hadn't come to help us out of a pickle. They only gave the options of 5 stars so I'll leave the rest here : ✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️

How to book Fairfax campgrounds

Private RV parks in the Fairfax area, including Marin RV Park, Marin Park, Golden Gate Trailer Park, Novato RV Park, and Olema Campground, take reservations directly through each operator's website or phone line, and Olema in particular fills quickly for summer weekends and holidays. State park campgrounds in Marin, including Samuel P. Taylor State Park and Mount Tamalpais State Park, book through ReserveCalifornia on a six-month rolling window that opens daily at 8 a.m. Pacific, with popular sites going within minutes of release. Point Reyes National Seashore offers only hike-in and boat-in backcountry sites and books through Recreation.gov on three-month and 14-day windows, with no car or RV camping inside the seashore. For peak season, set reminders for the booking-window opening date.

What to expect near Fairfax

RV parks along the 101 corridor offer full hookups, paved or gravel pads, and easy access to grocery stores and dump stations. Olema Campground, the closest full-service base to Point Reyes, has full hookup loops along with tent areas, free hot showers, a laundromat, a playground, and a dog run, with restaurants and a grocery a short distance away in Point Reyes Station. State park sites near Fairfax tend to be smaller, shaded, and limited in RV length, with no hookups and shared restrooms. Cellular coverage drops quickly west of Fairfax, so download offline maps before heading toward the coast.
