Camping near Felton, California
Felton sits in the Santa Cruz Mountains along the San Lorenzo River, surrounded by coast redwood forest and roughly six miles inland from the city of Santa Cruz. The town is the closest base for visiting Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, home to a 40-acre old-growth grove and the Redwood Grove Loop Trail. Camping options near Felton fall into two categories: private full-hookup RV parks along Highway 9, and the state park's wooded campground off Graham Hill Road.
Private options include Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, Smithwoods RV Park, Cotillion Gardens RV Park, and Santa Cruz Ranch RV Resort. These properties cater to travel trailers and motorhomes with full hookups, on-site laundry, and river or forest settings. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground offers a more rustic experience with picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, and coin-operated showers. Roaring Camp Railroad, the San Lorenzo River, and Santa Cruz beaches are all within a short drive, making Felton a practical hub for families combining redwoods, river, and coast.
Things to do near Felton
Hiking is the headline activity. Henry Cowell offers about 20 miles of trails, from easy walks to climbs such as the route to the Observation Deck at 805 feet, which on clear days looks out toward Monterey Bay. The Redwood Grove Loop Trail is a self-guided walk through ancient redwoods, with the tallest tree in the grove standing about 277 feet tall and over 1,500 years old. The San Lorenzo River runs through town and the state park, with summer swimming holes including the Garden of Eden. Roaring Camp Railroad runs steam-train excursions, including a route down to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and fishing are also available within the park. Santa Cruz beaches, the Mystery Spot, and downtown shops and groceries are a short drive south on Highway 9 or via Graham Hill Road.

The Santa Cruz Mountains have a Mediterranean climate with wet winters and dry summers. Summer, from June through August, is the dominant camping season: days are warm but rarely hot under the redwood canopy, mornings can be foggy, and rainfall is minimal. This is also when sites fill fastest, and reservations are strongly recommended between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Spring brings wildflowers, flowing creeks, and cooler nights; it is a good shoulder window for travelers who want the trails without peak crowds. Fall is similarly mild, with warm afternoons lingering into October and the first significant rains typically arriving in November. Winter is the wet season, with heavy rain events that can cause road damage and trail closures in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Following the closure of nearby Big Basin Redwoods after the 2020 wildfire, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground has operated year-round. Private RV resorts in Felton generally stay open year-round as well.

We had a wonderful trip with our family in Farzan’s RV! The kids absolutely loved the experience and had a blast. Farzan was fantastic to work with—he was extremely informative during the walkthrough and super accommodating when we needed a slightly delayed drop-off. The RV was great and everything ran smoothly. We’d definitely rent from him again!

How to book a campground near Felton
Reservation systems differ by property. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground is booked through ReserveCalifornia, online or by calling 800-444-7275. Inventory opens on a rolling window six months in advance of the arrival date, with new dates released daily at 8 a.m. Pacific. Prime summer weekends are typically claimed within minutes of opening. Maximum trailer length is 31 feet; maximum camper or motorhome length is 35 feet.
Private parks use their own systems. Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort takes reservations through Campspot, with bookings available up to one year in advance. Holiday weekends often carry multi-night minimums. Smithwoods RV Park, Cotillion Gardens RV Park, and Santa Cruz Ranch RV Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone.
What to expect at Felton campgrounds
Sites sit beneath tall conifers, so shade is plentiful and cell service is spotty. Private resorts offer Wi-Fi that is often not reliable enough for remote work. Private parks along Highway 9 provide full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service, on-site laundry, dump stations, and access to the San Lorenzo River. Sites tend to be close together, especially at the larger resorts.
At Henry Cowell, campsites accommodate up to 8 people and include picnic tables, fire rings, bear-proof food lockers, and coin-operated hot showers; bring quarters. There are no electric or water hookups at individual sites. Generators are permitted only between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Wildlife sightings can include deer, turkeys, raccoons, and the occasional bobcat or coyote. Highway 9 north from Santa Cruz is narrow and winding; many RV travelers prefer to arrive via Highway 17 and Mount Hermon Road.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Felton, CA
How much does an RV rental in Felton cost, and how can I save?
RV rentals in Felton are surprisingly affordable for such a stunning redwood destination. On RVezy, you'll generally find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, campervans from $125 to $225, and larger Class C motorhomes between $175 and $325. To score a cheap RV rental in Felton, aim for midweek bookings (Sunday through Thursday) or shoulder months like late September through early November, when redwood weather is still gorgeous but summer crowds have thinned. Many hosts also drop nightly rates for stays of five nights or longer. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and message hosts directly to ask about weekly discounts, since Felton's location near Santa Cruz means rigs book up fast for summer weekends.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Felton%2C%20CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Felton, California?
