Campgrounds and RV parks near Forest Meadows, CA

Calaveras Big Trees State Park preserves two groves of giant sequoias in its North and South Groves, alongside the Stanislaus River, Beaver Creek, ancient volcanic formations, and natural meadows. Short loop walks suit families, and longer trails follow the river and creek. Downtown Murphys, minutes from Forest Meadows, has tasting rooms, restaurants, and a creekside community park. Day trips reach Columbia State Historic Park, a preserved Gold Rush town with stagecoach rides, Mercer Caverns, Moaning Cavern, and Railtown 1897 in Jamestown. Glory Hole Recreation Area at New Melones Lake offers low-traffic roads and single-track for biking, plus boating and swimming.

The Forest Meadows area follows a Mediterranean foothill pattern: wet, cool winters and hot, dry summers. Summer is the peak RV season. Days are warm to hot, nights are comfortable, and wildfire smoke can drift in during late summer. Sites at popular state parks fill weeks ahead, particularly weekends and holidays. Spring brings wildflowers, runoff in creeks, and shoulder-season availability, though higher elevations can still see late snow. All of Oak Hollow is open May 15th through October 1st. Fall is dry and mild with thinner crowds and good color in the dogwoods inside the sequoia groves. Winter changes the calculus. Highway 4 east of Arnold can require chains, and snow falls at the higher elevations of the park. North Grove has limited sites available on a first-come, first-serve basis from November through May, while Oak Hollow is closed. Private parks in Columbia, Angels Camp, and Murphys generally operate year-round and become the practical choice once snow arrives.

Roads into the area follow Highway 4 and Highway 49, both two-lane mountain routes with grades and curves. All RVs and vehicles with trailers heading to Calaveras Big Trees must take Rock Creek Road, even if GPS says to use Mosquito Road, because these vehicles cannot cross the single-lane Mosquito Bridge. RVs up to 30 feet are welcome at Oak Hollow, but this is a dry camping facility with no hookups, and an RV dump station is available elsewhere in the park. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and bear-proof food locker. Bears are active, so use the lockers. Cell service is spotty in the canyon. Private parks in Columbia and Murphys generally offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and showers, with easier rig access.
