Campgrounds and RV parks near Firebaugh, CA

The area mixes valley agriculture with public-land recreation. Firebaugh hosts an annual Cantaloupe Round-Up Festival celebrating the peak melon harvest in late July. West of town, Panoche Hills offers upland game bird, small game, and big game hunting for deer and wild pigs, along with hiking and wildlife viewing on undeveloped BLM terrain. The area is also a recognized dark-sky destination for stargazing. At Los Banos Creek Reservoir, visitors fish for largemouth bass and catfish, paddle flat-water kayaks and canoes, and hike the shoreline when the park is open. Mercey Hot Springs, off Little Panoche Road, draws travelers for soaking pools. Families looking for an indoor break can tour the historic aircraft at the Castle Air Museum next to the RV park in Atwater.

Firebaugh has a semi-arid Central Valley climate with hot, dry summers and mild, damp winters. Summer highs often top 100 degrees Fahrenheit, while winters are cooler and mild, typically between 40 and 60 degrees. Shade is limited at most local sites, so summer RV travelers should plan for strong sun, run air conditioning, and consider arriving in late afternoon to set up in cooler hours. Seasonal access to public lands is the most important factor in trip planning. The BLM Central Coast Field Office closes Panoche and Tumey Hills in Fresno County on April 15 to vehicle access seasonally for public safety and to reduce wildfire risk, with opening dates determined annually based on conditions. In practice, vehicle-based camping at Panoche Hills runs roughly mid-October through mid-April. Los Banos Creek Reservoir is closed to the public from September 6 through June 22 for a multi-agency project that includes a new bridge over the dam spillway and an extended boat launch. Confirm closures with the managing agency before booking. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for tent-friendly weather and active hiking.

Expect a working agricultural landscape rather than a scenic park setting. Private parks near town, including Arena RV Park and The Lakes RV and Golf Resort, are flat, paved, and built for easy in-and-out access from the highway. Castle Air Museum RV Park offers full hookups with water, sewer, electric, and Wi-Fi. Public-land options are far more primitive. Los Banos Creek Reservoir has a small number of undeveloped shoreline sites with chemical toilets and no hookups; bring leveling blocks for uneven ground. Panoche Hills has no amenities and no water, with vehicle camping only from mid-October to mid-April. Cell coverage is reliable near I-5 and town but drops off quickly in the hills. Summer heat, farm dust, and limited shade are the main comfort factors to plan for.