Good news: for almost every RV rental in Felton, a regular Class C driver's license is all you need. California only requires a non-commercial Class B license for motorhomes longer than 40 feet, which is far larger than what most renters book. Campervans, travel trailers, and standard Class C motorhomes on RVezy fit comfortably under that limit. RVezy approved renters are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and your ID is verified right in the app. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. Most first-time renters tell us the process feels easier than picking up a U-Haul.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Felton RV rental?
Every RV rental in Felton booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the Santa Cruz Mountains with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), so you can pick the coverage that feels right for your family. The plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip up to the limits of the plan you select. Roadside help is just a phone call away whether you are parked under the redwoods at Henry Cowell or driving Highway 9 back from the coast. Pro tip: review your protection plan summary in the booking flow so you know exactly what is covered before you hit the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Felton RV trip?
Life happens, and RVezy has you covered. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every booking, so you won't see different policies on different listings. There is a grace-period window right after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, the refund amount depends on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Felton RV rentals for peak summer weekends, knowing you have that initial cancellation window if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Felton RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Felton is one of the most popular searches on RVezy. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see dozens of hosts who welcome furry co-pilots, sometimes for a small cleaning fee. Felton is genuinely dog-friendly: leashed dogs are allowed at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park on the Meadow Trail, Pipeline Road, Graham Hill Trail, and Powder Mill Fire Road, plus most of the private RV parks in town like Cotillion Gardens and Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort accept pets. Pro tip: dogs aren't allowed on the famous old-growth Redwood Grove Loop Trail, so plan a pup-friendly hike on Meadow Trail instead and save the grove for a quick solo walk.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=546Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Felton?
Yes, RV delivery in Felton is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are new to RVs. Many local hosts will drop the rig directly at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, Cotillion Gardens RV Park, Smithwoods RV Park, or Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just look for the Delivery filter on RVezy and message the host with your campground name and site number. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $5 per mile, and some hosts offer free delivery within Felton or Scotts Valley. Pro tip: ask the host to set up with the awning out and chairs ready so you arrive to a campsite that feels move-in ready under the redwoods.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=546How far can I drive on a Felton RV trip, and are there mileage limits?
Most Felton hosts offer somewhere between 100 and 250 free miles per night, and a handful list RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is great if you're planning a long loop. From Felton you can reach Big Sur in about 1 hour 45 minutes (75 miles), Yosemite National Park in 4 hours (190 miles), San Francisco in 90 minutes (75 miles), Pinnacles National Park in 90 minutes (70 miles), and Lake Tahoe in roughly 4.5 hours (240 miles). Extra miles usually run $0.30 to $0.50 each. Pro tip: before you book, message the host with your rough route, they'll often bump up your mileage allowance or suggest a flat-rate package for a Felton RV trip up the coast.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/route-informationWhere should I stay when I rent an RV in Felton?
Felton has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to RV camping in Felton. The best campgrounds near Felton include Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground (107 sites tucked among pine and oak, $35/night, books on ReserveCalifornia), Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort on Highway 9 (84 full-hookup sites along the San Lorenzo River), Cotillion Gardens RV Park (direct trail access into Henry Cowell), and Smithwoods RV Park (full hookups beneath towering redwoods). For overnight parking in Felton itself, stick to designated campgrounds, since street and lot RV camping is restricted throughout Santa Cruz County. Pro tip: book Henry Cowell six months out on ReserveCalifornia for summer weekends, those redwood sites disappear fast.
reservecalifornia.com/CaliforniaWebHome/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Felton?
Felton's redwood microclimate makes it a year-round destination, but late May through early October is the sweet spot for an RV road trip from Felton. Summer highs hover between 71°F and 75°F, mornings start crisp in the high 40s, and the San Lorenzo River warms up enough for swimming. June through September stay almost entirely dry. Winters are mild (highs around 57°F to 60°F) but bring most of Felton's 49 inches of annual rainfall, so book a rig with great heating if you visit December through February. Pro tip: late September and early October deliver the same warm, dry weather as summer but with lower rates and quieter campgrounds at Henry Cowell.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never rented an RV before. How will I know how everything works?
You're going to do great, first time renting an RV in Felton is easier than you think. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the propane, water system, slide-outs, generator, and dump procedure. Most owners also leave a printed cheat sheet inside the rig and stay reachable by text through the RVezy app the entire trip. You can message the host before booking to ask anything, from how the awning works to whether a Class C will fit at Henry Cowell's 35-foot site limit. Pro tip: choose a smaller Class C or campervan for your first Felton trip, the curvy stretch of Highway 9 between Santa Cruz and Felton feels much friendlier in a shorter rig.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Take a deep breath, you are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Graham Hill Road, run out of propane near Boulder Creek, or have a mechanical hiccup pulling into Cotillion Gardens, one phone call gets help dispatched. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip through the app. Your host is usually your fastest first call for quirky questions (like which switch runs the water pump), and Felton-area hosts know the Santa Cruz Mountains well. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before leaving Felton, cell service can be spotty deeper in the redwoods.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Felton RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes to most road trip dreams, with one important note. From Felton you can drive your RV rental anywhere in California and across most U.S. state lines, with many hosts happy to approve trips into Oregon, Nevada, or Arizona, just message them before booking to confirm. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance, so always get written approval in the RVezy chat first. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend across that border. Popular routes from Felton include Highway 1 north to San Francisco, Highway 101 south to Big Sur, and Interstate 5 east to Yosemite. Pro tip: a Felton-to-Crater-Lake loop through the Redwoods is a bucket-list run for redwood lovers.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for an RV rental in Santa Cruz County is easier than most people expect because Felton is so close to everything. Campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches and large travel trailer combos run 6 to 9 mpg. California gas runs higher than the national average (recent prices around $4.70 to $5.20 per gallon for regular), and the closest stations to Felton are along Highway 9 in town and in Scotts Valley. For a typical weekend loop (Felton to Big Sur and back, about 175 miles), expect $90 to $140 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Scotts Valley before heading into the mountains, prices there are usually 20 to 30 cents cheaper than coastal stations.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Felton?
Reserve early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park books through ReserveCalifornia.com (or 1-800-444-7275) and opens reservations six months in advance to the day, which is exactly when summer weekend sites get snapped up. Private parks like Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, Cotillion Gardens, and Smithwoods book directly on their websites and typically fill 2 to 4 months ahead for June through August. Shoulder season (April, May, October) is much more forgiving, often just a week or two out. Pro tip: if Henry Cowell is full, set a free cancellation alert on ReserveCalifornia, summer cancellations pop up daily, and Cotillion Gardens has the best trail access into the park anyway.
reservecalifornia.com/CaliforniaWebHome/What are the driving conditions like in and around Felton?
Felton driving is scenic and very manageable in any RV up to about 30 feet. The main route in, Highway 9 between Santa Cruz and Felton, is a winding two-lane mountain road with redwood-shaded curves that demand a slower pace (35 to 45 mph in most sections) but reward you with one of the prettiest drives in California. Graham Hill Road into Henry Cowell is wider and friendlier for larger rigs. Watch for low-hanging branches at older campgrounds, narrow access roads at Smithwoods, and occasional winter storm closures on Highway 17 over the summit. Pro tip: avoid driving Highway 17 between San Jose and Santa Cruz on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, traffic crawls and the grade can be tough on big rigs.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/route-informationWhat amenities can I expect at Felton-area campgrounds?
Felton-area campgrounds run the full range from full-hookup luxury to redwood-rustic. Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, Cotillion Gardens, and Smithwoods all offer full hookups (electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi hotspots, hot showers, and laundry. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground keeps it simpler: 107 sites with flush toilets, coin-op hot showers, potable water spigots, picnic tables, fire rings, and food lockers, but no hookups and no dump station inside the park. The nearest dump station and water fill is at New Brighton State Beach in Capitola, about 20 minutes south. Pro tip: bring a 6-foot sewer hose extension and a small set of leveling blocks, several Felton sites sit on slightly sloped terrain and have offset utility connections.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=29725What's typically included inside a Felton RV rental?
Most RV rentals in Felton come ready to camp the moment you turn the key. Expect a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, pots, pans, plates, utensils), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig, climate control with furnace and A/C, and seatbelts for everyone riding while driving. Many hosts include linens, towels, outdoor chairs, a propane grill, and a generator or solar setup. Larger Class C motorhomes often have a TV and Wi-Fi hotspot (cell signal can dip under the redwoods, fair warning). Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host about extras like a kids' bedding kit, a paddleboard, or a Roaring Camp Railroad discount, many Felton hosts toss in local perks.
parks.ca.gov/henrycowell/What add-ons and pickup options should I look for when renting?
Felton hosts offer some genuinely useful add-ons that make a motorhome rental in Felton feel effortless. Common picks include delivery and setup ($2 to $5 per mile), generator hours ($3 to $5 per hour beyond the included allotment), propane refills, bike racks, pet packages, kitchen kits, and bedding packages ($25 to $75). Pickup is typically at the host's home in Felton, Scotts Valley, or Ben Lomond, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation walkthrough. Most hosts offer 100 to 250 miles per day included, with overage at $0.30 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a stocked kitchen kit for your first night at Henry Cowell, you'll skip the Highway 9 grocery run and have more time to walk the Redwood Grove Loop before sunset.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=546How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your campervan rental in Felton is handled entirely through the secure RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or a card to the host. You pay with credit or debit card at booking, and the host is paid out after your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV and the protection plan you choose) and released back to your card within a few days of a clean, on-time return. To avoid deposit issues, do a quick photo walkaround at pickup and drop-off, return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: most Felton hosts include a simple checkout checklist, follow it and your deposit comes back fast.
